BDJ - I'm never sure if stuff like this is meant to have a kitsch feel to it. erm...even if it had been recorded professionally I don't think I'd like it.

cheap bastards - I kinda like the fuzzy bass sounds, but this has an early 90's shoegazey vibe especially on the vocal and it doesn't work for me. I think less time spent on samples and more on the tune would help.

CIA - I'm usually dubious of human beatboxing, but I think that morphs in to the beat surprisingly well there; the guitar detracts form the impact slightly. nae bad

darren sethe - yeah...do the pidgeon with me! I can picture your foot on the monitor when you play this. bit too plodding for me tho

flxvvxm florvm - stick with it.

4th Dr & KGB - I'm always excited at the prospect of a cool blippy electro track, but as soon as the percussion kicks in I went right off this. it gets better...sounds like a pneumatic drill in the background at one point which is cool.

gert - the opening riff to this is cool cos it reminded me of Slint. I don't know any of you guys but I read some of the bullshit surrounding this entry and all I can say is that although I don't tend to listen to stuff like this it IS the best track so far by a long way. That solo alone makes flxvvxm flrvm completely redundant. the blend of all the different vocals is excellent.

j$ - I think you've managed to get a pretty good drum sound together for this. that chorus reminds me of Elastica so much, which I like. the rest is completely different tho, interesting vocal effects and I like the drum rolls.

LLL - yeah, this is well crafted but it sounds like a britpop b-side and I do like the female vocals but it's not enough to steal the vote.

Luke - I've listened to this about 3 times in a row now. I don't think it'll win but I'm gonna copy it and put it on a compilation with jeffrey lewis and the mountain goats, and there's a good chance I'll still be listening to it in a years time.

of science and numbers - I like that sound cos it's difficult to tell whether it's a distorted piano or a really bright guitar. Also, I actually like the fact that it kicks in late cos it's makes you think it won't...then it does. the tunes pretty good too. but the fade out sucks and takes all the tension out of the track. and then you do it again!! damn

Phunt - It'd fit in well on a Tuvan throat singer cd. okay, I wouldn't listen to it too many times out of choice but it does crack me up  in a good way. I really like hearing stuff I've not heard before in a track and this has plenty of that. oooOOOaaaAAAAHHHHH!!! and the phlegm is a magic moment. You should make an album of Postal service sell out tracks with this over the top; there must be a happy medium somewhere. I know you can find it. Although it is a lot of fun singing along to this. on your own.

the poor - more like 4 tracks in 1 here. "here comes a breakdown" is great; I was waiting for the dreamy synth stuff and this delivers nicely. and it was made all the more sweet by the horrible crap in the 1st minute.
This is one of those tracks which has many weaknesses, but moments of fleeting genius which give me ideas in spades. and there you are hurting my ears again. haha. such a breath of fresh air after all those tracks in which you know how they will end after hearing 10 seconds of them.

Ryan - This is pretty nice, and I don't think the mix detracts from the feel of the song too much. it's got a nice bounce and the ooohs make me wanna listen to S&G.

Thee Kids - I'm gonna get a popshield real soon, but is it really worth it when i'm only using an sm58 for vox anyway? hmmmm nah I grew up with the Bob Pollard school of home recording and he says cheap and nasty. lethargy prevails

Seems to me you've been given some good constructive criticism from this review. Why are you insulted? Are you really happy with how your song turned out? It's a valid question. Thicken up.

You know when STM first sent the beginnings of this particular Gert tune that was exactly what I felt. Like a tune I've heard off of Spiderland. Interesting.

I can't help but toss this in, the Location Location Location song sounds like they do nothing but listen to Deathcab for Cutie all day. If you had Ben Gibbard sing it, I could not tell the goddamn difference.

And that's my annoying, arrogant, elitist SF review board comment for the week.

a) I'm sure they take that as a compliment. DCFC, as annoying as they are, certainly produce some excellent-sounding and well-recorded music.

b) If you weren't new to songfight, all you'd think when you heard this tune is "god-damn, Ken needs to write a new song." :P

DCFC comparisson: Yes, that's fair. I know a lot of their work, and I saw them live opening for Sunny Day Real Estate in Santa Cruz, I think. Of course, for an obviously deductive reason, I can't remember exactly.

I'd have to say that Gibbard puts about as many words in one of his songs than all the songs I write in a year. His lines just keep going and going and the melodies stay interesting for the most part. The new single shows off a particularly annoying area of his vocal range, and this high pitched whining falsetto grates against my skull after a while.

