Booches' Burger is a (Delicious Burger reviews)
Booches is a bar, restaurant, and pool hall on 9th Street in downtown Columbia, Missouri, that was established in 1884. At over 140 years old, it is the oldest pool hall in Columbia. Booches has had six locations in downtown Columbia. Since 1928 it has been at its current location on Ninth Street. In 2019, Joan Niesen and Laken Litman of Sports Illustrated named Booches' hamburgers as the "#1 Greatest College Town Eats" in the nation.

Re: Booches' Burger is a (Delicious Burger reviews)
Clorpo+Ghombie Who’s the guy with the deep voice from Jurassic 5? He always stood out and there's something reminiscent in your phrasing if not the pitch. ‘The feeling of the meat in my hand’ - hehe. Yeah, I like your voice!
Dead Ambassadors - So this is the Booches Burger reference? Rocking riff. Low blood sugar anthem. O.J.’s really rocking out to this with a piece of bread in his hand. There are some slight phrasing issues (0:57) but nothing major. The guitar solo is pretty sweet. Love the ‘WITH CHEESE!’
Hoblit - Another rocking one with profanity, which I’m all for. My son has his hat on backwards, and is throwing his arms around, which I take as a sign of strong approval. I like the ‘I like ketchup / he likes ketchup’ thing. Classic guitar sound. Maybe a tiny bit too long? Nah.
Idiot Kings - This one grew on me. I like the idea of Ronald calling in the Burger King. I have early memories of the H.R. Pufnstuf-esque McDonald’s characters, but I don’t know if they were ever used in advertising in AU. They definitely existed as playground equipment at Melville McDonald's c. 1987. I'm sensing some parallels between this song and Dylan's The Hurricane, partly musical but also in the narrative style.
The Magnetic Letters - I know the trope that kids love stories about poo/poop is hackneyed, but I gave almost-three-year-old O.J. free reign and that's what he came up with. Maybe not ideal for Song Fight, but we've had some good laughs, and hopefully it sparks something in him.
Sunlit Decay - ‘That’s a funny sound!’ says my 3 y.o. collaborator. This one’s for my friend Pete! I was in a noise band with him until recently, but I was always the one trying to find a melody so you see I’m not best placed to review. Your voice sounds a bit like Les Claypool’s, which I like.
Aloysius - Yeah, this is great. It sounds really authentic. I was watching a documentary about Blowfly a while ago, and I wonder what he would have done lyrically to your ‘delicious burger’. Love the gospel ‘oh’s at 2:40.
Berkeley Social Scene - O.J. was spinning around to this one - he approves. Those harmonies in the chorus are sweet. And the synth/guitar duo at 2:00 - superb! Now my son is headbanging. One slight criticism is the vocals are a bit indistinct, but you guys know what you're doing.

Re: Booches' Burger is a (Delicious Burger reviews)
Sorry for the late reviews, was in NYC over the weekend to see Pulp (which was amazing) but real life stuff got a bit shuffled.
Hoblit - This may be one of the most impassioned pleas for a burger I've heard committed to song. I really enjoyed the two impossible nods, even if the second one was a bit more on the nose. Hard agree on Impossible being a delicious burger indeed.
Magnetic Letters - Following the muse of a child is such a cool idea. I feel like if I was stoned I would find this mind blowing. I wish the lyrics were posted, they're a bit difficult to discern.
Dead Ambassadors - Right off the bat with the riffage I love that this song is going to be about burgers haha. I wish there was a little more effort to fit the lyrics in better without rushing some of the words (and good lord I am the last person who should be making this comment) because this would be an obvious vote for me if so. As it stands? A possible vote.
The Idiot Kings - When I saw the optional challenge a murder ballad in McDonaldland seemed like the only place to go. The Professor seemed like a good candidate to be offed because I couldn't bear to do it to Grimace, and no one would buy Captain Crook running for office.
Berkeley Social Scene - I think the genres with the topic is really the big winner overall for me this fight. This has such a 70s LA sound to it, like this could have been the Eagles' followup to One of these Nights. Imagining Don Henley singing these lyrics is very funny to me. This is a great tune with or without Don. Killer leads. Definite vote.
Aloysius - Fantastic. Love that I have a "let's sing about Mayor McCheese being corrupt" buddy. Excellent vocal performance, and the lyrics are great. Clear vote for me.
Clorpo+Ghombie - I'm genuinely shocked at how many kickass songs came about as a result of this title and optional challenge haha. Love the lyrics and vibe. No notes. Vote.
Sunlit Decay - Noise is almost always a soft spot for me. Almost always. I think in this particular fight there is such strong competition that I can't give a vote here even though I love the disjointed mess of it all.

Re: Booches' Burger is a (Delicious Burger reviews)
Aloysius:
This has got to be my favorite song of the fight. The vocals are GORGEOUS, and the musical genre seems like a perfect fit for the song topic. And that chorus, god damn.
Berkeley Social Scene:
This xylophone-type riff at the top reminds me of the theme song for... i think Law and Order? I dig it. Great vocal harmonies. The track feels like it cuts off a little weirdly right at the end but that's a small quibble. I really like this.
Clorpo and Ghombie:
This is me and my friend!
Dead Ambassadors:
This one is just fun. I'm bopping my head along to it as I'm listening. As someone who's almost always hungry, I can really relate to the lyrics. I don't really have any notes to give on this one. Nice!
Hoblit:
As a fellow vegetarian also stoked that Burger King has an Impossible Burger now, I feel you brother. My partner and I have been quoting this song back and forth to each other all week. Tons of fun. Nice work!
The Idiot Kings:
I read the lyrics to this before the songs went up, and I adore them. Listening to the song now, I really love how you handled the chorus. The delivery in the verses feels a little stilted to me sometimes -- I think based on the meter of the lyrics I was expecting more of a country ballad. Occasionally it feels like you maybe have too few syllables in a line and have to stretch the words. Still, I really like the instrumentation, you tell a great story, and the chorus is epic.
The Magnetic Letters:
This is adorable. Also reminds me a little bit of some sample-based trip-hop I used to listen to. Like Lemon Jelly and stuff. Feels like the music was built around the vocals, which seems like a cool production challenge. Definitely some fun reggae influence. This is a lot of fun to listen to, and I just can't get over how cute it is.
Sunlit Decay:
I don't think I'm sophisticated enough to appreciate what's going on here. I find it kind of hard to listen to, but I have trouble criticizing that, because I think that's kind of what you're going for. The chorus is pretty funny, though, for what it's worth.

