Don't have any experience with the Roland sets, but I can surely vouch for the <A href="http://www.hartdynamics.com/products/dr ... html">Hart Dynamics</A> kits. Mine is the Gigapro model, with a china crash and multipad added. They have a great look and feel, and they're generally cheaper than the corresponding Roland sets. As such, they're a bit less feature-rich (no edge triggering on the cymbals, for example), but for what you save I think it's worth it.

For modules, however, go with Roland all the way. Start with the TD-6V and work your way up if you can swing the expense. I have the TD-8 and I love it. If you wanna REALLY splurge, look at the TD-12, or the queen mother of drum modules: <angelic choir: AAAAAAAAHH> the TD-20.

If you buy a kit, you usually save additional $$$ by buying a set and a module together in one package. <A href="http://www.rmcaudio.com/">RMC Audio</A> (formerly RiksMusic) will cut you the best deal. Period.

First of all, Thanks so much for the Review. Going in to this week, I personally felt this was my best effort I had done here at Songfight, and then reviews up until you basically ripped my man hood to shreds and left me whimpering in the cold (maybe a bit overly dramatic, but hey) So thanks.

I would do louder percussion if i wasn't so ashamed of my keyboard drum sound. I used to use my bro's drum set and it sounded a lot better, but when he moved out I was left drumless and now I am saving up for one. But I agree.,

I wish I could find a band! But everyone here in the San Francisco Bay Area are either hip-hop enthusiasts, or metal heads. And the remaining that arent are all into indie stuff that I just dont do. But it would be awesome!

Have you tried posting fliers in the theatre and music building at SF State? Lot's of music peeps eager to form bands.

No i havent tried that, and i might, but the only problem would be I dont exactly live in San Francisco, im about 45 minutes out of it(with usual traffic or BART) and that would be hard to keep a band going with that kind of distance. I will definetely look into it though, Thanks for the suggestion!!

Thornberry The keyboard patch is horrible! This is a potentially really great song with a lot of ambition in its execution, but the instrumentation seems a bit disjoint and not meshing together until it gets to the chorus and then into the cool soloing. It does almost justify its six minute length, just needs to be tighter (And change the keyboard sound!).

Primitive Screwheads Out of time guitar makes this difficult to listen to.

Pink Pope Is this a good song or am I just being seduced by the lovely vocals. Generally well recorded, although the rest of the instruments feel a bit distant in the mix. It needs a bass line to boost the bottom end, and stop it sounding a bit thin.

Jordan Marshall If you're going to do just a vocal and guitar song you need to vary the strumming rhythm to keep it interesting, the emphasis here always seems to be on the same beat. Nice vocal though.

JoP Well, okay, minimalist but cool.

Dos Enimigos Love the vocals and the guitars are great too although they’re a bit too loud in the mix. This is an early contender for my vote.

XL MotherFscker Every SongFight seems to have at least one of these types of songs. Hopefully this seems to be the only one this time round….

Ashok and The Squid …..No its not. Does any one remember Throbbing Gristle here? Sorry couldn’t face the full 8 minutes of this. I fast forwarded to half way through, caught the interesting melange of sounds around 5 minutes, and then had to forward to the end.

Pegor What’s with the one guitar sounding like it's a coming from the back of the room and the other right up to the mike? This drags along at a pace that would make a snail get impatient.

PigPEN Rap again. Sorry, I find it hard to review and judge this type of music.

Melvin A really good catchy pop song partly ruined by a poor keyboard sound. There should also be a break from the relentless hand clap rhythm.

Ill Cricket Crew Drum loop, bass and keyboard sounds all sound professional, but there’s not enough here to convert the non rap fan.

East Bay Acolytes Having said that I’m not into rap, I take it all back, as this is way too catchy to ignore. Aghh! Whats with the abrupt end.

No Way and the Joses Well produced, sung and played, a solid, tight band, but it leaves me absolutely cold.

Ros Durand Its good, but not your best work. Nice acoustic playing, though the electric playing doesn’t work as well for me.

Star Crossed Voyager The vocoder style vocals and om-pa-pa rhythm just make it impossible for me to judge this seriously.

Andy Balham I like this, even if it is apparently half directed at me. Strong rhythm all the way through and the melody starts to grow on me with each listen. Well sung, not at all pitchy. Still don’t know about the solo though :)

Motor Monkeys (us) Our attempt at a slower country feel. As usual, good vox, not very good lyrics (I hate writing lyrics!!!)

Andy: The vocal delivery is so stilted that it sounds like you're reading the lyrics. Not only is the chorus not memorable or hooky, but it's actively challenging. Bass sounds.. wait for it.. out of tune. Simplify! Sing like you're having fun! Write lyrics for the listener! Repeat things!

Ashok: This is freakin' awesome. Industrial folk is horribly underrepresented in the world - this sounds like the Violent Femmes were interred in The Joker's factory dungeon for six years. Almost certain vote.

Dos Eminemos: Lots of good sounds forming a not-compelling piece of music. Points or not for the name-dropping? I can't decide, but it's the best line of the song.