Ken and I, we know you all reach for the graters (or micro-planars) much sooner with our pipes, so we tend to limit our singing to where we think the song will lose the audience without vocals. Point taken about the vocals coming in a bit late.

I am speaking for Ken here too, as I am sure he is completely okay with that.

damn i should be working but this fight is so GOOD i just can't stop myself from reviewing the songs i liked:

bdj: i didn't really like this, but i thought it'd be funny to mention that this is what people who aren't Carol Cleveland Sings sound like when they do CCS songs. well, ok, i really did like it, because the lyrics are funny as hell.

cheapies: i'm a sucker for artfag intros, and this one is great. cool juxtapositions of the chaotic samples against the laid-back beat. neato tune.

fluxxum: i swear this is the dude from Yo La Tengo having a nice laugh at us.

4th dr: goth techno that doesn't suck! it's songfight magic! i really like the energy and attention to detail in the mix - it's not a great mix from a fidelity standpoint, but it gets all the points across really well. wish the intro were a little shorter, but the farty sample is funny. big dumb fun, that's for sure.

j$: everything about your songs has tightened up in the last couple of months, and this one is no exception. i really like the vocal on the first few words of each of the first few lines, where you're losing the snarl. we all know you can snarl.

but again, god damn dude, is every song an indictment of my straight lifestyle? you have issues!

LLL: the poor rhodes got beaten down and replaced with loud guitars! i think this mix might have had too many cooks, i dunno. it is a cute Ken song with a good hook in the melody, for sure.

LH: great song, but, listen up: great performances happen when you play and sing like you mean it, not when you mumble and fumble and crank the gain way up on everything. if you had spent an extra day learning this and played it like you were Johnny Cash and you didn't give a fuck, it would have been C Hack great.

OS&N: this is the one that caught my ear the first time through, because i'm a sucker for the NiN piano sound still. reminds me a lot of the old Idiot Kings entries, or maybe Dr Worm. it's a little fey in the second half, but definately has potential. i don't think it needed to pass the 4 minute mark. aaaand, the timing of "seretonin" gets a little annoying. i think i'd have tried to keep the original flow and extended the "of" a little and tightened the rest.

PYF: now this is art. fetch me my triple latte, burned!

Ryn: man, this is a good little tune. viva las beatlespop.

TMK: the stink of the flaming lips is on your music, but the lyrical story is cool and i like the choppy weird kbd parts. great vocals on the chorus, and a damn fine song.

fuckin' great job everyone up there. massively good fight, best in a while.

i ended up voting for BDJ because the story is so cute.

The Poor...
In defence of my "song" I actually wrote about five. And when none of them worked out the way I wanted them to, I decided to destroy it all. Mwahahahaha!
Yes, it sucks for a lot of reasons. But every once in a while, you might forget the context and see that I was really trying (at times).
Thanks for your honest reviews, and for letting me know which parts you liked the most.
No, I don't have such a conceited opinion of myself as I expressed at the end... but I do pwn the Ha><0rz who pwn the n00bs.
I'll be taking that crown of hate, now.

Onward!

Big Dumb Jerks- Sounds like someone loves the midi! Guess who? I'll give you a clue: It's not me.

Cheap Bastards- Loving! Reminds me of Soviet and Fi. Nice atmosphere. Great vocals. I could have used some more change...

Clever Intarweb Audios- You beatboxing there? Good mouth work, you'd find a good career in the military... In my locale, there are these flowers called Blue Sailors. They make me think of you, because that's what you did in the navy. *bring the hate!!!***
oh hell i shouldn't drunk post.
Really. Good. Job. Kind of reminds me of U2, Pop era.

Darren Sethe- Zappa, get the hell out. Don't you have some pot to be smoking? Why are all the wrong people so long? *looks self conciously ashamed*

Flvxxvm Fckr- Nice guitar work. The end. Move on.

Fourth Doctor and KGB- That drum synth is really familiar.. like I had some childhood toy that made that noise... Beef thrower? Did you say beef thrower? Less Soviet than I'd like. I do like the middle part, but it took a long time to build up to something tolerable, and then gave it up just as quickly. Sigh.

Gert- Make this into a parappa song, and I'll know every single word. And love you. Until then, My number one song shall always remain "Kick! Punch! It's all in the mind!" by master Onion.
God, I'm all over the road tonight.
Nice keyboard there!
For some reason, you're reminding me of Jason Mraz as a teenage prostitute.

Johnny Cashpoint- Getting better! The guitar doesn't sound so far off, but I can't always tell over the cheese grater. What is that weird vocoder at the end?

Location etc.- First real hook I've seen all week! A nice song ensconced in the layers! Well done!