Re: Booches' Burger is a (Delicious Burger reviews)
Aloysius:
This is really cool. I like the old street sound ... minimal but effective. The tickle guitar lick during the versus and then the key licks in the chorus. The organ solo is so welcome and bluesy. But I don't want to leave out the story. I like the rap, my cheese. I love how the verse is a comprehensible story and then it slides into a tasty groove for singing the chorus. All the vocal bits and pieces really make it stand out. This gets a vote and it is definitely one of my favorites of this fight. Great work, man.
Berkeley Social Scene:
The mix was a little muddy on my house speakers but listening in my studio really clarified everything. And in that, I like the waterbed of music here and I like that it's colorful. I dig the clickity clack guitar strumming and the thick bass, although I wish it wasn't pushed so far back during the guitar solo(s). However, I really do like the guitars in this one and perhaps this was a way to let them shine.
Clorpo and Ghombie:
This gets a vote. I love the Hamburgler perspective and the fun taken in the seriousness against the siliness that's really happening. The almost-drug-like references are just great! And at the end of the song I threw up my gang arms and said "robble robble"... then YOU DID TOO. That was a Songfight! moment for me. Great song this week, take my vote!
Dead Ambassadors:
Spacey jam! The guitar solo is ridiculous! I like the "I need delicious burger" run down and vocal melody half steps mirrored by the aggressive guitar. Your lyrics leave me worrying a little for you and your burger situation though. Both the run-through licks and chorded ringing. The phaser on both really gives it that crazy sound. DIG! This is a great tune for a pretty darn good fight and may you get that cheeseburger.
Hoblit:
I'm still working on getting my mix-master back from haitus but he's showing up for part of what we're doin' here. I'm learning that I'm rolling off too hard on everything, leaving a thinner mix than I really want. But I did want to give my tribute to Burger King who is a lifesaver on road trips for my wife and I. (We need a Delicious Taco title now so I can shout out to Taco Bell) OH, and this has to be the first time I've ever seen my wife actually react to my music... like, she actually likes this song. That's a win in itself!
The Idiot Kings:
Another serious tone for a ridiculous premise. BUT like the others like it, love it too. The chorus hook is very hooky. I like the simple melody choice and harmonies. Against that droning guitar it sounds 'beautiful'. It really paints a little light in all that tremmelo darkness. I have to vote for this one just based on me singing YOUR delicious burger chorus. Now we just to have a moment of silence for The Professor and the ordeal they must have faced in their demise. I shudder to even think about it.
The Magnetic Letters:
This is cute and I'm glad it is among the rest. There have been a couple of times children have made Songfight! smile. That's some fancy editing and I'm assuming some autotune although I'm thinkin' they must have gotten close. That echo on the child's voice is reminescent of that old 80s song, Pass The Dutchie and that's also charming. Thank you for this piece!
Sunlit Decay:
I like the distorted bass up & down bends.

Thanks for noticing the 'impossible' shout outs and I'll wink about the one 'beyond' subtlety in there too.

I'm glad your kid likes it and I can appreciate a hat on backward, myself.
If I had time, both my wife and agree that there should have been a change-up in the other answer-back - like, "...mustard too" ... 'how bout you?'.
Also, thank you for noticing the guitar tone. I definitely was trying to get a 'classic sound' and was thinking of going all out with a 'era', but ultimately decided against it and went with the actual flow I was having.
I appreciate the feedback!

You would think so, right?! I usually melodyne the crap out of my own singing, but nope, he was just free styling while I stuck a mic in his face for five minutes; lo and behold, it was all in tune with itself! His mum sings when she thinks no one is listening, and she's good, so he must get it from her.Hoblit wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 6:43 pm

Thanks for indulging my parental pride, and for the kind words everyone! It made my day. Back to my old auto-tuned vocals for now, though xo

I'm not a vegetarian, but I try to be conscientious about meat consumption for all of the reasons, and Impossible is the first brand to come along to have me convinced I don't need a beef burger. It's just so good.

This feels so good to hear. J5 was the first hip hop group I really got into, and Chali 2na (the guy you're thinking of) was my favorite member. Definitely some of his phrasing in there. I didn't even realize! Thank you for your kind words.Merle Fyshwick wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 5:29 amClorpo+Ghombie Who’s the guy with the deep voice from Jurassic 5? Clorpo and Ghombie in their debut burgle a win away from BSS and Aloysius. Congrats!
Also something wonky was going on with the votes. I don't think it was foul play, probably just a very confused tenacious person (in New Jersey, from what I can tell) who has been voting repeatedly for 10 days for three artists to win the previous fight. I noticed it because one of those artists isn't even in the current fight. I scrubbed all those votes.

Super strange. My VPN location is normally New Jersey but when there was the weirdness with this before, I started turning it off when voting just to be safe.Lunkhead wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2024 1:06 pmAlso something wonky was going on with the votes.
