Not to disrupt this topic, but, on a different topic, is anybody interested in volunteering to manage live streaming the event? You'd probably need a tripod, an extra phone or camera, a long power cable for the phone of camera so it can be plugged in and not running on battery, a way to hook it up to a laptop (maybe require another long cable), and a laptop, with a power cable (a long one and/or extension cable/power strip). We can get somebody set up to stream to the Song Fight YouTube channel I think.

Ok - I may be getting ahead of myself (a 20 hour flight notwithstanding) - but I land at Denver at 9:30ish on a Wednesday night - and, there is a chance that the first thing I will want to do is sing karaoke. This appears to be the closest to my accommodation:

If anyone else is around who might want to join me...

Just a suggestion from random googling - happy to take any other suggestions.

Jumping on plane tomorrow- do we have a local chat group or something?

Maybe a young person could sort this? I’d prefer not to pack my pigeon.

Do you usually bring your own power strip to plug all your components into so that your setup just requires one outlet? Or would you need a power strip provided?

Sounds like you might need a MIDI keyboard and if so there is one. Otherwise sounds like you need an XLR cable and a free channel on the house mixer, to plug your DI box into the house mixer?
Is there space on stage for me to be able to set up the keyboard Saturday and leave it until it is time for BSS to play?
Probably. Leah's looking at the space and sound system today, but I seem to remember it being a pretty big stage. If you just want to use the Casiotone I'm providing as your keyboard and hook up the MIDI unit when you're on, then it will definitely be up there all night.
Thanks. I am definitely bringing my own keyboard as I need the full 88 keys and I am more comfortable with my own equipment.

A few of you have asked about my COVID and sick policy as host.

Here’s what I’m thinking, though it’s a bit late 😂

1. COVID is still out there, and it would be really great if everybody could apply some basic common sense around not risking turning this into a super spreader event.

Meaning, if you’re having any symptoms or any start when you are here (“it’s just a cold,” “I think it’s allergies,” etc.) you should take a COVID test every day to confirm you continue to test negative and wear a mask when not eating/drinking/singing out of respect for not wanting to get others sick.

2. If you were to test positive for COVID, that would really suck. Everybody will feel bad for you, but your best move would be to sit the event out. If you aren’t singing you could potentially mask but I’d ask that you eat and drink away from others (preferably outside) and be at the venue as little as possible.

Think about it this way: If you get everyone else sick, that’s a much bigger bummer. Folks need to travel home, some internationally, and many have travel plans immediately following the event.

TL; DR: If you have symptoms, mask up, even if you test negative. I have plenty of KN95/N95 to share.

Personal stake in this: I am traveling to Ireland on the 24th and I tend to get bronchitis when I get a cold, much less COVID. Selfishly think of me?

Yeah absolutely. I still have a residual cough from getting COVID a month ago (and which put me in the ER at one point) and I’m definitely testing. Pretty much every time I fly I end up getting sick with something, even though I mask. As someone in multiple high risk groups I take this shit super seriously. (And like you, even with minor colds I usually end up getting bronchitis. This past month has been awful for me and I’m only just now feeling good enough to travel.)

Personally I plan on masking everywhere anyway, which has the nice side effect of giving me more moisture to work with in the dry desert heat.

But also remember that COVID is surging right now and absolutely nobody (except me) is masking on my flight to Denver, and masks only stop you from spreading it to others, not from getting it from folks. Masking is just the right thing to do, because you could be spreading it without knowing it.

Also despite my lingering cough I am probably the least likely person to spread COVID to anyone (since I got it just a month ago, have been testing negative for two weeks, and have still been mostly isolating and always distancing because I’m a hermit anyway), in case anyone feels nervous around me.

I don't think that's accurate? IIRC yes, it's particularly important for infected people to wear masks to reduce the amount of exhaled droplets containing the virus, but also non-infected people do reduce their risk of infection somewhat by wearing N95/KN95 type masks because they can filter out some droplets containing the virus?

My knowledge may be outdated, then. What I've heard is that in general, masks prevent outgoing droplets from spreading far but don't do a whole lot to prevent incoming virus particles especially in situations where the air is saturated.

Anecdotally, the first two times I got COVID I was wearing a mask during the exposure event, and in the most recent one, I wasn't masked but several people who were masked also got sick. So I have personal experience with not wanting to particularly trust them to prevent infection.

I think the key difference is between "prevent infection" and "reduce risk of infection". If you are exposed to enough viral load for long enough, that reduction of risk still won't be enough to prevent infection.

Fine, whatever. In any case, my point is just that people should wear masks to help prevent spreading it, and not rely on them to avoid getting sick. And you might not know if you are carrying it. Even tests aren't totally reliable for that. So the safest course of action is for everyone to test AND for everyone to mask.
