Video games, etc.
Have at it, Fluffy.
I just bought Tony Hawk's Underground 2. This is the first time since Quest 64 that I've bought a game without playing it first. Also, the first time I've bought a game on it's release date since Quest 64.
Anyways. I was expecting a slew of product-placement, lame jokes featuring Bam Margera's hilarious Jackassery, and horrible music. The first two are present. You recieve text messages from teammates on a Motorola phone. Napster posters and other crap can be found everywhere. Bam Margera can be seen shooting people with potatoe guns, har har.
I was, however very pleasantly surprised with the music. When I put the game in, I actually turned to my roommate and said "God, the music is gonna be a bunch of crap with like one Ramones song thrown in to appease the old-school crowd", not two seconds after I finished saying that, Rock 'n Roll High School started playing....
Beyond that, I was delighted to hear The Casualties, The Distillers, Frank fucking Sinatra, and some actually decent hiphop (not that MuskaBeatz bullshit). I haven't looked to see what all music is available, but I'm impressed with the developers' dangerous marketing decision to use good music.
As far as gameplay, it's a lot like all the other games. They've added little things, etc. Nothing too big. One thing I'm really excited about is the ability to turn out of low grinds. Since THPS2, if you held the rotate button down as you exited a low grind, you'd turn about 90 degrees and you'd fall. They have finally fixed this to where you can turn out of a grind and ride away, providing a more realistic play experience for people who like to play as if they're really skating.
The game is pretty easy. I had no trouble getting every goal in the first two stages. The goal descriptions are generally very helpful if the goal title isn't.
Anyways, these are my thoughts after a couple hours of playing. I haven't checked out any of the other features they're boasting about - level creator, character creator, tag editor, etc.
My roommate has a PS2 network adapter at his house, which he plans on bringing over soon. Any SF'ers up for a game of SKATE?

I'm pretty excited about this game, mostly because when it goes gold it means I can finally get some fucking sleep.

That's actually the kind of stuff I loathe to see in these games. The developers worry about "how many hats are available in custom skater mode" before they adress "how shitty the shifties look."j$ wrote:I like the idea of playing as Ben Franklin ....

Granted, the average player doesn't care how realistic the gameplay is, but damnit, it's still important. They've been tip-toe-ing in the right direction, but they've got a long-ass way to go.

I think that's because it's a lot easier to make more hats than it is to make the shifties look better.

[Sober] uses [Fenix Down] on [Videogame thread]
Medal of Honor: Europpean Assault is fucking awesome. I'm generally averse to shooters on console, as I'm a slave to the mouse, but I'm addicted to anything WWII, it seems. I actually found this game reasonably easy to pick up after not touching a console shooter since... uh... Halo I?
The squad controlling aspect is pretty good, the soundtrack is great as usual, and the missions are pretty fun. The cutscenes are delightful.
I can't get enough of the History Channel, and this game is that channel, in game form - channelled, if you will, into a game.

on the computer game front, i just can't get enough of half-life 2, even though i've beaten it a few times, but it's gotta share time with my new game, guild wars... online mmorpg! great graphics, good gameplay, interesting story. nice.

Just grab a cheap ps1 and a ps version of soul reaver. It is alot better. But unless your really into the series skip soul reaver 2. That game blows ass. Where Legacy of Kain:Deception was one of the coolest ps2 games Ive ever played.fluffy wrote:I finally got Soul Reaver for Dreamcast.
God those are horrible controls. Plus, I have a feeling they ported the (fixed-point) 3D engine directly over to the Dreamcast, based on how jittery the graphics are. Which makes me motion-sick.
Bleh.
Almost makes me want to plug in my ps2. But Ive got my gaming filled up with Diablo II at the moment. A PC classic for sure. Ive owned it for 4 years now, and while you might stop playing. You always come back.

Recently played a game called RibbitKing. Basically it's golf with frogs and a very interactive golf course. Really really fun.

Yeah, I can vouch for that. Replayability on that game is great. The expansion was a lot of good ideas, too.NeilThrun wrote:But Ive got my gaming filled up with Diablo II at the moment. A PC classic for sure. Ive owned it for 4 years now, and while you might stop playing. You always come back.

Quick points on this thread:
- Quest 64 is far and away the worst RPG ever made.
- Halo: overrated.
- Tony Hawk games need to stop doing crazy shit for novelty and make skateboarding games fun again.
For me, steady doses of Battlefield 2, Smash Bros. Melee, Day of Defeat, Unreal Tournament 2004, and whatever good wrestling game I can get my hands on. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2006 coming soon, hooray.
We should have a Songfight LAN.

Trust me. Its worth it. The game gets alot more intense in the higher difficulties.jimtyrrell wrote:Funny, I dug out Diablo II a couple months ago and ran through it again. You're absolutely right, it's very replayable.
Never got the expansion, because something about it still being 20 bucks doesn't sit right with me. Seems like a lot for an expansion to a dated (if still good) game.
