If you want to get home alive (Don't Look At Me That Way reviews)

Post by Pigfarmer Jr »

I'm very mild, I'm very meek
My will is strong, but my won't is weak
So don't look at me that way

I feel a thrill when you arrive
And while you're near, I simply thrive
But if you want to get home alive
Don't look at me that way

Banjelica: I like the banjo being featured, more than just an add on to the arrangement. There's a slow wave of rhythm that I like a lot in this song. I think this is arranged very well, perfectly to get a slow groove across. The melody is catchy enough. It's nearly the perfect length and keeps me from getting burnt out though the title line is pretty repetitive (hooks are, you know?)

Johnny Cashpoint: Reversed intro is cool but that's a sudden "first" note into the song proper. Is that a banjo or synth/vsti? Whatever, it works well in the arrangement. I'm not sure the instruments are mixed perfectly level-wise, but I can hear all the parts and nothing stands out as severely out of place. I hear the lead vox and the backing vox clashing slightly on a note. That being said, this is growing on me.

Joy Sitler: There's a cool attack in the vocal. I love that it sounds like you are struggling to make that note on "even" on the opening phrase. It's delightfully tasty and works perfectly for me. The arrangement seemed pretty static on first listen but as I come back I like how it builds at the front side. This is a deceptively simple arrangement but it works. Another song that is growing on me. There's something about the almost naked vocal performance that is endearing.

The Pannacotta Army: Honestly, your smoothness, which I love and admire about you, is working against you slightly on this song. And it is no fault of yours. The other songs seem to have a little rough around the edges feel that is cool and maybe a little vulnerable and here you are knocking the cool swagger out of the park. The lines "not from outer space/ not a basket case" is sung as a matter of fac rather than with the attitude I would have expected outside of this presentation. That being said, I like this song. It just doesn't fit into the playlist quite as well as the others. Also, keep doing this. I really do love smooth. coming in at around 3:00 but it definitely didn't feel that long.

Pigfarmer Jr: I think this arrangement is okay but could be better. I recorded the banjo and then forgot to mix in it until the last minute. And I wonder if the tempo is just a hair too slow. I wonder if it could keep the feeling in the vocal but still have a little more edge to it.

Votes definitely go to The Pannacotta Army and Joy Sitler but I didn't dislike anything in the fight. Still, it feels wrong to vote for everything.
