What is involved in "production"?

Ask questions and get answers about how to make music in any particular way. Hardware or songwriting or whatever.

i think the old paradigm of "music producer" took on the role of that similar to a movie producer, almost a project manager of sorts that brought many different roles together within a set time frame and within a set budget. in this old paradigm, there would be many different roles played by different people. mixer. engineer. mastering guru. hardware tech guys. but as technology has empowered home based recording on the cheap, the role of producer has come more to be all inclusive to the artist. at least that seems to be the case around here.

the Rubin/Cash collab is an interesting one i completely agree with c hack. he definitely brought out the edginess of cash's music. even more interesting is Rubin's association with Tom Petty. compare "wildflowers" (arguably the best thing petty has done and my favorite of anything he's done) and "into the great wide open", produced by jeff lynne (the bipolor of Rubin) and what i think is an overproduced piece of commercial crap drivel. same artist but huge difference in the end result.

Yes... now, I first realized the effect a producer had on a band when Metallica switched to Bob Rock... holy crap, what a difference.... in fact, Bob Rock colours everything he does with his style, and in arranging too. Before that , I had believed that the band made the whole sound happen... I had no clue back then that a producer did ANYTHING. I thought they were like an executive or something, so I'm like "big deal".

Well, apparently it is one.
