The tracks may be out of phase, too, which can thin the sound. Apologies if you know this stuff already, but here's a good overview of the mic technique you're using, with a discussion on how to eliminate phasing. (You can also do it after the fact by nudging the waveforms in software.)
Thanks man, that looks like an awesome article, I'll look through it now.

Yeah, I read it after I wrote mine, and didn't care enough to edit it. On another note, I believe Fightmasters usually delete submissions that are found to be false or illegal, for obvious reasons. Send JB a PM.

Brevity in reviews: it's a crutch for the weak.

Titans of Eklekto-Clash (jr. biffed the name) was me on the fast and dirty.

Max the Cat cold owned this. I nearly pooped my pants.

I ph33r Deshead. That boy has too god damn much talent and uses it far too consistantly.

TSI's track rocked my socks. I can't wait for teh dancefloor remix.

Stateshirt usually makes me think of the 80s, but this time made me think of like, Husker Du and SST bands. Except SS's track was more enjoyable.

Special Relatives made me think of the Anarchy Steering Comittee.

Understand how your child scored this grading period:
E = Excellent
G = Good
S = Satisfactory
N = Needs Improvement
U = Unacceptable

The Sober Irishman - Not my thing, sorry. I know you're pretty blessed in the music department. S

Robot Tarzan - I recognize that sample - is that Guitar Vader? Or is it just that so many Japanese girls have that voice? Anyway, another great avant track this week. I'm really enjoying your approach and the way things come back in and out. Still could use another hook somewhere to carry the length. G

Deshead - I still love your voice, man. Not a big fan of country pop but I can appreciate it, for sure. G

Luke Henley - I hated your other shit, but this is awesome. This is liek the track you subtly edit into a mixtape you give to someone you barely know. Just to gfreak em out, ya know? I'd liek to hear this after Trey Spruance produces you up in his cabin. The "fucking child" part is incredibly emotive and you need to focus on the method that produced that part of the song. E

Max the Cat - Not a fan of the cadence-less rap, or the repetitive background. But at the same time your radio voice is just SOOOO impressive. The idea is clever and the lyrics are great. Even with some detractors, this track is still very repeat-listenable. G

Titans of Eklekto-Clash - Incredible intro. Oooh, there's the vocals to ruin it. No offense but this really should have started with a distorted, reverbed verse at least before your the clear voice in the chorus. That melody of the pitch shift / falsetto outro is wack. S

Dopant - I won't repeat the comparisons, but the melody is definitely wack, yo! Lyrics sound so played out. I like the ROI/maximize part though. S

The Special Relatives - The week's most unfortunate stinker. No hook. Bad sound. Crap lyrics. Crap recording. Headache bass. U

The Marty Conlon Quartet - Mmmm, this is derivative, not integral. N

Trihs Etats - Although I liek this style more than last week's, I like this song much less. It's cool, no doubt. You've still got a nice double-time hihat in the chorus. I'm just not really liking the vocal delivery in some places, like the way the lyric "remind your failures (?)" and the rising "expelled's". G

Andre Was Here at Midnight - this makes me kind of sore. But it has a nice swing to it. Can't make out the lyrics but they sound like Modest Mouse. Back in the I-Hate-Radio days. N

Songfight Orchestra - A cool approach, that amazingly flows while incorporating the title's theme. The ending sounds a little too much like an ending, though. Whitesnake. S

Points for Trying - I think this actually one of the best-written songs this week. I really like the jump to the high note in the second measure of each verse line. Recording is kind of loose and demo-ey. Crappy guitar tones. G

Micro-reviews immediately before my monday morning production meeting...

Deshead...talented Canadian...I can hear Toronto in you... very good. Contender...except I 've already heard Sober's...and I'm pulled that way... still, great job.

Dopant...nice tune, singing a bit suspect, ok.

sober...you rule. I want to hear this live! CONTENDER.

Dre... not bad, but not something I'll listen to again...

Luke Henley... not doing it for me.

