Best of Songfight!

Post by philtr »

I don't know if this idea has been proposed already, but here it goes:

Create a CD with the best songs of songfight (or maybe multiple CDs), sell them from the website and put all the profits toward the cost of keeping this website alive!

This idea was spurred on after reading people's ideas of which songfights were the best, why not put that to good use?

Another idea would be to sell the CDs of the best songfights (using the cover art for that fight).

Any thoughts?

songfight is pretty non-commercial by nature. there are no banner ads, no pimping of anything but each weeks songs and artwork. if the dynamic duo wanted to change that model, they would have already. who would decide which songs to include? the ideas been floated many times before.

it's a labor of love, not profit.

Like Jack said, you're never going to get a clear consensus on what songs to include. Besides, all the songs and art are straight-up free. Who is going to buy something like that?

If the people who run this website ever felt strapped for cash, I think a much more lucrative plan (which would also be easier to implement) would be for them to say "Folks, we need some cash." I can think of like 10 people off the top of my head who would donate to that, no problem.

So, although the idea of a paid CD isn't such a good idea(why pay for something you can just download/burn and print off the coverart?), I often introduce my friends to SF by burning a CD for them with my favourites. I did a CD earlier this month with theeeeese songs on.

1. More Than Soup – Starfinger
2. Between the Rain – Hostess Mostess
3. Bad Dreams – Frankie Big Face
4. Hey Ruth– Josh Woodward
5. Indie Rock Bottom – Ken's Super Duper Band 'N Stuff
6. Let's Get Naked – 15-16 Puzzle
7. Dark All Day – Deshead
8. Dizzy Spells – Jim Tyrrell
9. Violet Wants It Her Way – Lunkhead. (Although I prefer the live version with Erin)
10. Let's Go Boy – SongFight Orchestra
11. Accelerator – Frontalittle Squad
12. Tanker Truck – Cutie Pies
13. Systematic Panic – Abecedarian
14. Pawnbroker's Stepdaughter – The BeWells
15. One Less – Glenn Case

But then I'm sure that there are some people that would go "That's so silly, why include that? It's crap." You can't please everyone, and so on and so forth.
It's easier just to download things that are free and legal.

Good points. I guess I'll just have to make my own CD's.

Nice choices Bjam (and I don't say that because I'm in there, although it was a nice surprise). Our CDs cross paths in at least half a dozen places. I'm gonna burn me up a copy of yours. And I'll show you mine, but after I finish wrapping and labeling some gifts.

Can I just say that I think it's a terrible injustice that Bjam has included one of her own songs in her best of CD, and yet none of mine? This is clearly an oversight, but still I am slighted. I am adorable, remember? :)

Mr J$, I do believe that your voice is featured in SFO's Let's Go Boy. Unless there's someone going around singing like you, in which case oh dear, run for the freaking hills now.

That list is barely adequate. Surely you would want to impress your friends with the international nature of Songfight - yet there is no southern hemisphere representation there. Denyer or Sausageboy, to name just 2 examples, have some fine material that could be included - or perhaps you could think of another antipodean artist worthy of inclusion...perhaps...

I think Glenn Case qualifies, since he's the new lead singer of INXS, right?

Surely you would want to impress your friends with the international nature of Songfight... Sausageboy,
Impress and Sausage Boy in a sentance together?? Surely that is an oxymoron?

In Bjam's list, Octothorpe is strangely absent. Also, personally, I would swap Glenn's One Less for Please The Pig... I love that song.

But nice inclusion of 15-16 Puzzle's Let's Get Naked. First fight I was ever in. True.

If the first thing from SF you were to listen to was from Octothorpe, you'd think everyone was mad. So I love #, but a lot of my friends... probably wouldn't.

(And hey, if you don't like my list of songs, why don't you all go make your own list of songs. Y'know, one with international people, and rock songs, and talent.)

There was a whole thread dedicated to this idea once.
