Artists and drummers...or a drumming artist!

Post by Justincombustion »

I was hoping someone had some knowledge they could share with me about painting drum heads. I wanna paint our name on the bass head: Is there a paint I should avoid? Is there something specific I should use? I have no art knowledge, but can learn on the fly!

Thanks!

There are places that will do this for you, of course. Here is one but I'm pretty sure I've seen it cheaper. Still, it would probably be worth it in the long run to just e-mail some company a big image file and get it perfect the first time.

Off the top of my head, assuming you have a computer and it's the band name only, not wonderful artwork:
Pick a font and print the letters of the bandname individually, and as large as you need them on a sheet of A4 (letter size) paper.
Carefully cut them out, then using temporary 'spray mount' glue them to the bass drum head.
Get a can of spray paint and spray the whole of the drum head, or just around the outside of the letters.
Leave until dry and then remove the cutout letters.
Voila, bandname reversed out on bass drum head.
If you want the name in a colour, paint the background before gluing on the letters.

Or... Print the letters out onto Sticker paper and then put the stickers onto the drum head. I have a TMBG sticker on my bass head and it is not coming off. Trust me, I tried.

If you get a coated drum head, you should be able to use regular paint on it.

Actually, Sober, although I appreciate your sentiment, Stencils are actually more punk rock than loose spray-paint. For example, the Clash and their stencilling of messages onto their clothes ... no point carrying a seditionary message if no-one can read it from a distance while you're jumping around, now is there?

I was trying to save the sticker off the head since I had split the Bass head away from it's ring while over tightening it. I ended up taking the head off the rim then reglue'n it to the rim. Which worked out better than I had planned. Thus the sticker was saved... for now.

We need to get our <a href="http://glenncase.songhole.org/images/gl ... f">LOGO</a> that Bortwein made, painted on the drum head, that is all there is to it.

And, if we win the van in the <a href="http://www.icehouse.net/jupitermusic/bs ... ml">Battle for the Van</a>, that is the same logo we must have on the van!

that is all.

ROCK!

I dunno, I really liked that font I printed out. I'd like to find a way to put that writing on the head. (It's in Microsoft Word and it's called "Viner Hand ITC")
I think the best way so far is either the sticker thing or the light sticker/spray paint thing.

Even if it isn't used on the drum head, I think that would be rad as hell.

I really am fond of the look of it, and I am sure we will use it here and there (with your kind permission, of course)

Yeah, they be your drums, I'm pretty much fine with whatever (within reason... no putting "Glenn is a total dickhead" on the drum head please :) )

Oh yeah, it IS a freaking sweet logo man! It's just that there is no way I could paint it on there. I'll be lucky if I can do this without screwing it up!
I would like to put that logo on a t-shirt or something, though. It just...fits us.

But I think to show true solidarity, we need to tattoo that logo on our backs. You go first and I'll see how it turns out.

Glenn, if you win the van, have "Christian Youth Ministry" printed on it. That way, if you break down, people will actually stop to help you. Cops wont give you tickets, and people will bless all your travels.

Have you considered not using paint at all? At one point I wanted the "pathetic-dog-skull-and-crossbones" from the Limp Bizkit "Break Stuff" video on the front of my guitar amp cabinet.

Image

I would have bought one except I couldn't find one for sale for the life of me.

So I went to the store and found a big cheap plastic storage container with a white lid, drew the design on a giant piece of cardboard and then taped it securely onto the lid. Then I cut through the cardboard and the plastic on the lid with an Exacto knife, and then took the cardboard off. It looked very pro and people even asked me where they could buy one.
I'm back.

2) Glue
