I am posting this here because I can't find any other good place to post it. I didn't want to make a whole thread about it because it's not big deal, but on the other hand, I don't think I've ever started one of these Daily Roll Call threads before, pretty much being distasteful of the concept, and yet...

Today I saw this tweet:
New songs from the #SpinTunes & @songfight community: spintown.bandcamp.com/album/songwrit… #TheyAreFREE

As if using the Song Fight! board as an advertising venue for his competitions wasn't good enough, now Spin is using our twitter handle to spread the word.
There is no "SpinTunes & Songfight community". There is nothing about Songfight at that link. Hey, I know many of you don't agree with me about all this, and it's not like I'm King or anything, but Good Grief!

OK, I'm done. Carry on...

Actually, I do agree with you and the people in my online music circle know how I feel about it. I don't even like that my absolute favorite music rag is often confused with spintunes. I read SPIN magazine online almost daily as I'm a subscriber because they are AWESOME! Then when I mention an article there, they think I'm talking about spin "tunes". Then I have to get all pissy and say something snarky, like, "yeah, because Dave Grohl sat down with spintunes for an in depth interview about his new gig as the permanent Queens of the Stoneage drummer" Image

I really dislike when people use other people's site traffic, that they've worked years to build, to promote and recruit for their site without even the courtesy of asking. I get that there is no law against it, but there is a moral aspect to it and it's skanky. Then say something like, "oh, just tell me if it belongs to you and I'll take it down" No, how about ASK if you can use it first. Or they say, "well, everyone else is doing it". No, not everyone is doing it. And that doesn't make you less of a skank.

Here's the bottom line. If you are using someone's site traffic, ideas, etc for profit, ask the owner if you can use it. 9 times out of 10 they will not have a problem with it if you let them have a banner/link directing back to them. Networking is king. If it's just a fun online thing without profit involved, like copy/pasta a meme pic, vid, etc, no problem. Generally those things are public for all to use as they like.

To me it's like Burger King standing inside a McDonald's passing out coupons to go to Burger King for free fries with every order. Skanky, I say! Skanky!

Anywho, I digress. Happy almost Thanksgiving, boys and girls. Image

I always figured that there being a huge overlap in community they are leveraging that to attract folks for whom it resonates. But I'm not that cued in to past performance, etc.

I think the reason that the tweet was phrased this way was because the songs were written by members of both communities. This "contest" itself did not originate with Spin because Spintunes is over now. This is "Song Cycle #3," the brainchild of Edric Haleen who, like me, came from the SongFu community.

There are Song Fighters involved in this particular album, which is hosted on the Spintunes bandcamp site; quite a few if you count people who have been involved through Gift of Music or Nur Ein. I can only assume that Edric asked Spin to host his album on the site. Anyway, all the participants, whether Song Fighters or not, have ALSO been involved in Spintunes OR SongFu as well, multiple times.

As some of you know, I came here from the SongFu/Spintunes community. I participated in the SongCycle thing once, but not this year.

**** oh... and there isn't a huge overlap. the "Spintunes community" itself isn't huge - the core group of us being only about 10-25ish nebulously defined people - I was an original member of the Spintunes community out of SongFu6 ... but I am far more active here in general. The live events kind of clinched it for me here although I did meet a few of the Spintunes folks on other occasions.

I was snarking about the title you chose for this topic.

For what it's worth, it's not as if anyone who subscribes to @songfight on Twitter will automatically see Spintown's posts just because he puts @songfight in it. The only people who are alerted to it are the ones who are either already following Spintown, or the owner(s) of the Song Fight twitter account. It does suck that he keeps on forming this false association (and I find it highly distasteful that whenever he reviews Song Fight fights, he does so by posting it as a link to his blog on the forum here with just enough of an excerpt to make people think that maybe he actually wrote decent reviews about everyone - which he never does, so far as I've seen), but it's not as if he's magically stealing bandwidth or eyeballs or whatever.

I am not much of a fan of spin* things, and I can understand how this could be taken the wrong way.

From the other perspective, I think anyone generating attention for SF is kind of a good thing. The fact that we have a groupie is a sign of potential.

I don't know if this helps at all, but I did 2 songs in one of Spin's competitions earlier this year, and when I reviewed the other competitors songs with what I thought was brutal honesty - I think I completely pissed all of them off.

I recall one response to my reviews read:
Yikes, caravan. Keep it at least a little positive. You don't want to distance yourself from all the other competitors by slamming their stuff....I mean I can take your abuse, but try to avoid using words like "annoying" "pointless" "camp" "pissweak" and "shame," maybe....

Heh!! Over there apparently, it IS "Song Love" - not SongFight

Yeah, well I recognized quite a few names, and figured it was enough to let the big qualifiers fly! You might not know that side of me but BEWARE. That said, I'll tone down because you know I'm a Song Fight! Federation loyalist and will gladly kill for you.

things are a particular way anywhere you go. i guess you decide if you like it or not and then you spend time accordingly where you feel that you Fit.
-to add to that, I didn't seek out any songwriting community so I could hear songs that did not deserve praise receiving any. I came to train because my engineering is lame and it needs help not coddling. Some people don't feel the same and look for other things in their communities, I suppose.

Yeah, well, see, I have no idea how twitter works. Nor do I, no matter how many times I have looked it up, understand the difference between putting an octothorpe vs. an 'at sign' in front of your handle...

I can see how this could perturb. There may be some overlap but the two communities are quite different as Caravan Ray attested to earlier. The phrasing is poor but I don't think Travis meant it as a coattail ride.

Yes. Though I have had an account for quite some time - I have never understood the point of Twitter, and likewise have no idea what all the "#" things mean.

However - I just got given an iPhone for my new job - and with that, I have just started looking at it again - and Twitter is sort of making a bit more sense to me now.

Still don't really understand how it works though

# is a hashtag, which is basically a search key. It has nothing to do with usernames. Basically it's a quick link to searching for an identifier about an issue, like if you say #fooblah that means that you are writing about 'fooblah' and are hoping that other people are too. Messages in a hashtag also get broadcast to people who are watching those hashtags (which you can do from third-party clients or by keeping a search page open).

@ is an address to someone else, i.e. "I'm speaking AT someone." They only get automatically broadcast to the person mentioned in it, and if the message is in reply to someone else, it won't even show up on other peoples' timelines unless those people are watching both the sender and the main receiver of the message (at least not by default, although this can be overridden by putting another character in front of the @; people usually use a . for this purpose).

So, to break down Spintown's tweet, he was talking ABOUT #SpinTunes (the topic) and @SongFight (the user), and sending a notification to the SongFight user.

Of course a lot of people don't understand how this works, which is why about 50% of the messages sent to me (@fluffy) are intended for Gabriel fucking Iglesias, and most of what's left are people talking about their pet hamsters or their best friend who also has the nickname 'fluffy' (but obviously not the username). Because nobody wants to learn how this shit works. And honestly it's pretty confusing from a non-technical perspective.

That's awesome! Well, maybe not to you, but he's one of my favorite comedians. What kind of messages do you get that are meant for him? Just curious.

Also, have you ever gotten a message meant for the fedora wearing Rone, lol. Image
