BMI here for less than a year. It wasn't until I had a music supervisor actually ask for my # that I got off my ass and signed up.

Oh, have you had your stuff sync licensed? I hear that's where the only actual money is at for royalties these days.

Well, no.... I submitted one song to a music supervisor for a possible sync opportunity. I'm assuming it wasn't used as I haven't heard anything in the past four months. Although with all the crap going on it's possible production was halted and something could still happen.

And there is a local guy who is recently back from Berkeley School of Music who is working as a publisher/song plugger with a local cowriter of mine. As a result I've signed a contract with him for around ten songs.

And finally, I've been told by the local NSAI representative that I should have at least a hand full of songs on some libraries to be used for sync opportunities, etc., I've just been too lazy to get the final versions done and to research the appropriate libraries to submit to.

As a Berkeley resident I feel required to say it's "Berklee College of Music" :P But anyway, that's cool about those opportunities, hopefully something pans out!

I'm an ASCAP member and I do not recommend it. Go BMI if you're going to join a PRO. I hear they still suck, but at least they suck less.

You guys are so lucky. In Germany the only option is GEMA and if you sign up with them, it's an exclusive deal (they automatically get to do the collecting for everything you've ever made). I recall an event where GEMA charged an artist for putting up his own songs on his own website...

Yeah ASCAP does the signup-for-life thing too. Which is a big part of why I regret signing up for it.

I mean technically you can quit but they sure don't make it easy to do.

As a hick from Missouri, I feel it's my duty to inform you that you're lucky I got as close as I did. Granted... wasn't all that close. ;)
