Bad: The chorus is totally offbeat. It's all good when you're doing the spoken word, but when you're singing it's just not working out."

My intent was actually for Bitter Orange to be like "Red in the face" only I used the title and made it "Orange in the face" :P

But of course, alot of different people make different reads off of songs. And by no means would I rob you of your enjoyment of the song by telling you your recieved message is wrong. :D

So far I'm getting better reviews than I thought. I actually don't like this song compared to the last few I've done. My intent was to yell the chorus and I did but somehow it came out as me slightly raiseing my voice. *doh*
I could have sworn you said something about vomit in the next line. And so I made the connection. And it is a connection I am happy with.

The loops are chopped up/reversed/stretched loops of some saint-saens record I think. No auto-tune (I think that plug-in is like $400?) anyways it's just EQ/limiter. Thanks a lot, glad you like the song! :o

May I take this opportunity to recommend GSnap, the free alternative to Antares' Auto-Tune.

Alright, sorry about that, you just have a great, accurate singing voice. And the first orchestral piece I ever played with a good orchestra was Danse Macabre.

Does that mean next week we get a song in the "I Like To Pretend" battle where our hero dresses up as a janitor and makes a prison break?

PS- This was a really good fight but the Hell Yeahs got my vote easily. Bitter Orange is excellent. I've even got my co-workers coming over and asking about the tune.

I've been using a free version of Antare's here & there for almost a year. Though it says 'good for only 15 days' or whatever, it's still working now.

...and now reviews. Next, sports...

Andrew Reis
The noise floor is something fierce (the hiss that comes up whenever you're punching in for your vox). Rhythm guitar is a bit hesitant, timing wise, just a half a hair of a breath behind the beat, feels like. Loosen up that strumming wrist, yo! Listenable song, even with all my kvetching, though.

Basket of Hands
Samples are a bit choppy loopwise. More the Morricone loop than the Zorn loop, though. Sterile. Like they're all packed in the same track and stepping on eachother, rather than the organic flow from the old school-style looping of two turntables with the same LP on 'em back and forth, y'know? "Antebellum", that's fucking rich, dig it. And "I don't even have to rhyme for you" too. Don't dig the studio talk at the head and tail.

Doscientos
Heh. Perfection. Even the stick fumble/weird hit at the end. Thank you.

Eidolon
The squeaky string slides on the acoustic detract a bit from the enjoyment. Keys are thin compared to your guitar sounds, dunno if it's the single finger action, or the effects or what. Kvetching done. This is awesome. Great story. Though I think the Killer Tomato is kinda ticked for being left out, heh.

Evil-E
Thank god I didn't try to make the bitter orange/sunset connection in my SoCal song. You did it way better, especially with that guitar tone and the harmonies. Dude!

The Hell Yeahs
Ah ha ha ha ha! Way tres cool! Had to look at a board to make the "orange" part of the connection to the title. What processing makes your voice sound like that? The outro rocks hard. Thanks!

Melvin
Didn't really enjoy this. It's not you, it's me. The drum sound/space is just... off. That's not helpful, sorry. Lyrically didn't grab me, the (Fox/Spelling) arrangement behind it just made the emotional content seem... false. All that said, this is a technically successful song, well put together, written, etc. It's my tastes that are making this trouble.

Mighty Mouse + Pudding Delicious
Vocal delivery hovers between rigid and loose without ever hitting that accenty syncopation that breaks up verses quite often. ShitTAKEE! Yeah! Nice surprise, there. Though the talking over the outro is, well, yeah.

Noah McLaughlin
Nice song. Though there's a change in your voice at the beginning of the "Azure Sky" verse (1:19? to the end) which is... good. I don't know what sort of space you were in, performingly, but it sounded really really good.

Rabbit vs. Table
BEEEEEE MYYYYY AAAAANNNNNGGGGGEEELLL!
Sorry, I'm an asshole. Dug it, though the drums being so up in the mix, and kinda unsteady in parts (the swung snare under the "bitterness within"s is really jarring for some reason) made it hard to get through in later listens.

Rabid Garfunkel
Theremin meet snare drum. Snare drum, theremin. Weird song. Redneck freakout.

Rone Rivendale
Whispering. Vox kinda hollow, maybe EQ up the bass in it to give it less of a "Peanuts" cartoon/tv movie vocal quality. Also, the noise floor (hiss under your vocal punches) is icky.

Star Crossed Voyager
Oh god, in headphones, the hard panned wobble tremolo on the keys is actually making me unsteady (even more than the intro to Oingo Boingo's "Dead or Alive"). Good job! In speakers, it's not noticable at all. Nice song.

