Hey all, trying to find an fx chain to achieve this sound (which afaik lives solely in my head, and the occasional horror movie soundtrack[?]).
Anyone know of a plugin (or chain) that detunes in the decay tail?
No examples, sorry. Just my imperfect memory of a sound that I may or may not have heard in the real.

This free delay can do some cool frequency shifting stuff:

You could try automating the detune function of a plugin. Like that valhalla plugin or bitspeak or a host of other plugins with detune/shift/etc., function(s). Sounds tedious, though.

Logic's Delay Designer can do pitch effects. I dunno if it would do what you want, and I dunno if it's available in GarageBand, but it's a stock Logic plugin.

Re: SFX Question: Detuned Decaying Music Box
When I want to do weird-ass pitch-manipulation delay stuff, I use Logic's Tape Delay plugin. I set wet to 0%, dry to 100%, and automate increasing the delay length with an appropriate smoothing value. That plus feedback can do some neat stuff.
You can also do some cool stuff along these lines by turning on FlexTime and setting it to "tempophone" mode. That only works on recordings, though, rather than on softsynths (but you can turn a softsynth into a recording with the "Bounce In Place" function).
Anyway. I dunno what DAW you're using but I think REAPER has similar functionality as well.

Y'all are the best! *heart emoji things for EVERYONE*
Found a virtual instrument that's *close* to the core sound I was looking for (Muzik Box, $5 !!!, download does have an AU component), looking forward to trying your suggestions w/it tomorrow for the final demented polish
Logic Pro 9 is my ancient DAW currently; finally replaced the dead-since-Christmas-2018 Mac Mini (2011) this past February with a similar (read cheap) vintage MacBook Pro that runs most of the legacy software I used to use.
