I got in on 1and1.com's really sweet deal: When they first started, they offered 500MB of free space for three years to anyone who aplied within this certain time. Sort of a clientelle-building scheme.
Anyways, I know Starfinger uses them. I've never had bandwidth issues, the server is fast, and I've never seen any downtime in the year+ I've been using it.
The url they give you will be ugly, but they can hook you up with a pretty one for cheap cheap cheap. I bought http://www.thesoberirishman.com for like the next 6 years for like $18. Something like that.

I use Dreamhost now and like their support and administration stuff. They have occassional deals that are pretty sweet, and now they just TRIPLED my bandwidth, which is awesome! See if they work for you...I have the crazy domain package and got a special that works out to like $4 a month rather than the advertised $7.99.

Hey Happy DreamHost Customers!
Just in case you don't read the newsletter, here's one thing you missed:
For the month of December, all new shared hosting sign ups are getting
TRIPLE the normal bandwidth allotment on their plans.. forever!
That makes it:
Crazy Domain Insane: 120GB/month!
Sweet Dreams: 144GB/month!
Code Monster: 192GB/month!
Strictly Business: 264GB/month!
So now is as great a time as ever to refer people (and get $65 for it!).
And don't worry.. we aren't leaving out current customers. ALL current
shared hosting customers have been upgraded to those bandwidth levels
immediately and permanently as well.. happy days!
On the downside, we're discontinuing the policy we had for a few months
of dropping the highest day's bandwidth each month from our calculations.
It was just too complicated, and should be more or less moot now that
we've tripled all bandwidth limits anyway!
Happy Downloads!

just wanted to say that I delved into the world of database managment (sort of) with MySQL today to set up functionality for a php blog program called, ahem, Blog. AFter upgrading my account to have MySQL, I had to figure out how to set one (db)up. Now that's done, getting the blog stuff up to the right directories and figuring out how to make it tick is making my head hurt.
All you in-the-know peeps, I salute you. (I know, your probably saying..."here we go again, another armchair "webmaster"...)
So really, I mean it. Hats off! This stuff is NOT simple. At least not for me.
(My upgrade also came with the PowerTool of phpbb. I turned it on for the hell of it and got 'er fired up...felt very proud for about 3.5 minutes. Until I realized that I was the only on there..... )
just cuz you built it doesn't mean anyones gonna come.

I have questions about hosting and web stuff. I figure this is a good thread, if not, feel free to move it.
I was in the control panel for my webspace and noticed I had an unbelievably high number of unique page hits last month. This data is provided by Webalizer. Are unique page hits the thing that matters? I've searched on it, and it seems to mean a single IP address, counted once in a 24 hour period. Is that correct? Is it possible that my 'counter' is counting something else?
I want people to visit the site lots, but I have a hard time believing this many people did. Like 16500 unique page hits...
Hopefully someone can clarify this for me so I can get some perspective on these stats.
Thanks!

Unique page hits in Webalizer aren't very useful. They usually include images and all other Javascript files, CSS, etc, so a single click could generate dozens of hits if you have lots of images. This also probably includes bots that scan your page and crawl through everything you've got. Some bots are dumber than others and crawl the same content multiple times.TheHipCola wrote:I have questions about hosting and web stuff. I figure this is a good thread, if not, feel free to move it.

The "Visits" is the most useful to me. It measures how many times people visited your site. Let's say I went there and clicked around for a few pages in the morning, and then went back later that afternoon and played around for 15 minutes. That'd add two visits to the count. Bots also add visits, but only once per trip because their effect doesn't get overblown.

cheap webhosting dealz
GoDaddy, where I have registered my domain name, is offering some sweet deals for web-hosting now. $3.95/month, 10 MySQL d/b's, 5 GB space, 250GBs transfer b/w.
That's the best I've seen. And you can get a deal if you prepay a year or two.
FYI

It's worth looking at the reputation of the hosting company. Some are offering really good deals in terms of space and bandwidth for price along with extras like databases and blogs. But you may find that their uptime is pretty low, below 80%, or their support is not very good. (I'm not refering to the ones listed above as I don't know them.) Their servers may just die after a few months and you have to find another host. I'd say it's worth paying a bit more for a more reputable and relible host that provides good customer service with uptimes in the high nineties rather than go for a cheaper alternative. I have friends who got some really good deals go sour after a few months, so worth checking it out.
so . . . when was the last time you backed up?

I've gone with Doteasy for a couple years. I registered my domain(s) with them for $25/yr., and they host them for free.
I get about 100mb of storage, and 1GB/month traffic allowance. Sufficient for my modest efforts.
