You're right there is a stutter there. The take had a pretty good feel otherwise and with my method there is never perfection.
By the way love your feedback. You not only find something positive to say which makes the negatives easier to swallow, but you say what you thought we could have done to make it better with explicit directives.
It seems you really put the time in to review...thanks man
foobar93 wrote: I think I remember you saying you don't produce these tracks in DAW software. Is that right? If so, you will be so so so happy once you make the switch. I think a little processing (noise filters, varying the guitar tone) and a little editing will dramatically improve the results your getting. In fact, I think it's remarkable how good you sound without modern tools - the songwriting is strong, I think. If you need help getting started, let me know and I'm there. I'm excited to see what you'd do with it.
Yeah I just use a looper and a single track recorder. I find if I write on the looper I have a hard time moving over to Pro Tools.
Do most people here write in their DAW? A survey anyone?
Anyways Thanks for the kind words.
Some reviews are all negative beginning to end I think your reviews (& Hoblit's) are the most helpful and I look forward to em.
Getting some feedback for reviews how about that!

g_rock, thanks for the review review. I'm glad you find it helpful and I'll try and do more like that.

I'm not sure exactly how your looper works, but I'm pretty sure one could configure Pro Tools to give you a very similar recording experience. If you can find a way to record all of the parts to separate tracks, looper-style, then you could go back and make small corrections. Even if you never re-record anything, you could still use a lot of effects as well as Pro Tools' awesome elastic audio features like tempo correction. (I'll stop pushing this now, but do message or PM me if I can help you make the switch. I think the results would be epic.)

Thanks for all of the reviews, denizens of the Songfight board! You have given me a warm welcome to a new environment, and I look forward to submitting more songs (though I haven't had a chance to finish Scientific 7...) and making use of the unfiltered peer reviews :o)

I haven't had a chance to write reviews for Come Out yet, but I'll try to do it before my second submission... I figure if I'm going to do Songfight I should do it right.

Hoblit

Enjoying the intro and energy. Nice intensity in the guitar part without being too loud even on my crappy laptop speakers. When people talk about garage bands, I think this is what they think they all sound like. If only they all sounded so good! Something in the backing vocals is bothering me, but again not sure what to suggest. Loving the part around 1:45, with the background yells. I think I'd like if the prechorus dropped down or some things dropped out in order to give the chorus more punch when it comes back. But overall this is a great track. I am not super sure what the song is about, but it's obviously fun to listen to and just the right length. Tight.
I hit the 'Review This Week's Fight link, copy everything in the post and paste it to notepad. Do my reviews there...log back into the boards, post a reply and paste all of my notepad reviews (with the original BBCode) back in and hit submit.

Thank you for the kind review. There is a slight bridge to the chorus and I intentionally made it more mundane before the hooky chorus but I guess the impact wasn't quite what I was aiming for. Perhaps my 'yelly bassist' (me again, of course) ruins it by yelling right into the chorus, therefore lessening the build up.

Thanks again.

Ha, also thank YOU for this kind review. Yeah, I want to produce a 'sound' I'm going for and even appreciate but at the same time not sound like I don't know what I'm doing. When I was playing live in a couple of bands a few years back, I thought that we had that advantage. We weren't just screamy punk band like the one on stage before us (or the one before THAT or the one that came on AFTER us etc...). We had that dynamic where we could play our instruments tight, sing well and still have 'room to drink some beers' in order to avoid the polished sound and carry that same energy that the other bands had to simply scream to get.

Banana Dan - Reminds me of "I like it when it goes, w-when it goes boom". The tom drops up against the straight highhat break is superb. Did you trap a hottie in your studio?:]

Berkeley Social Scene - I really like the way the chorus just -begins- The Lyrics.. are kind of like Banana Dan's! I'm guessing this will be a trend.. My suggestion would be not having such accurate harmonies.

Billy and the Psychotics - I love your vocal and lyric. You've got an awesome voice, Ms Billy. I have no right to state this, but that chime melody could be explored better.:]

Bombernaughts - Conceptual clone music - SURELY, MORE IS WHAT I NEED! Minimal, and the sounds do not grow or "mutate" whatsoever which leaves the vocals to carry much - and their layers blend perfectly. Much love for this piece.