State Shirt
Sweet. Is that vinyl crackle in the samples? The style change up at the chorus is... dunno, maybe a little too extreme for me. I mean, it goes from the soundtrack to a Dick-Cheney-hunting-trip to a hand-in-hand-skipping-down-the-street feel (hand in hand with corpses, of course, but still...) and back and forth between the two. And they stay separate but equal through to the end, from what I hear.

The Subatomic Particles
This is really cool. Lou Reedelicious. Clipping crackles? And I don't mind a bit.

Reviews.

Andrew Reist - Well, I guess I can explain this one to you guys ... as soon as I heard the name Bitter Orange, I jumped onto this one and wrote and recorded the song in about a space of one day. That said, I listened to it over and over, and tried to fix the problems ... the drums are really an issue, and I got a new hookup for next week's song for Hammerhead. I tried to record it myself, but it didn't work out as planned, but at least I tried. The reverb was a problem because I applied it at the very start, because I thought the song was done, but later on I wanted to balance the lyrics a bit more, and I ended up making some of the reverbs far too loud. About the guitar being off beat, I know it's no excuse, but I'm not much of a strummer or guitarist at this point ... I guess I'll improve as time goes on.

Basket of Hands - Weird start ... not bad song ... some of the vocals seem to be slightly off beat ... I like the flow of the guy with the lower voice ... cool mix ... lots of cursing in classic rap style. Overall, I didn't mind it, but it's not one I would listen to more than once a day. I give it a 3 out of 5.

Doscientos - You guys have an interesting sound as a band ... is this supposed to be a song for a radio commercial or something? That was awesome ... almost too short for a song that sounded like that ... when you've got a catchy thing, don't drag it out, but don't cut it short. I felt like you cut me short ... it was still a rush listening to that. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Eidolon - Love the clean guitar sound at the start ... good riff too. Cool sounds. Vocals seem interesting, just need more consistency, but I guess I really can't judge people for having great voices ... I am really a sucker for songs that build up and have good dynamic changes ... so far this is my favorite. I give it a 4.5 out of 5

Evil-E - I love the start ... it really reminds me about something ... disneyland or something ... it's got a really good feel to it though ... maybe shouldn't have dragged out that first part so long ... it feels like it needs a guitar solo ... good vocal harmonies, but I hear some timing issues with drums ... not too noticeable though. Where is the guitar solo? This song could have been a lot more with a solo, and not dragged out as long as it was ... maybe if there had been more variety in the guitar line ... I give it 3.5 out of 5.

The Hell Yeah's - Cool start but weird voice ... not bad ... seems pretty energetic and cool, but I'm not digging the vocals so much ... probably more of a personal preference thing ... good drumming. I like the strange time change order but got dragged out a bit much ... adds a lot. Good ending. I give it a 3.75 out of 5.

Melvin - I love the guitar line. Absolutely love it. You've got a knack for writing professional sounding songs. Love the shaker/tambourine thing part way though ... rhyming george with ornge? I guess it works. I really like this song ... it's stuck in my head. This is definitely my top pick unless something better comes up ... I doubt anything better will come up. I give it a 5 out of 5.

Mighty Mouse + Pudding Delicious - Almost reminds me of Weird Al for some reason. Cool beat. It's too repetitive though ... needs a chorus. I give it a 2.75 out of 5.

Noah McLaughlin - Don't really love the vocal or guitar start off ... I can only hope it gets better ... don't mind the backup vocals ... I got sick of listening part way though and started skipping through to see if it got better ... work more on the vocals next time ... there were some good points. I give it a 2 out of 5

Rabbit vs. Table - Ride's a bit loud ... it's really all I can hear. Pretty cool song. Good vocal deal ... I really like it when it pulls back at 0:50. I like that sound a lot, but the snare should have been more basic when it first came back in ... some drumming issues throughout, but as a fellow drummer, I want to commend you for the job you did ... it is very difficult to record any sort of good-sounding drum track that you can be proud of, so good job putting in the real drums. Good song ... I give it a 3.75 out of 5.

Rabid Garfunkle - Creepy start ... sounds halloweeny. Interesting though ... not bad vocals either ... kind of waited the whole song for it to build up or something but it didn't ... not a bad one though ... 3 out of 5.

Rone Rivendale - Interesting start ... almost feels like a song that Napoleon Dynamite would do ... you have no feeling in those lyrics ... get into it more. I give it a 2 out of 5.

