Adonai
I wanted, and tried, to pull out some serious God Rock... instead what I got is a three-chord I-IV-V country gospel song.
If it stinks, it's not on purpose like some of my songs. That'd be a little too blasphemous in a song with this subject matter.
Everybody keeps saying preamp this, preamp that. Well, its preamped this time. Still a dynamic mic, tho.

If my song accidentally "steoreotypes" anyone, it's white protestants of the rural southern U.S.. A group from which I happen to be descended myself.MC Minimum wrote:I don't see how it's possible to write a non-offensive song for Adonai. The song is almost impossible to do without resorting to jewish stereotypes.

"adonai" is old hebrew for "my lord" and actually isn't usually used to address god but a terrestial being (king, leader, etc.) in the old testament. jewish stereotypes don't have to have anything to do with it.
it's a fabulous word for a song. it's got great prosody, good rhyming possibilities and brings with it a wealth of possible references in which western civilization is steeped. off the top of my head:
- a critique of consumerism, of replacing spirituality with your pocket-book (or the TV, or whatever your master may be)
- drugs; drugs and addictions of all kinds
- a girl madly in love with a guy who doesn't know she exists
- pair it with other terms used to address god in the old testament, cool ones like "el" and "elohim" ("jehovah" is kind of weighty, but i always like "yahweh/YHVH".) this ties in with the great science fiction theme of "the many names of god" (universality of human spiritual drive, our (futile?) search for the ultimate truth, etc.)
- the old testament is full of cool stories; retell david and goliath from goliath's point of view, cursing that little kid with a sling; job never used it, what does that tell us?
- find a psalm with "adonai" in it; those are supposed to be sung anyway

Maybe someone who's jewier than I (a mere fitty 'cent) can confirm/deny but, if I recall correctly, "adonai" is a word that you aren't even supposed to say unless it's part of a prayer; there's a different form of the word that you'd use in conversation. Not quite blasphemous, but along those lines. It's been many years since I had that discussion with a nice young jewish lass of my acquaintance, however, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if my memory fails me.
That isn't to say that one couldn't songfight! it up appropriately. "Set psalm to music" is probably kosher, "emo whine about unrequited love in high school" is rather less so.

Interesting. I'd have to actively try to make something offensive. I can think of a dozen angles for songs titled "Adonai" that aren't offensive. Not that I'm gonna, I'm just saying it seems pretty easy to me.MC Minimum wrote:I don't see how it's possible to write a non-offensive song for Adonai. The way I heard it, "adonai" is what you're supposed to say *instead* of "God" or "Yahweh". You're not supposed to say "His" name, so they tackle the problem obliquely by using "adonai".bzl wrote:Maybe someone who's jewier than I (a mere fitty 'cent) can confirm/deny but, if I recall correctly, "adonai" is a word that you aren't even supposed to say unless it's part of a prayer; there's a different form of the word that you'd use in conversation. Isn't Adonai only said in prayer and HaShem used in conversation?jb wrote:The way I heard it, "adonai" is what you're supposed to say *instead* of "God" or "Yahweh".
