Or any bass line from that album actually...especially if you include solos.

Personally, I think 'Please do not go' has one of the catchiest bass lines. ever.

wow, didn't realize there were any PIL fans here.

I once mentioned PIL and John Lydon style vocals in a review of ADD...and I got what...I still can't necessarily discern as sarcasm or not.

Really? The first two albums are fantastic - and considering where Lydon had come from to start the band, truly punk rock in attitude as well. I rate them big time and Jah Wobble is one of my all-time bass heroes

The basslines in Dissecting Table's "Least Mean Square Algorithm for Personality Alteration" are awesome.

simon gallup is a god.

i really need to give props to carlos d. from interpol for creating some great basslines that not only work well in their own right, but completely serve the song. props, laddie.

and, naturally, you've gotta love peter hook.

I rock more than any of those pansies :)

Seeing Mog bigging up Flea, who is a good bass player, made me finalise this list

"In the Beginning ... there was rhydm!"
12 Best Bass Players of All Time

1. Jah Wobble (P.I.L. and solo)
2. Bootsy Collins (James Brown Band and P-Funk Collective)
3. Tessa Pollitt (the Slits)
4. Jack Bruce (Cream)
5. Paul Simonon (The Clash)
6. Noel Redding (The Jimi Hendrix Experience)
7. Peter Hook (Joy Division / New Order)
8. Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report)
9. Jean Jaques Burnel (The Stranglers)
10. Klaudia Schifferle (Kleenex / Lilliput)
11. Mani (Stone Roses / Primal Scream)
12. Gina Birch (The Raincoats)

Personal taste obviously - based on the ability to play it up and play it down as required, and linking rhythm and melody. Also, people who are bass players, not just wannabe guitarists filling in (step right up, Sir Paul MacCartney!)

Ha, I love The Joy Division but never considered any of them good musicians individually. To me, they've always been a collective that was able to sell a mood very successfully. Interesting.
