How do you get webspace?

Post by Mogosagatai »

How does one go about buying a domain name, like, say, phunt.com or something?

you are now going to get deluged with suggestions of the cheapest/easiest/least rip-off but the 800 pound gorilla in the commercial space is http://www.godaddy.com. Its where I got Bjam her http://www.TheBjam.com and I also bought some hosting that I haven't set up yet for what will be my site http://www.haverin.com

:-)

So are owning hosting and owning domain names different things? Is owning a domain name useless if you don't also own hosting?

Domain names are different to webspace.

Domain names : the actual address. thebjam.com or songfight.org

Webspace: https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/ ... %2B&ci=415 Hosting and servers. Someone else can probably explain it better than me...

Yahoo Small Business has some nice deals, GoDaddy has some stuff, as do various other sites. Other people will have better suggestions.

(Or you just find a friend who has a server and wait until they get pissed off with you for sending them damn yousendit.com files that they just give you webspace :D)

Ooooh looks like phunt.com was already registered in June 2003. Listed with bulkregister.com who may be holding it for someone or have it listed for sale?

Trying to enter http://www.phunt.com takes you to a guy who looks like he is a hoarder/reseller of sites.

Look for an alternative like I had to with Bjam e.g. http://www.theBjam.com

or!!!! http://www.phunt.us is available Sounds rude too :-)

OK I've Googled and come up with nothing short of some effort that would reveal the meaning of "Phunt".

Someone explain this to me please.

Well I honestly don't know what they're giggling about.

"Phunt" happens to be the name of certain cancer-killing cartoon creatures, and also of a completely unrelated, large, rotund monster. It's also archaic german or something for "about 5 pounds". But we didn't know any of that when we started.

I don't know if we're ready to spill the beans on what it means yet. I mean, it is defined on the internet somewhere, and I should think that it's made its meaning more clear through context, all of our various band names (except Aphunk and Ashok and the Squid) being imperative commands.

Oh, well excuuuuuse me for fucking up your little clues. Also, don't give them any more, they're not ready enough. And they're not yet hungry enough, either. Not by a long shot.

phunt.us is awesome! I'm voting for that. Mogosagatai is asking some questions to make us look silly. Can you believe he's a comp-sci major? sigh.

uhmm.. ____; don't tell. _____ your friends. Here, let me ___ you:

It's not that I don't want you all to know. I really just wish we were good enough to make it obvious without telling you.

And I like that it sounds rude.