Star Crossed Voyager - 80s cheesy start ... really works for me though ... good vocal melody ... this could be stuck in my head for a long time ... wish it had build up more ... it's a bit long for a song with this little variety ... I really like it though ... I give it a 3.75 out of 5.

State Shirt - Cool intro ... mystical. I like the keywork. 50centish feel at the start ... I'm glad it didn't break into rap though ... could have pulled it off. I like how it breaks into halftime ... this is definitely a favorite ... I love the ending section. Great dynamics. I give it a 4 out of 5.

The Subatomic Particles - Cool feel ... vocals need a bit more stability, but the song is catchy ... could definitely be less busy at the first chorus ... one of the things about dynamics is that it's good to build it up through the song and not throw it all at the first chorus and not save any more strength for the last one ... I like this though ... singing needs work throughout ... guitar solo at end is a bit weak ... ending overall isn't bad though ...

This was one awesome fight, but I'd have to say my vote goes to Melvin all the way. You're awesome Melvin. Keep up the good work.

Andrew Reist: Like the dark minor chords and the vocals, although they could be turned up as others have mentioned. Kick drum seems too loud, but the drum programming is pretty decent. Not a bad track, just needs a little polishing and remixing to put the vocals and the lead guitar in front of the other sounds.

Basket of Hands: Pretty cool samples, but the vocals aren’t really sitting in the track. They’re a little too sloppy and way too loud. I guess there is humour in the fact that you guys are not actual hardcore rappers, but that type of irony doesn’t translate well to people other than yourself and your friends.

Doscientos:
Your vintage production sound continues to amuse and impress me, but this isn’t the sort of “songâ€

Well I haven't reviewed in a couple of fights, and I guess if I want to maintain my good standing in the community I better participate. :D

Mighty Mouse: Loved the Shitake joke. I never get tired of that. C-

Basket of Hands: Another song about making fun of other rappers in Song Fight. It's still fresh for now but I wouldn't rely on it for too long. I look forward to seeing what Posyden does to reply to this. Better music than the last one for sure but minus points cuz I'M not in it this time =) C+

Melvin: Every Melvin song sounds professional and I think sometimes that counts against you. I know it's been a while since you've won a SF. I think people go "Wow, another great song. But so was his last song." and that sucks. This song specifically is great. I like the Curious George line just as everyone else did. It's timely anyway, since the movie is out. B+

Evile: A sort of soft rock 60's/70's type of song. I didn't really enjoy it but it's not annoying or anything. C-

Sub Atomic Particles: Well, it's loud. The music is pretty good. D+

Dos Cientos: That was pretty funny. The whole commerical theme is unique and deserves bonus points. B

The Hell Yeahs: I'm a sucker for female voices in SF. The song itself is well done and the lyrics are good too although a little cheesy (and on purpose I'm sure). B

Noah Mclaughin: Sing me another song grandpa! C

Starcrossed Voyager: Music is pretty good. Lyrics seem pretty stock. (Although I'll be the first to admit the title makes it hard to be deep). B-

Eidolon: Solid effort. I like your singing voice. C+

RabbitVsStable: I almost thought I was listening to Pearl Jam for a minute there. I don't usually like songs longer than 3 minutes (since my own songs rarely bear 2) but this is good stuff. B

Andrew Reist: I like how you tied the title into the song. It's not easy with a title like Bitter Orange. From the p.o.v. of someone who considers himself a decent songwriter, I enjoyed your lyrics. B+

Rabid Garfunkel: Very cool concept. The way you sing reminds me alot of something you'd see in a movie like a western or something while the gang are riding on their horses. Of course the lyrical content isn't anywhere near that direction. It sounds great though. B

State Shirt: Another 4 minute song. On the bright side this is the longest at 4:06 and that's good for me as a listener. Your song sounds alright, but I think since I heard this one last it really hurt that it didn't really stand out. C

Looks like Melvin and Andrew are the two best entries, going by my grading. I'll have to give them another listen or three and try to remember to vote before Monday comes around.
Rone Rivendale: Rone is back!! I think this is your best work yet. Hilarious yet touching. Rone, if anyone ever seriously did you wrong, I’d have them killed. And don’t ever collaborate with that other rapper guy again. Like a great wine, you are best enjoyed all by yourself.
Melvin would you mind telling me what exactly about my entry you liked? I seriously don't like the song I entered. The music is basic and the chorus which was supposed to be yelled came out dull... and the chorus is way off beat towards the end.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style. :D

Rone: It's hard to describe the perfection of these lyrics as delivered in the trademark Rone deadpan which, perhaps paradoxically, always carries great sincerity to my ears (except when it's compromised by 'serious' hip hop collabs). I also like the fact that your voice is not obscured by harsh, jerky, out-of-time drum programming, which has been a problem on some of your previous entries. The subtle backing track enhances the intimacy of your raw, witty and utterly unpretentious vocals. You just need to work on that rhythm thing. Try tapping your finger to the beat as you record your vocals next time. Now we better stop talking in public like this, or some cynical genius is going to make a crack about mutual masturbation.

welp, I'm kinda bored, and drinking beer... figured I'd give my reviews on this topic, for fun... and everyone likes reviews anyway, right?

