Hello, Fightsy-Friends!

Thank you for taking the time to listen to my submission this week. I apologize for being too quiet. I usually shoot for -13 and wasn't thinking. I also didn't have time to coordinate with my musical life-partner, Ujn Hunter, so (unfortunately) it's just me. Anyway, I wanted to test out a new Eurorack module I've developed that like, plays big chorus power chords. So that's what this is. Big hardware synthesizers. Mmmhmm.

BWxBW
1. This is musically (IMHO, no offense, you are all fantastic) the most interesting of the entries, in part just because it's so chaotically crazy and talent-rich. Y'all are just, amazing. I am stewing in a rich sauce of envy.
2. Oh, someone else said suburb!!!! +1!!
3. I think I've said this before, but one of my proudest musical moments was that one time I got to work with WreckdoM. Tears emoji.

Hoblit
<3 K-Pop hearts emoji!! This is particularly fun because it evokes a bunch of different punk eras. Like, there's some New York. There's some LA hardcore there. There's some third wave. It's like you put punk's greatest hits in a blender and this what came out. You are an expert musician, and it's fun to hear you synthesize all these influences into one coherent whole. I'm impressed.

King 9, et. al.
I think you created a new genre here. I would like to propose a name: "Big Hair Punk." This is amazing, and I'm clicking on your backlog to listen to teh rest. IDK if you're a regular I've missed or what, but well done, my friend. OH THAT BIG BREAKDOWN ENDING!!!!

Reve thank you for the reviews!

King 9 and the Blackwoods - I wondered how many actual punk songs this round would produce and this tune does not disappoint. Great guitar work, cocky punchy vox, pounding drums with all the right amount of cymbals. Short AF. This is really good.

Hoblit - I read reve's review and see what he means, I hear this from the perspective of an older punk giving advice to the youth of today, with a tour of punk musical styles. Is this sort of a tongue in cheek like, tell them don't do anything so they rebel and do the thing? or a poke at how former young punks grew up and now run things and have kind of benefitted from the way of the system and don't want any disruptions... Really good music and vox.

R. Mosquito - The music on this is stellar, opening synth, oscillation. Good commentary on conformity within nonconformity, I think that is the gist? I'm bad at making out lyrics, I am one who needs subtitles in my own language when I watch a movie. This song seems so much larger and fuller than its scant two minutes.

Brown Word and the Big Whine - I kind of wanted a punk song, but also not really, since it's from someone who was a punk but is now an old (guitar) wanker, with all sorts of advice. I was gonna do the previous week's fight, but missed it, but I'd seen some thing, 3 words you'd say to your past self, "It gets better". And it's not that it gets better, you, ideally, get better at dealing with whatever it is.

FIRST , Thank you for your listens! I appreciate everyone's participation and listens, thank you!

Brown Word and the Big Whine :

Young punk energy! I can appreciate the optional challenge being included as well. Distorted vocals are a nice touch and totally reminds me of thumbing through records and hearing the local bands blasting through the speakers. It's got that urban flare, never familiar, but always welcome. There's some Ramones'esque chord & rhythm choices which I also love. I like the wire'ry lead guitar that runs through the entire thing but it does get to be a bit-much at some point. But it definitely keeps the intensity of the song in tact.

EDIT: I wanted to note a couple of things about your lyrics. I definitely had issues with girlfriends' little brothers being tattle tales. I also hung out at the mall a lot and 'downtown' when I moved to the city. I couldn't tell you how many parks I've partied and even slept in. (My Drinking in the Dark touches on this a little, even.) So high-five on similar experiences!

I also want to note that your lyrics sort of remind me of Against Me!'s I Was A Teenage Anarchist in an off-hand way.

Hoblit :

I've got some production changes I'll be making before this goes to 'album'. I may even re-sing the verses after adding and subtracting some syllables to make all that fit better. I was definitely inspired and have already remixed what I have. Thank you for the listen and I'll reply to comments in another post.

King 9 and the Blackwoods :

Short & sweet and I really dig the in-your-face blasting guitars. This one also has some urban feel to it. Intense intro right into the "young punk!" hook. I like repetition in songs like this because it sticks and you sort of it living with you even when it's over. I absolutely love the intensity this brings and while it's too short, I love the big finish anyway. I'm voting for this one.

R. Mosquito:

It's like Depeche Mode making fun punk themes. Lyrics seem more intense than the music though. I've come a long way on bleepy-bloopy music over the years so I can hear that you put time into this and I appreciate the overall sound. I think you have a listenable song here and I appreciate your efforts even if this didn't strike me as one of the stronger pieces this week, if you assume the theme a bit. However, kudos to doing your own, unpredictable thing while the rest of us just turned up our guitars and mashed the strings! :)

I'm not an expert musician, but I am knowledgeable. :)

So the secret here is that I've been working on a punk rock album and in that, I've been doing my research. I've been immersing myself in all of the punk rock I've loved over the years and even sprinkling in some stuff that I'm not as familiar with. (Like The Offspring) On the 4th of July weekend, I had some business to take care of in Canada and I listened to nothing-but-punk for all three days I was traveling back and forth. I can't list all of the bands but I will note the variety among them. I listened to the old stuff like the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and both Deads! (Milkmen & Kennedys) But I also listened to NOFX, Social Distortion, and Rancid. A lot of Green Day (early & newer) and everything by Against Me!

So yeah, plenty of Orange County, some L.A. , some NYC (Even DC but this post could go looooong), and a dash of English. Thank you, I'm glad it's showing.

It's the idea of the album I'm working on to be an all-out-punk record representing my entire influentially soaked sleeve.

Thanks again for the listen and the kind words.

(Misfits, Adolescents, Black Flag, The Vandals, Blink 182, Bouncing Souls, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, Agnostic Front, The Clash ...and I still haven't mentioned everything!)

See above for style-explanations and thank you too for noticing.

Something else you noticed is also another part of my record-writing process right now.

Is this an older punk giving advice to youth today? Yeah, probably but it's definitely tongue & cheek. You're on to me.

We U.S. Americans are living in a precarious time that is devolving quickly, and at a pace that has become unpredictable. So the vague delivery is deliberate. If there is any hope of 'revolutionary punk' music to inspire any kind of rise-up, it certainly can't be obvious. If so, it may suffer from censorship, either by corporation or government. I want to reach through on a narrow path that can still keep things in debate, exploiting the wiggle room of two (or more!) possible realities. You know, like 'they' do.

I don't know how I forgot to reply to this, that is awesome! I went and listened (was before my time, I joined in 2010) and enjoyed There's A Mosquito In My WreckdoM :)
