Some screen shots - Live, Digital Performer, Logic

Post by the Jazz »

I just thought I'd post these screen shots of a few program interfaces in case anyone's curious or interested and hasn't used them. Or if they have and are bored. There's a lot of talk about this program or that program, and all their abilities and whatnot, sometimes it's nice to be able to have a visual to look at. Be warned, they may not fit in your browser window. But I compressed them to jpeg so the files aren't huge.

Digital Performer v4.12 for the Mac, made by Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU). Good view of the waveform editor, you can see some channel strips in the mixer window, and underneath is some of the sequence editor and arrange window. Transport of course at the top. One of the things I like about DP is that all the track inputs and outputs are listed to the left in the arrange window, you can see two of them in the shot - the Conductor track and a stereo audio track.

Live 3 for the Mac (I think it's 3), made by Ableton. This is an interesting program which was made for the purpose of creating real-time remixes, mashups, whatever-you-wants from your computer. The frame on the left is where you browse samples and effects, and the frame on the bottom is where you can do some editing of the clips and effects. Each mark on the waveform there can be clicked and dragged to warp the clip. Fun to play with. In the middle we can see audio channels (columns) where you drag your clips to arrange different instances; then you go over to the right and click the "play" symbol on any row of clips to go to different sections in your arrangement. Fairly simple concept, but there's a lot that can be done if you know more about the program, which I don't because I'm not really interested in remixing.

And finally, the Logic interface, which I'm sure many people are more familiar with than I. For those who are not, observe the handy channel strip to the left, and the boxes on the channel strips which give you a visual summary of the track's EQ. Is that not sweet? And so many symbols that I have no idea what they mean, but I assume there is sweetness there as well. The thing that annoys me the most is how many of the windows in Logic have that Edit - Tracks - View - Etc. menu bar in addition to the general one across the top of the screen, and you have to hunt through them if you want to do something and don't know where the developers put that particular option.
Let cake eat them.

Starfinger uses Live for just about everything, I think. e.g. Brainpipe's "Chainsaw" was made completely in Live so it's not just for remixing :)

In the same vein, Acid 4.0 for the PC. This is a screenshot of Dollar Bill & the Inkpoints' "Chaos vs. Order." Each looped/unlooped sound file has its own row in the diagram and time flows from left to right. The file browser/master mixer pane pulls up from the bottom when needed (not much).

Oh, right, I didn't mean to say that all you can do in Live is remix, but that's what makes it anything special. If you're not going to do some remixing you're probably better off with a more standard sequencer/recorder program.

I'll add a screenshot to the list: Tracktion

That's a screenshot of this song (work in progress).

My program of choice. I love the single window interface. You drag and drop your instruments and effects (called "filters", for some reason) directly onto the channel they apply to (or the master, in the lower right). Same goes for the input on the left.

One of my favorite things you can do with Tracktion is the Rack, which allows you to arrange your instruments and effects modularly. It ends up making this quite the powerful little program. Tracktion 2 just came out, but I haven't gotten it yet.

I love the single window thing. ** envy **
I missed the free offer in December. Anybody have an install app?

I think I do (that's how I got it), but it wouldn't make any difference because you still have to register the free copy with Mackie to unlock it. And mine's registered to me, so it wouldn't work for you.

Great thread. I'm in a long drawn-out transition from my Mac Performer setup to something light 'n cheap for my PC laptop.

Does anyone have experience with N-Track? It's the cheapest midi/audio app I've been able to find. I'm curious if it's a total p.o.s. For $50, it may not matter..? If it truly sux, I'd rather save my pennies for Tracktion.

I'm really bent out of shape that I missed that Tracktion offer. I've been fiddling with the demo, and it's really nice...especially considering it's only $100.

BTW, I still have my old (full) copy of DP 2.73. It won't work on OSX, but if someone wants it, they may be able to get a new copy of ver 4 for the upgrade cost. I have the manuals, and CDs for the app, plus core system drivers for the PCI 324 card and USB midi interfaces. PM me if you're innerested...

Over at Remixfight I posted this screen capture:

Audiomulch - JBB's Systematic Panic HInc remix

Audiomulch is a different sort of program - it's well-suited to strange organic mixes/sound creation, and less song-oriented. You can make songs from it, though. The pane on the left is the patch window, where you can see how the signal flows through the setup. The right pane is where the contraptions/VSTs are controlled. The bottom pane is the automation window, which can be used to control the contraptions in the time domain.

I know Jute Gyte uses it (I think on my recommendation!), and you can hear sounds from it on various NIN releases amongst many others.

Nice thing - audiomulch is free for a full-featured program, shareware for $50. Support on the mailing list is excellent.

Renoise is my personal software of choice, available from http://www.renoise.com. It one of the few trackers that sport full VST Instrument and Plugin support. The single window user interface takes some getting used to, but after you have used it for a while you will discover that it is the fastest way to do anything with audio. It's available for like, $63 USD back when I got it a couple years ago at version 1.2. It's super cheap, and if you buy it once, all future versons are free.

Here is my current work in progress, made in Renoise.
I'm back.

Oh man, I just did my first project in my new copy of Tracktion. I am soooo pleased with my purchase! It's totally worth the buck-fifty. It's my first run with a single-screen interface, and using a guitar. I've never worked so fast and had no conflicts or problems. Worked perfectly with the Reason rewire running in the background.
