Big Official SFL '05 Video Thread

Post by the Jazz »

I need to know who wants a recording of Song Fight! Live 2005, and sooner or later I'll need addresses from people, so might as well start that now instead of waiting until the editing's all done.

You can post in this thread, you can send me a PM, or you can email me (ahuth AT berklee DOT net). Any special requests, this is the time to let me know. For instance, if you want a file with just your performance on it for your web site or portfolio or whatever. If I get an email or PM with just a mailing address and no info, I'm going to assume that means you want a single DVD and nothing else. Also, if you email me, please let me know who you are here on songfight, it will be less confusing.

Anyone who was there gets a free copy, of course, whether you performed or not. However, this is costing me a not-insignificant amount of money to put together, so donations are very welcome. I haven't decided yet what to do about people who want a copy but didn't attend, or people who want multiple copies. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, probably ask for a few bucks here and there.

What we oughta do is put together a best-of disc, which would be a lot cheaper to produce and send to everyone. An hour or two of highlights would make a pretty groovy movie!

I'm certainly open to suggestions, especially ones which reduce my workload, but not in a position yet to say what form(s) the final product will take.

I've gotten half a dozen PMs/emails so far, but I'm just collecting them right now so don't expect individual replies. Someone pointed out that if I want people to give me money I should get set up with paypal to recieve money; eventually it'll happen, and when it does you can be sure I'll inform everyone.

I like the best of and highlight reel

none of us really NEED our whole set.

Maybe I'm missing something here also...how's the sound? Or did we go over this already? I'd personally like a CD. (especially Roymond's and JT's 'I Know My Rights') (oh, and anything tonetripper)

I may be able to donate in a couple of weeks.

Well, I actually do want my and Octothorpe's entire sets, so I know how I/we sounded. Also there were a couple of sets that I missed due to dinner with Spud's friends at a restaurant which didn't respect our need to get our check dealt with in a timely manner.

Just to double check, my solo set was not captured, right? Because I went first and was the guinea pig for the video/audio setup, right?

Yeah, unfortunately all I have of you from Friday night is half of one song, but I do have Violet Wants it Her Way from Saturday night.

As far as sound quality: Friday night I didn't trust the camera's automatic levels, but it's all audible and I don't hear any clipping, so after I boost it here and there it should be fine. The acoustic sets are a bit echo-y but mostly good. Saturday night, using Tonetripper's microphone, came out very well and in FaBuLOuS SteReOo, up to and including a really annoying amplifier hum which I may or may not be able to remove.

So for the DVD, I'm thinking at least one song from everyone (if possible), extra songs as time allows from those who played longer sets, and the live fight in its entirety. I can easily put the same on an audio-only CD.

Groovy....

good to hear.

Is there any way you can zip up a file of the entire thing in wav format?

Not bein' pushy...if you don't wanna...please...feel free to tell me to p' off, f' off, b' off, which ever ' off ' fits your lingo ;)

But I'd be willing to break it up and host the individual sets in mp3 format. Alot of us have heard VERY LITTLE from the event. Bits and pieces is all and would probably be very excited to hear as much of it as we can/you have.

FLAC would be better for distribution of the source material, though since you only have two channels to work with you could probably get away with just putting it all through a compressor, putting out a single big .mp3 for each set at 320kbps (or a FLAC), and let other people crop and reencode individual songs. (Not like the Austin show where there were three channels to deal with and not everything went through the live board.)

How would I distribute such a file, or even group of files? Not through email, I can't send attachments of that size. I'll be honest, I've got a lot on my plate right now and I'd rather finish the DVD first, but if there's a simple way to send you a 50+ mb file then I'll see what I can do.

I'm having to recapture some stuff right now because of weird digital glitches in the audio track. Pain in the ass.

I can set up an FTP server if needed. Also, if you have web space, you could use that to store the files.

also, if you are on a broadband connection AND into IRC...we could transfer the file through the #songfight! channel.

Sweet. I definitely want a copy of whatever gets made. One or two of the songs I did, that's the only recording of them (including my "I Know my Rights"), so I really want an audio recording of it. I'd also really like to see my whole set in video, so I can see how I looked, but I really only need to see that once, if that's any easier somehow. I'm happy to donate.

I'd like... something... and it'd be fine to pay for any postage and mailing stuff.

I can set you up a songhole account with ftp for this purpose if you like.

That would be great, Spud. It occurred to me yesterday that many (if not most) of you (songfighters) have much better production know-how and equipment than myself, so there's really no reason for me to try to do it all if someone else is willing to work on the audio side of things. I can start uploading whenever you can set it up.

Which brings me to the problem I mentioned earlier with the Saturday night sets - annoying amp hum. The louder the music/ambient sound is, the softer the humming, and when there's nobody on stage it gets really bad. My theory is that's the work of the mic compressor, but anyway I don't know if my software will remove a noise that's inconsistent like that. It disappears completely during most of the actual playing, so I can edit around most of it, but during quieter sets it's a real pain. Anyone have any suggestions? You'll be able to hear what I'm talking about once I get the audio uploaded.

So... just waiting to hear when the songhole account is set up, and username/password stuff, and then I'll start uploading stuff.

Been a while since I stopped by this part of the forum. I'd pay good money to see footage of your keyboard's near-death experience at my hands. If it is free, all the better.
