i'm listening to everclear's "return to santa monica" and i sincerely wonder whether we should be sincerely concerned for art alexakis's well being.
it's like crappy local band studio demos of proven hits of theirs from the past. "wonderful" worked precisely because it was crazy overbudget overproduced. hearing it overproduced but underbudget is sad. decent performances, but it's not that different from the band that plays at the kowloon restaurant in my hometown every weekend night.
/i dug their first three records and found moments on the rest. guilty pleasure.

I suspect you are seeing the one way the music industry is damaged. I suspect he doesn't have the rights to his master recordings and therefore is unable to sell his own music. By rerecording it he is able to then sell them, and the use of those recordings, probably at a fraction of what the owner of those original recordings will sell them for giving him a higher profit, which he may not be getting at all from his older recordings.

I was happy when Spin announced new Everclear. I was disappointed not to hear anything new. The whole album is very studio clean in a bad way. No real energy. Surprisingly, my favorite song on it is Tom Petty's "I won't back down". I like Tom Petty a lot, but he did a great cover imo. On the other hand, his Joker cover makes me want to go to sleep and never wake up EVER!

i never really liked their covers. i know that alexakis did go bankrupt, so he did likely sell off his rights.
but yeah, sad stuff. it was just depressing.

Re: oh my. oh my. (everclear)
These guys just finished an acoustic set in my office. Two old "lesser" singles I didn't recognize, then their latest/new single, then two old big singles "Father of Mine" and "Santa Monica". They sounded pretty decent and seemed like good dudes. Before they played the big hits they said "We're going to play these now but we have to stop filming the performance because we can't afford the rights to tape these." Sounds like indeed they some rights ownership issues with some of their most popular material. He mentions it here:
