Kill Bill, Part 2

Post by the Jazz »

Okay, I know this movie's been out for a while, but I just saw it (at home on DVD) and hot damn, it was way better than the first one! The plot and dialogue was infinitely more satisfying, and the fights were more interesting.
Let cake eat them.

I just saw it last week myself. I didn't hear much buzz about it when it came out, but I was surprised how little action there was in it. I didn't really mind, because I usually find action sequences in movies to be pretty boring (as in Kill Bill Vol. 1, for example), but I was thinking "Man, I bet a lot of people were disappointed in this". I liked it a lot, though. The scene with the two women and the pregnancy test was classic, and I loved it when Darryl and Uma both fell backwards and he went to a split screen.

I dunno, I might've liked the first one better. But I consider it one big movie anyway.

Anyone else get the impression that it could've been one really good 3-hour movie rather than 2 pretty good 2-hour ones?

No. No way in hell. The first half is, of course, his send up of his favorite 70's martial arts films, with a few 70's era expoitation-film references thrown in. The second one is more of a traditional QT film, with it's distinctive dialog and great timing. The two movies are so dissimilar (for instance, the number killings the Bride makes in the second movie is a deliberate contrast against the first film) that I feel any median between the two would be less then the sum of it's parts.

EDIT: Oh... yeah, cutting an hour (maybe half on hout, including Samuel Jackson's pointless story) could improve the movie. Missed that.

I could definitely hack a good half hour out of the first movie, but it's be hard to cut much out of the second one. I also consider it one big movie.

Speaking of action scenes being boring, I avoid John Woo movies in theatres just because I know I can't fast forward through his so-called "epic" or even "operatic" action sequences. Excruciatingly dull and self-indulgent.

A 2-second train wreck filmed from 6 different angles, each one of them shown in succession in slow-motion, wasting in total 18 minutes of screen time.

Here's the original script, as one really good 3 (4? longer?) hour movie.

http://www.killbill2.net/script.html

There's a few things in that script I wish he'd done.

Mai Pai or whatever his name is... Fucking classic.

I can't help but laugh every time I think of him doing that kung-fu beard stroke.

I want to try some of that stuff he makes in the blender with the crushed ice. On the DVD, in a interview with Mr. Tarantino, he says that the first one has all the questions and the second one the answers. I love the huge knife that Bill uses to cut his daughter's sandwich. Could anyone else other than him have played Bill? I think not. Great casting. But "move your big toe" was a classic too as well as "I'm Buck and I like to Fuck".
so . . . when was the last time you backed up?

That Hong Kong Woo stuff is so ultraviolent and bloody, after a while it overloads your brain and it becomes ridiculously funny. That is weird.
