NYC Song Fight concert?

NYC Song Fight concert?

Post by Jordan »

Has there ever been an NYC Song Fight concert? Are there enough fighters around here to do one?

I could probably find us a place to do it -- if nothing else, then the Charleston in Williamsburg.

Interested? Comments?

Fluffy and I played in Brooklyn a few times last year. He's not here anymore, but I am. Williamsburg would be great.

NYC is a possibility; Michelle's cousin lives there and she'd like to visit sometime. Just not real soon... busy times right now.

Though I've left NY for NJ, I'd still be down for doing a SF show. Plus I owe Roymond one for the amount of times we could've met up but didn't. All this wasted proximity.

So this should happen. I'm here in NYC now and I hate it here, so this would be a really cool thing to do. I've been dyin' to play some live music.

I just spent 2 days in NYC, and I could happily spend another few there in a few months time. So who wants to take it upon themselves to find somewhere to play? :P

So who'd be willing to set up a venue for this thing? I'm guessing that November - Februaryish would be kinda bad what with bad weather, but eh, whatever works for most is good.

I've been known to be generally inept at such things in the past. No reason to hold me back from claiming some shred of responsibility. One angle I have been interested in is simply joining an ongoing songwriters' showcase somewhere. But I haven't found any :(

I'm pretty confident that I could get us a night at The Charleston in Williamsburg, Bklyn. The drawback is that the sound sucks there.

How has it been done elsewhere? Everyone does three songs, or half an hour or something?

For Boston each person got 15-30 minutes or so, depending on when they were on/what they were playing/if they needed to set up/if they even had enough songs to fill up the time. I believe in the past they did songs fight-by-fight, but that was 'back in the day'.

Say 8 people want to play, there's a venue for a Friday night, everyone gets together Friday afternoon, then first person goes on at 8, then everyone gets 20 minutes, everyone's done by 10:40, give or take however much time.

How does the sound suck? Bad room or bad gear?

Bad gear. The worst of it is that one of the PA speakers is blown. Other than that, only the vocals go through the PA, the mixer is behind the band and there are no stage monitors. The blown speaker is what really wrecks it, though.

My band is pretty new and we've only played 3 different venues so far. I'm hoping that with some repeat performances, I will have established a relationship somewhere semi-decent and can pitch the idea to them. I figure it would actually be a pretty good weeknight gig for them. It would be more bands than usual, so more friends of bands and, hence, more cash over the bar.
