April 6, 2012 - RIP Jim Marshall

Post by roymond »

I never liked Marshall amps, but he powered some amazing folks' sound.

QOTD: biggest wall of speakers you've been in front of?

For me, my first real rock concert...Yes at Colt Park, CT. 1976.

I suspect front row, Motley Crue, LA Forum.

I should probably add that during Mick Marr's guitar solo he shot a laser from the headstock of his guitar and "blew up" one of his Marshall 4x12 cabinets.

For me, it would be Kiss. But the closest I've been to a wall of speakers was BLT live. I'll dig up old pics one of these days. Most of the regular shows we traveled light. But for the big ones, we were showy, lol. I had two 6X10 Sunn cabs and two 4X12 Carvin cabs. My bass player had an 18" bottoms and 15" bottom with two 4X10 Carvin cabs on top of each. My drummer had a double kick set with more drums and cymbals than you can shake a drum stick at. My lead guitar player had two 4X12 Marshalls I sold him when I switched to Carvin. Of all the cabs I've played through, I miss the Sunn 6X10s.

Fun fact: 6X10 Sunn cabs were originally made for bass. They're a ported cab. They were just ok for bass, but turns out great for guitar. If you ever see and old live pic of Hendrix, he has a wall of them. Even after Marshall indorsed him, he still had Sunn cabs off to the side of his Marshall stacks.

^ lmao! That's awesome. Is that Spinal Tap?

edit: Looked it up. The band is called Immortals and they are not a satirical band. :o

That picture is great. I've thought that for a long time that walls of cabs were empty and for show, with either a single one running or an isolation cab mic'd. But I do believe that way back when, Hendrix's time let's say, walls were legit as there weren't good PA sytems and the like. Imagine a 100 watt Marshall cab, before there were master volumes on them as well, cranked to get a good overdriven sound. This is what acts like Cream and the like did. Ouch.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

I was watching a vid of the new way live concerts are recorded for albums etc. And you're right about isolation cabs. They have one or two special isolated cabs per instrument free of all other sounds to get a clean recording and feed the PA, then mix in the audience later on the final mix for the album. They even use mic placement in the audience to minimize the music in the audience recording. Drummers don't like the plexiglass screens in hard rock/metal, etc. So they can now mic the drums with mics that only pick up the sound of the one drum/cymbal it's on with very little other sounds. It's amazing how clean live concerts have become.

So with that said, I see the reason for the fake cabs for show. They should have gone the extra mile and made them the right dimensions and closed up the backs. ;)

By the way, I've mentioned Palladia channel before. I love it. All live concerts recorded using the new clean methods and in 1080p resolution. They do have segments of the oldies that are badly recorded, but still well remembered. They make it clear that it's oldies hour though.

You should!!! Even get creative and put cool colored LED lights in them behind the mesh for the end of the show. Maybe even lights that flash out....
O C T O T H O R P E :P

You'll need at least 10 in a row, of course.

This reminds me of when Geddy Lee decided to go direct during live shows and filled the stage space with washing machines and chicken rotisseries.

is that why he did that? I had no idea. I have a complete new respect.
...Albz, is there anything you don't know? If I ever win the megamillions and force people to like my music like the crap on the radio these days, will you be my fact checker. I'll pay whatever you ask, as long as it's 25% or less than what I budget for fact checking. :D