Luke Henley- Elliot! I knew you were still alive and well somewhere in the wide world of music! Tell me- who did you have stand in for you during Basement? I totally knew that wasn't you! You should send a card of apology to his family though... you shouldn't have loaned him all that depression. He was having a hard enough time trying to fill your shoes. Either that, or come back out of hiding. I'd prefer the latter.
Hugs and Kisses (XO),
Snail.
I figure you get an 8.
/whorish albumnamedropping

Of Science and Numbers- I always love distorted piano. Takes too long to build. Doesn't build enough. But you've really improved. At least during the first four minutes. You need to go back to pop-punk rehab now.

Phee you next Thursday- Retard choired! Better watch out! The insects will get you!

Ryan Rickenbach- You totally ripped my mad acoustic lick! Asshole! Then you take it and converge with sixties folk. Good job! And goddamn, you steal from Elliot too!

Meddlers! Mmmm..... Your music is a chocolate barmitzvah roller coaster, and you can quote me on that.

/finishes wiping his ass with the shroud of turin.

Just to qualify my comment a little, I thouroughly enjoy Deathcab's music. More than the vocals, I was refering to the instrumentation: the clean, juxtaposed guitar movements and separated but melodic bass. The tone of the whole song just gave me a massive Deathcab vibe. And then when the falsetto kicked in, that just basically sealed it for me. However, the vocals were, for the most part, the distinctive non-Deathcab element.

i thought i'd review the songs blue didn't like this week.

the poor
hm. i really don't understand why blue doesn't like this. it's all weird and shit. noncommercial. i actually kind of like this. at least parts of it. parts of it i can't stand too. and it's even got vocody shit in it. and blue doesn't like this? wtf? seriously?!? jeez, i'm not even half way through it and i'm looking at the clock. not a good sign. way too long. if you'd tried to keep it as a floydian atom heart mama like thing, i might buy it, but it seems to just deteriorate into a self serving wankfest. hey ma, look at me and my new casio!

darren sethe
ok, i think i know why blue doesn't like this. you seem to be taking yourself way too seriously. well done and all but mullet rock needs humor. that's what separates the Klownholes from the rest of you posers. again, too long. DSL gives you ADD!

clever intarweb audios
my guess is that blue doesn't like this because of it's borderline qualification as a "song", seeing as it's all sample based. i mean, you're just another fruity looper in his eyes. me, i think this fucking rocks. great job dude. i'm loving it all the way.

gert
well, i'm pretty sure i know why blue doesn't like this, and i'll bet it has nothing to do with the music. i could kind of link you in the same bunch as darren from above, but you guys have a hookier song, better production, don't seem to be taking yourselves so seriously, and are all pretty fucking excellent musicians. i think he probably doesn't like this because it's the best song this week and he's just jealous.

BDJ - Made me laugh. Try differing the melody in the verse from the piano. It sounds a bit like karaoke. But that doesn't matter, it's funny anyways.

Darren Sethe - Too long. Only way I would have kept listening is if the song had really funny lyrics. The vocals are kind of hidden. But the chorus is pretty sweet.

Cheap Bastards - A cool mix of sounds and harmonies. It was interesting none the less.

KGB - If this is meant to be a serious song, the lyrics ruin it. If it's supposed to be some kind of mockery to this kind of music, well then it's a bit entertaining.

LLL - I like the chorus. Everything else is just kind of there. This has nice production, and I like the girl/guy combo.

J$ - Nice drums at the begining. Reminds me of this drummer I saw at a Coltrane tribute. This song has grown on me. I like it much more now than I did earlier. This was close to a vote. Towards the end it gets a bit abstract.

Gert - This is a fun song. It will win.

Luke Henley - For a few seconds, I could have sworn it was Elliott Smith. But after a few more seconds, I got a different vibe. Elliott's vocals are always standout-ish, these are more...mopey? I like this song a lot. I know you were going for a lo-fi, sad kind of tone, but I could use a bit more on the vocals. Maybe just a little EQ. Anyways, I knew this earned my vote when I was singing myself to sleep with it last night. VOTE

Science and Numbers - Can't hear the vocals because they blend in with the piano. I find the whole song kind of slow and boring. Drums are distant.

Meddling Kids - If you changed the singer and the looped drums, it would sound a lot like Modest Mouse. Melody leaves me bored.

Me - I really like my tune, but I don't like the way it turned out. I was on time restraints this week. I think I could have made this vote-material with some more time. Ahhh well.

To those I didn't review: I'm not really into the experimental thing on SF, so my opinion isn't (and shouldn't) be worth a damn to you. Sorry,
