Recording Software

Garage Band won't let you import an external MIDI file, although there are apparently some freeware / shareware things bouncing around that will let you do it indirectly... missingmanuals.com supposedly has a "Missing CD" page where there is a "Dent du MIDI" program that lets you do it by creating fakeout .aif files that you CAN drag into GB, and then GB realizes it's MIDI data and treats it as such... or so the book sez...

How about a 4th - Latency. I just installed Protools LE w/mbox on my 1.7 GHz 1GB RAM pentium M running XP pro. You have to listen to tracks thru the Mbox while recording. and it causes a sucky sucky delay. I never had this problem with my standalone 12track DAW or the ancient version of GTR tracks i played with. Yeah I know (HW buffers)-- and shutdown every thing else and dedicate a drive, but GEEEZ what a pain!

i posted this under latency issues, it usually clears up the problem (within reason...if you have a few reverbs and softsynths, you're fucked) it works for most sequencers, including my version of pro tools:

cpu aside, try allocating less memory to the recording software you use (or a smaller playback buffer in the preferences). most sequencers actually use very little memory (outside of plugins), and the computer itself deals with the task of replaying audio.
