So I used lyric from the Lyric Mart recently and wondered if it's considered a collaboration, found object experiment or mash-up. I told my lyric donor I was going to use them, but then didn't know if I should use a band name that reflected this fact or not. I decided to include said donor in the artist name, but wondered about best practices and others' thoughts on the subject. After all, they may not appreciate the association.

QOTD: if you were to use the lyric mart, how would you credit the lyricist?

The couple of times I did that I did not credit the lyricist in my band name, I just entered as Lunkhead. I tried to prominently credit the lyricist on the boards though. That seemed to be where it was important to credit the other person at the time. In retrospect, I guess people who go listen to those old songs now won't have that context. Fortunately there are probably zero such listeners, so I don't think I'm going to lose sleep over it. :P

"Thanks!" again to the writers of the lyrics I used for "Soft Orange Glow" (Abecedarian I think? or maybe he just used them also?), "Less of You" (damn, really can't remember at this point), "Spalding Gray Is Missing" (Niveous), and "Here Comes My Dragon" (drawing a blank again, sorry). Ok, now that I even can't remember who the writers were I feel a little worse about not recording their names in the band names...

This makes me wish again for the option to provide additional credits for an entry as a separate piece of data (outside the band name). ;)

I totally did not expect a name credit in the submission, but thanks! It's nice to be appreciated.

I'm verbose, so it's rare that I can't come with lyrics, but I usually do about the same thing as Lunkhead: submit as myself, but clearly credit in the boards and the .MP3 tags. I've had some great FAWM creations like that, to wit.

That was mine. Good work on the song, too, way better than what I would have done with it.
I'd say you could put it in the notes of the mp3 id3 tags, perhaps. Composer? Comments?

I always use mp3 tags. But in this case, especially, I didn't have a song until I had the lyric, so I felt compelled to credit its very existence.

Also MP3 tags have a tendency to get modified when people decide to keep a song for their library. When I download a fight I actually have a script that removes all the tags and re-tags with the information from the site (including album art), because otherwise I just have a big misorganized mess. I think iTunes automatically does that when people use the podcast, too.

So you're saying that you're deleting information from my files, right? That means you're destroying the artistic vision!

Yes, and the other artistic vision from peoples' crappy nonconforming ID3 tags that make my iPod go into a continuous reboot loop.

Get this. He also normalizes your audio content. NOW you can get indignant.

No matter how many times you say it, it's still completely untrue.