EastBay: Dull, dull, dull. Jazz? Jazz influence? Whatever. Hoo-rah, vocoder.

illcrix: No part of this interested me, except for the occasional funky stretch vocal. I would have enjoyed this more with the drums and bass waaay back in the mix - it sounds like you're going for a lounge vibe, but most of the mix is dominated by that awfully-pitched bass drum. Back them the crap off. The constant feel juxtapositions evoke bad 80's radio pop.

JoP: well, points for trying.

Jordan Marshall: It is the Earnest Coffeeshop Guy Song, complete with overdriven tiny guitar mic and awful, awful, awful cliche lyrics. This is the music they play in hell.

Melvin: Points for sevenths. Points for puking. Points for singing like you mean it. ARE YOU LISTENING, ANDY BALLHAM? This is cute. Very good song.

Motomonkeys: Not at all my thing, but the gothy vocal delivery is good. Hippie background guitar licks are an instant turnoff to everyone who doesn't miss the Grateful Dead. Just, you know, in case you didn't know that already. I love the bass and the moody prechorus chord changes. Well-formed song all around. 128 ABR sounds just as good as 160 fixed, btw.

NowayJose: Could be a deodorant commercial.

PEGOR: Gotta respect a man who starts his song with 10 seconds of silence. Try again when you're sober.

Pigpen: No. One. Fucking. Cares.

Pink Pope: It is the "Game Without Frontiers" triangle sample! You sound exactly like the singer from the Enemies song. B-grade bar-band music.

Primal Headscrews: Cute. You need a new drummer.

Rossco D: Points for waltzing, but this just isn't working very well. Part of it is the spread distorted guitar. You gotta put some meat into a tone like that for it to have effect. Instead of visceral, the sung choruses just end up sloppy. Great idea lyrically, but the music detracts from it.

StarcrossedBOINGBOINGBOING: Yep, got some loops and a vocoder. Might as well turn it in to songfight.

Thornberry: Layers and layers of string cheese! I AM MELTING. WAIT! HERE COMES THE GRATEFUL DEAD GUITAR PART. 70's prog-emo? I dunno.

XL: Well, I was gonna call you another songfight craprapper, but.. I kinda like it. All hail the Ween.

This song froze me poor old computer, and also corrupted the .cpr file, so I couldn't open it again. I think one of the plug-ins was doing it. sigh. probably the mda piano, now that I think of it. well, it is free.

Now now kind sir, you mustn't concentrate on the bad samplings. Imagine how hard it is for me! I Conceptualized this song with a full symphony in mind, as grand as you can imagine! And then i am stuck with that:( But its all i have right now and I figured we could all just use our imagination:)

This fight is quite large, due in part to its largeness, and being wrapped up in this week's production, I haven't had much time to sit, listen and write. I have listened to every second of these songs at least twice now, and this'll be my third, here goes:

Ill cricket crew:
great sample, and funk style. Country funk? Harmonica stylin' on the chorus, very nice. A well produced song, i like it. Quite Ill.

Melvin:
Sweet tune, real easy. I like the hand clappin beat. Vocals sound good, well produced.

EBA:
That rap just flows and flows. I would have liked to have wrote a little more, and then had the time to go back and edit some parts. I keep listening though, and it sure sounds good. I really like this beat. Apparently, Nick's comp crashed and he couldn't finish it.

Ross Durand:
theres a fine line between good lyricism and a gimmick. You hit the right side, nicely written and nicely performed.

Ashok and the squid:
I listened to this all the way through... this time, I'm not going to. I didn't get it, and I won't, it may be musical genius, who knows.

Andy Balham:
Easy listenin' the drum line tugs at my soul but is too subdued to grab it. I like beats, but the song is well written.

Primitive screwheads:
Intro hooks me... sparse lyrical styling, fit in around some nice guitar work.

Jordan Marshall:
Did the people with real ears make comments on the vocals? I can't produce music, but I can tell that mix is off a lil. Other than that the vocal styling and music are paired nicely. The words I say to you are true.

JoP:
I hurt my ears, and not in a good way. This song must have been fun to make, but a balance could have let me enjoy it too.

Thornberry:
This is a big song, big sound and a nice arrangement. I think the beginning misfired, if the first 1:30 was dropped, it would be smoov.

Star Crossed Voyager:
I can't make out a word.

XLmotherfscker:
Not sure I could make out any of these words either.

Pink Pope:
Nice and light. Good song, well written lyrics. With the effects, everything sure sounds nice, but the singer doesn't get the emotion across to me.

Pegor:
well put together, but i miss the beat, with nothing else to keep the pace, i get anxious just hearing that guitar go on.

PiGPEN:
you can't be serious. about anything obviously. it sounds like you are battling someone? but, theres noone there. I like the rap, the beat, the hook, I'd like to hear something on different subject matter.

Motor Monkeys:
I like this groove, someone said it was walking a line... at points it does sound corny, and the singer hesitates. Where that hesitation isn't present, the delivery fits well in the song. I like this one.

Dos Enemigos:
I didn't write anything while i was listenin' to this song. I like it.

No Way and the Joses:
Were you a late entry? you didn't make it on to my CD, so maybe that why this song stands out. I think it is pretty fresh though, very crisp sound. A tight song.
