Better than it had any right to be. Steve Zahn is hilarious, the whole thing is really well written, they take no shortcuts, and a few of the characters actually have more than one side to them.
I give it a solid A. Lots of fun.

Can't wait to see this - Clive Cussler is a real guilty pleasure of mine. I listened to Sahara on cassette (all 36 cassettes of it) a few years ago while I was out driving to mine sites in western Qld. The voices they used on the tape were hilarious. I want to be Dirk Pitt. He is my hero (actually, I'd really like to be a sort of Dirk Pitt/Steve Irwin amalgum)
edit:
36 cassettes? That can't be right. Maybe it was 36 sides. Whatever - it went for a bloody long time.

If he does I didn't notice. I tried reading the novel for this, but it was so poorly written I only got through about 50 pages. The movie is a whole lot better, although from what I read of the plot of the novel, the movie removes a bunch of stuff. Not that I cared.
The movie is also much less concerned with impressing the viewer with Dirk Pitt's abilities than the novel seemed to be (from what little I read of it before literally throwing it across the room in disgust). He just is, and we get to figure it out for ourselves. Hope they make another movie with the same creative types involved. This was as good, but in a more lighthearted vein, as The Bourne Identity.

The reason I asked is that in every Clive Cussler book, there is some point in the story where there's this crusty old mechanic, or bartender, or diplomat who gives Dirk Pitt an unexpected assist, or loans him a car, or something, and his name always turns out to be Clive Cussler. The coolest thing is when, even though you know it's coming, he manages to sneak it past the reader and surprises you. It's part of the guilty pleasure.
So I'll be disappointed if he doesn't manage to sneak in a cameo like that in the movie...
