i just realized i suck

Post by Koushirou »

i suck at guitar, piano, songwriting, singing, and music in general. nothing i write is worth listening to. i'm no better than the high school scene kid bands i despise. i'm worse. i'm wasting ridiculous amounts of time and money on a hopeless HOBBY. the worst part of it all is that it's the one thing i'm MOST talented in. so basically this means i have nothing to live for anymore.

that is all.

If you keep going you'll get better. If it's something you feel passionately for, then just keep doing it. If recording a song and making up lyrics and chords and melodies and all that jazz makes you smile, it's a good thing. Too much is based on money and time. Just chill out and make music if you love it.

who cares if you're good? you said it was a hobby right? just go with it, when it sucks, throw it away, and keep going. don't put the pressure on yourself of whether you're better than anybody else. music isn't a competition (err...uh, well on here it KINDA is). but either way true musicians only compete with themselves. and anyway, very few people like their own music more than other peoples (i hate mine usually). you're always going to be you're own worst critic, so just stick in there and have fun.

Now...either you're deadly serious...or you have a wicked sense of humour.

If it's thefirst one...then quite dwelling in your ego... and start practicing...taking lessons, writing more. No one's music is worthless. Not everyone will relate, or like it, but so fucking what. Also, dude, when you know you suck at something, it usuallly means a big turn around is very close, if you're willing to do what it takes to get there. What really sucks is people who get lost in their minor accomplishments and stop trying. or worse, lord it over all as if their skill was a weapon. The only part that is hopeless is the concept of "winning" the musical lottery of fame and fortune. If that was your goal, you don't suck at music, you suck at business.

BAsically, if you're gonna leave psuedo-suicidal messages on the boards, thenI feel that a) you need to get over it and rise up or b) now I want to listen to your music to see what the hell your talking about since I haven't heard you yet to my knowledge anwyay and hey! Maybe you don't suck at business after all, cause now I want to listen...

I usually like my own music a lot until I listen to it with someone else around. Then I realise how sillly most of my songs are. :)

ha! :)

I played a CD of my stuff at a dinner party the other night - nobody said it sucked - but I could tell everyone would prefer to ignore my adolescent obsessions and talk about adult stuff like mortgages and golf and expensive wine and shit.

(oh...except for Caravan Leaf's "Gallows Hill" - everyone loves that one - and are spun out by the fact that the drums are being played by some Canadian bloke I've never actually met!)

That's great son, you've identified the problem. Now step 2 is doing something about it.

Unfortunately for you, no it's not. You're about to embark on a lifelong quest that will seem hopeless at times like now. You'll be in search of anything and every thing you can get your hands on to make your music better. You'll spend countless hours tearing apart the mixes of the stuff you strive to do and the stuff you're currently doing. You'll hang out at music stores bugging the crap out of guys with questions you need the answers to. You'll practice your ass off, alone and solitary. You'll hook up with any musician willing to spend 5 minutes with you for a jam session or just to talk music. You'll go to open mic night on Wednesday and give your talent away for free just for the practice or in the hope you'll play with folks that might teach you something. You'll do all this because just when the light seems the dimmest, one little ray of hope will poke through and keep you going.

No.....wait, that's me. I'm not quite sure what you'll do.
