I saw a video last night on Rage that I haven't seen for almost 40 years.
And I remembered almost every single bit of it.
In the late 1970's - Countdown was an institution in Australia. On at 6pm ever Sunday night and everyone watched it religiously. One night in about 1978 - a bloke few people had ever heard of, called "Iggy Pop" was a guest. I think it had a significant impact on my life.
QOTD - what blew your mind when you were a little kid?
Here is the video:
Hard to see on this Youtube clip, but on the telly last night you could see clearly the expression of horror (and confused lust) on the face of the young 12/13? year old girl at 3:20ish - just after Iggy pulls the microphone out of the front of his trousers.
At age 10 - I hade no idea who this bloke was - but I felt like I needed to know more.

QotD: For me it was Alice Cooper. Awesome rock and bigger than life. As a kid that still believed in fairy tales, there was a small part of me that thought he really was some kind of warlock or something mystical. So I'd ask my sister to buy me Alice Cooper records and one time bought me an Alice Cooper poster. I was already messing around on guitar, but now I was jumping around with it like a rock star. Eventually I figured I better learn how to play this thing so that I'll be the whole package, lol. I was around 8 or 9.
Another turning point was seeing the Rolling Stones on TV for their new song "only rock and roll". It was the release of their official video and I was 12 at that time. I just remember how cool it was that they were playing in one of those inflatable dome things, then as they were playing, it started filling with foam. I first thought, I WUNNA BE IN THERE! Then I asked my dad why they are getting covered in foam, because it was an odd thing to see and made no sense. He told me, because they can and have the money to do about anything they want. I thought, hmmm, that's it, I'm going to be a rock star.
Oddly, I've never been a Stones fan and still not. Just don't care for them.
By the way, watching that Iggy vid made me chuckle at just how much lip sinking no one questioned back then. Damn, a couple times he didn't even mouth the words, lmao! Also, I was an early Stooges fan (not discovered until years after the original Stooges) until Iggy went all Mick Jaggar. David Bowie ruined him and turned him into a British pop rock act. He was much bigger in the UK.

The making of Star Wars and sequels. I totally wanted to do movie special effects when I was little. Now I realize that stop-motion was probably darn tedious, but it looked so cool on the shows. I also remember them looking for found sounds to simulate things like the blasters. If I remember right the blaster sound was made by tapping on a metal wire that braced some sort of telephone pole or suchlike.

Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. Also, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, although that probably wasn't the best thing for a 9-year-old to read.

Pot and King Crimson when I was 11. Highly recommended.

That blew my mind at about 19 - and I became a huge Vonnegut fan.fluffy wrote: Also, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, although that probably wasn't the best thing for a 9-year-old to read.
But recently I bought Slaughterhouse 5 as an audiobook to listen to on one of my long drives for work - and though I have read it a dozen times over the years and always considered it one of my favourite books - I actually became quite annoyed with it while listening. Not sure if my tastes have changed - or that "so it goes" thing is just less annoying when you read it yourself, as opposed to having it read to you.

Re: 14/9/13
Did you ever see the film adaptation of Slaughterhouse-Five? I felt they did a pretty good job, considering how nonlinear and conceptual the story is. "So it goes" seems like it could be annoying if the orator draws extra-special attention to it; when reading it, it's just sort of a background element that ties everything together, but it would be so easy to turn it into a "BAD WOLF!!!" moment.
I also liked the film of Breakfast of Champions even though it lost about half of its flavor (and plot) in the process. They made the right decisions for which parts to focus on, although I suspect that many parts of it only make sense to someone who's read the book.
