Mixing Class
Mixing Class
Erik was all "GOD I'M NO GOOD AT EXPERIMENTING PLEASE SHOW ME MATH" so maybe we should do that.
Let's figure out a song to fuck with and go instrument by instrument and step by step to illustrate the path from fuckiness to listenability using common tools and shit that everyone can do.
I can't host a tune, but I'll be happy to do some steps.
Erik (or anyone with B-grade recordings), got a song you want mixed? And, who can host the sources?

This is a great idea.
I was thinking about rerecording some vocals and remixing Gin or Ginseng for the cover fight with some new software and monitors.
I would be happy to offer it up as an example of how not to produce something. J and JD have agreed to record the vocals to remove the poofs since we now have a pop screen as well.
Or if you already have a song I will happy to sit back and take notes, thanks.

haha, no offense, but this is perfect. can you dump each track _unaffected_ and lined up, then pm JB and he'll maybe give you info for ftp'ing them somewhere.Freddielove wrote:This is a great idea.

so no reverb or anything on the tracks.
your mix is good levelwise, but there's probably some stuff we can do to get some life into it.

I would be glad to donate source material in the 8-10 track range... "Me The Merciless" or "Brand New Car" I could provide right away as hi quality .mp3 files. You'd get to have a whole session on how to make premixed MIDI drums fit into the mix... I also have a cover of Josh Woodward's "Hey Ruth" that is sitting around waiting to be properly mixed... and a whole bunch of non-songfight stuff, too...
I also have a set of source files for a song that got all out of sync when I recorded the drum machine and rhythm guitar part for a different song over the drum machine part for that song... since it was a drum machine and digital recording, I re recorded the correct drums and guitar on the track, but in the process of trying to get everything sync'd back up, two or three of the other tracks are now out of whack... the lyrics are kinda churchy, but if ya wanted to show how to put something like that back together, I could donate those, as well...

None taken, that's why I offered it. Never had the illusion that I knew what I was doing anyway so this is great. Cool, I will dump the tracks tonight. The bass and drum tracks are, of course, midi so if you find that it is more instructive for people to add real bass and or drums feel free, or it that would take too much time out of your schedule, not.
Thanks for doing this, a suck to nonsuck tutorial is precisely what this place needs.

so right after i posted this i had a major comp crash and lost all my crap. i am now, however, recovered, so this is back on track. i'll try to get some starter stuff out this weekend.
what is anyone's opinion on what software to use? is there a free or demo version of something that has group tracks?
i am using nuendo 2 right now. it's very flexible but also very interface-heavy.
