Cocktails

Post by Bell Green »

There's probably a thread about this somewhere, but I can't find it. I've been recently discovering cocktails. I was having my afternoon nap the other day and woke up thinking about cocktails for some reason. So I went along to Sainsburys and got some Vermouth. Then my wife bought me a really nice cocktail glass. So I've become a big martini fan trying out various ratios of gin to vermouth. I've tried the "dirty" martini as well, adding some of the olive water. Very nice.

Any other cocktail fans out there, probably more experienced than me and with some good tips.
so . . . when was the last time you backed up?

I pretty much stick to gin martinis, very dry, and sometimes dirty. I'm not a big gin snob, although Bombay has done well by me. I didn't start these until after college, and never knew it was flavored by juniper berries. I spent much of my childhood crawling about the juniper trees in our yard, loving the smell. Go figure.

A nice varient is ginger infused gin. They go together very well.

On a hot day, I like to sit in the shade with a glass of spiced rum (Sailro Jerry's) and some orange/pineapple juice. Lots of ice.

I like mocktails: non-alcoholic concoctions. I sometimes even buy alcohol mixers and then combine it with soda.

Some of my favorites (I use diet versions of sodas, but regular versions work too):
Cherry Creme Cola: 1 part cherry-based Sobe beverage, 9 parts vanilla version of coke or pepsi
Donnie Darko: 1 part Nantucket Nectars blackberry soda, 5 parts cola
Bubbly Atlantis: 1 part blue raspberry mixer, 7 parts 7up, sprite, or sierra mist
Dark Atlantis: 1 part Blue raspberry mixer, 7 parts coke or pepsi
Electric Drill (cf. screwdriver): 1 part orange soda, 2 parts Red Bull

and of course, the Virgin Suicide: 1 part each drink available on a given soda fountain, even the non-carbonated ones

At work I'll grab the sweetened raspberry juice concentratre (for frozen smoothie drinks) and add it to my coke, water, lemonade, etc... (it's best in the lemonade)

I remember one time I mixed some rasberry schnops (is that how you spell it?) with some pepsi blue. God did that taste bad. Even cold it probably would have been horrible.

All those mocktails seem to be like, "drip something into some soda". No shaking, only two ingredients, no olives, no onions, no limes, no ice cream, no cream. COME ON NOW GET REAL WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO TO US.

I always wanted to make a cocktail that was equal parts v8 juice and rubbing alchohol. I don't know what I'd call it though. The Late, Great Ray Charles?

Hendrick's Gin & Tonic with a slice of cucumber. Delicious. Even better when it's a double. :D

Hey, I'm in college; I work with what I've got. But if you want to shake something with a soda base, feel free to do so... just not over my carpet or computer.

Shirley Manson: 1 part merlot, 1 part vanilla ice cream, whip gently (long spoon?) and top with a cherry (optional).

My roommate came up with it a few weeks ago and said it was delicious. I came up with the name, so blame me if you think it sucks.

Liquid (Orange or Lemon) Tobler: 4 parts vanilla ice cream, 2 parts lemonade or orange drink (NOT orange juice), 1 part hot fudge. Shake if possible; otherwise mix with spoon.

Somebody should come up with a cocktail called the "Nipple Slip".

Some Rabid mixes:

Shot of Glenlivet, a few ice cubes, fill rest of tumbler with Canada Dry ginger ale.

"Hoto Magnifico" (Magnificent Whore)-pint glass, ice, half ouzo, half rootbeer. Though if you find yourself at my preferred bar, you can just ask for a "Patrick", heh...

...and staring at the bottles on said bar's wall recently, wondered what equal parts Midori and Southern Comfort would taste like. To be named, naturally, "Oh My God". If it doesn't half suck.

"Nipple Slip" and "Slippery Nipple" are two entirely different things.

A nipple slip should involve a cherry or other red object becoming visible just when you tip the glass up to drink. Perhaps prior to drinking it, the object would float against the top of the surface layer, visible but still covered.

There could be variations on it too! Like the ordinary every day nipple slip could be modified to the Red Carpet Nipple Slip, and the Superbowl Nipple Slip.

stiletto-esque
1 shot jameson's whiskey
1 shot disaronno amaretto
1 shot rose's lime

it originally called for two shots of whiskey, but that's a bit too much. so i made it in thirds instead. drinking one now. wow, long day.