MartyColon Quartet... I like the riff... punky. Ok song, a bit of a droner though.

Max The Cat... you never disappoint me... as in I like how your musical mind spews stuff out. Quirky. Fish on the stereo... cool lyrics.

Points for Trying. See Marty Colon Review, minus the droney part. Very Jane's Addiction... I like that.

RobotTarzan...techno... I'm mean onhcet is so overdone. sorry.

Songfight Orchestra.... I had fun.

The special relatives...nothing jumping out at me.

titans....like the groove off the top...sounds fun, like a german car commericial. This is my number two or three pick of the fight so far... entertaining.

StateShirt... oh yeah. Wicked tune...which you often do. I love the drum line. And that chorus is deadly. Very good. I 'm still voting sober, cause that was some cool stuff, but you are the no-holds barred second in my books, and I 'm betting you win the fight anyway... of course, if you needed my vote to win... such is life, but well done sir!!

I think this fight was pretty good. Standouts are Sober, Deshead and Stateshirt followed by Titans... no real total stinkers, but a few average to below average efforts...anyway, coo coo ca choo.

1: tsforch, sober, max, titans, state shirt, deshead
2: pft, dopant, andre, martycq

max: so I play this game, Diablo II, and somebody made a rap song sung by the old-wizard character deckard cain, "the cain rap." this song reminds me of that. funny.

i voted for state shirt, but it was a bit late.

Better late than never.

Deshead - possible vote , but not likely..
man does this sound nice… like always the guitar strumming is great. The only downer on this song are the lyrics, there just not appealing to me… what about instead of that Celtic like acoustic guitar solo a nice country electric guitar, with some balls ??? oh and you mention lord again.

Dopant
like the feel to this, nice and laid back and jazzy, a bit decemberist.
But then the vocals come in…there not bad, but a bit sharp (pitchy for the music), I think a softer sadppy vox would of done the trick… for some reason reminds me of the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack… don’t know why ?

Luke Henley - possible vote
at first listen, didn’t really feel it that much..
but now, it makes a bit more sense. Enjoy the energy, even if is random shit
some of the parts have a radiohead quality to it, just with a very bad mix board., but once again it has nice passive aggressive energy

The Marty Conlon Quartet
too muddy to really have an honest opinion.

Max the Cat
well you won.
As for the song, I have high appreciation for your creativity from week to week, but this song is blahhh for me.. I would guess you enjoy audio books.

Points for Trying
were you going for a red hot chilly pepers tribute band thing ?
it has the aggressive flea bass, and the “hoooo” form frusiantes back up vocals.
The biggest downer on this is the lack of energy in the lead vox. The rhythm and vocal melody are find, is just sound week.

Robot Tarzan
WTF ? is this a rave scene ? I guess you were going for dance club crowed.
I bet you, you can play this in a real dance club and get away with it, usually people are so drunk and high on acid, the don’t give a shit, but unfortunately, am at work and there’s no fat drunk chicks trying to hit on me…
Yet…

The Sober Irishman - possible vote
this is all nice, and it has a great melody.
One thing I have notice in a lot of your song is that you usually have about 5 instruments all playing the same melody, especially that flute. I guess that’s a Celtic thing .

Songfight Orchestra- possible vote
hey leaf, have you heard of Royal Hunt, from Europe. they sound just like this… they have a killer bass player, but I don’t think their around anymore. Like this and the spin it gave to the orchestra mix.

The Special Relatives
yes you are special. But not a relative.

Titans of Electo-Clash
this is one of the few song in the entire songfight, where I enjoy the vocals more than the music.
Ohh shu did you still that chorus melody from somewhere ? it sound familiar.

Trihs Etats - vote
hope you can take this suspense intro into somewhere…
oh yeah state.. ok.
I think I like the edgy Trihs Etats better than state shirt, it has more guitars than keyboards.
Some day you should come out with a double album. one as state shirt the other one as Trihs Etats.

If my vote mattered it would have gone to Trihs Etats, but as it don’t it goes to Songfight Orchestra