Christopher Broxson - Percussively "I don't have the time to be deep" is obviously spiftastic. Nice concept and execution.

Chuck Chuck Moose - Speaking of execution.. Chik Fil-a legacy continues to enlighten. Your vocals are so unique and terrifying to critique. Your enunciation rhythmically is more complex than this music is able to carry, imo. "Try it today" - these are hilarious and sad lyrics. You evoker, you!

enter it in the art show - Ahh, my coffee likes being smelled to your music. Best male vocals yet - I love that your falsetto isn't perfect. Freakin' nice lyrics!

Foobar - I expect George Michael to wax about losing self-respect.. or his bong. Is pretty.

g Rock - Very Air. Love it. I can imagine Pink Floyd backup singers maximizing the space.

Havarti on Rye - "Phil Schneider as a carrot!" Indigestible.

Hey, It's Romer - Better Homes and Gardens presents the earl grey phat booty brewmaster. You guys are one bbq away from my backyard. All that's missing is Mario Kart and heroin.

Hoblit - First off - FUCK YES!! AAAAHHHHH!!!!! Second - not gay enough. Where's the Mexican siren singing and cowbell breakdown?:] At least your not rapping about tea and lesbians unlike some entries.

Hortus Ortus - Who could not stalk your lovely family on vacation? "Epiquid"? Is that like a Pacific tree octopus? You have beautiful voices.

Humanic - Home Sweet Crater. I love this piece lots, the robot in me loves the human, while the human in me wants the f out from inside of this robot, uh, and enjoys a delicious bowl of Humanic. The saxophone noise is colorful, and really sets the tone well.

Inflatable Vegetables - Fiesta maximus! You got my heroin?!:] Clever lyrics and actually a really catchy insanity.

Jay String & DJ Whyz - Vocals are processed nicely - everything is. Excellently nasty idea - music for misanthropes! The heaving is quite cool.

Klownhole - "You'll feel atomically reassembled at Klownhole's Aqualung Day Spa & Trauma Infliction Center." This is what should be played during the Hunger Games instead of dialogue.

R. Mosquito - I really loved your last entry, this one is just as incredible. You are one of my new favorite artists. What a very awesome tone to your voice.

Roach Bites - "vanilla wafer hatred pedigree," what more can be (gutturally) expressed legally? Excellent concept, very creepy, masculine and minimal. Minus huge drums means it's ready for drill and bass processing!

The Hell Yeahs - Great drum mixing - this is again something Godzilla would twist to over Tokyo. Cute girlie voice and such a cool vibe.

The Pin Drops - I want to steal your band name. Mix sets in pajamas and goodies from the French bakery, obsession and coffee.

TRJones - Great sexy rasp. The lyrics match the vibe nicely.

This quote system is confusing for me - hopefully I'm doing this part right. Okay, for my crap I've been using Propellerheads Reason 5.0 instead of my midi equipment which is incommunicado. By "write" I assume that you mean the lyrics (my bane) which are almost always the worst possible thing I can do to music. Do you actually have text cues in your software?

My voice is too weak for the concept of musical disaster tinged with literalism alongside heaps of overprocessing, so having no idea how to include lyrics cues in Reason I instead made text-to-speech samples. The chorus was in my head first, which is rare, and built the piece around that mainly.

Your piece was not very synthetic sounding to me - aside from a hiss (microphone?). Dripping with melody, I presumed your piece was painstakingly recorded in tracks. It's beautiful and feels hand-crafted, that's why I mentioned Air.

Thank you, master of ceremony protocol droid. The chime melody? Are you referring to the bell track in the bridge? And by explored better, do you mean used more?
I wanted a sparse bridge that was completely different from the rest of the song. I had a thought of what to do. Then Dee said she had an idea and hit me with the Rhodes track. Of course I loved it. But it was too sparse. So she broke out the bell and recorded a track to let the tips shimmer in the light and I backed it with a mellow guitar track and we said, yep, that's the stuff! :)

By the way, Ms Billy is actually the lovely miss Denise McAlister Hudson, aka DJRD, aka djrangerdenn. Affectionately known as Dee. :D