Andrew Wreist
well... I don't really like this one. not that that's bad or anything.. I like stupid shit. Drum machine is cool. I like drum machines. When they're used for a drum track to a song that is. not when they ARE the song.

Doscientos
Well this is something. haha! alright. good job.

Mighty Mouse and Pudding Delicious
yeah... I don't like music like this. it's ok though. uhhh.... I'll see ya next time, eatin' the puddin'

Melvin
hmm... I like "the melvins." I wonder if I'll like this. I know a guy named melvin. He's pretty fun. Kinda weird too. Ohh :( sounds Ok, I supose. Not my cup of Milwaukee's best, if you know what I mean.

Basket of Hands
I like the band name. that's pretty deathmetal... I hope the music is.. NOPE! well, I don't think I should review this.... however you did rhyme orange, didn't ya? good job.

Noah McLaughlin
From the name, I'm guessing I won't like it. but who knows... HaHa... maybe I'm wrong. well, I'm laughing... I hope that's what you were working for... nah.... not sure about this... not really my style though.. good job, I supose.

The Hell Yeahs
I'll give you a Hell Yeah. Punkish whiny stuff. I like the drums. recorded ok. I'm waiting for the deathmetal girl screaming.... and lots of blast beats. the ending is good, I guess, considering there's no deathmetal that is. good job.

Evil-E
oh... no you didn't! this better get real fuckin' evil pretty soon... I would definately vote for you then... with a gay song like this.. I'm still waiting.. you're not going to do it are you? NOPE! why are you Evil-E? or maybe that's why it's evil! you made me listen to the whole thing, thinking it was gonna rock! haah!! I like how you think, that truly is "evil"... good job.

Rone Rivendale
ahh.. no comment of the name. If you're trying to be a jackass... I guess it's ok.

Eidolon
I like guitar. nice pause.. yes... this is ok! DISTORTION! it's about fucking time... well so far I'd vote for you. good job fellah, or fellahs. you should try getting a little "weirder" I think that's exactly what you need. good!

Rabid Garfunkel
I love your name... really. start of song is awesome... saw, or theremin? theremin.... haha! I love this... I tried to do a country song.. I think you win though... yes, definately. no deathmetal ending though. yeah, I like this. good job. is that a real theremin? if so that's fucking awesome. get's a little too loud sometimes... not complaining though, i have that problem alot.

Rabbit Vs. Table
Kinda rockin'...... I do not like the way it was recorded... it has that computer noise, you know... is this the second song that says "peels back the skin?" hmm? I like the drums. guitar solo could be more intense.. if that was a guitar solo? maybe I'm a jackass. alright.

Star Crossed Voyager
Yep... nice drum programing... I think... I don't really like this.. It's pretty good though.

The Subatomic Particles
this is pretty good. once again I don't like the recording quality.. perhaps it's my shit, I don't know... oh, you got kinda gay there... hmm... NOPE. didn't really do it for me... maybe I had high hopes going into it though.

State Shirt
I wonder what that means? hmm? electronic stuff again.. maybe it's working up to it.... not for me... good job though. seriously.

welp... I will now vote for eidolon. Rabid Garfunkle was good too. that was about it though. good job guys. I didn't really like any of the other songs. sorry.

Does bitter orange mean vomit? Because if it does, then my lyrics are screwed ... I used the name more blatantly ... like an orange that is bitter, that you expect to be sweet but it's actually bitter, and leaves a bad taste in your mouth ... just to clear it up.

Well I must say then for the song I'm submitting tonight:
*The first 90% of this song is for Melvin because it's classic Rone.
*But the last 10% is for everyone who ever told me I was too emotionless and dry and boring. This song is for you. Enjoy. :D

Oh, and I voted for Melvin after giving him and Andrew some closer listening. Carry on!

The Hell Yeahs - Wow, yeah, oops, it's too quiet. I was trying to leave room dynamically, usually I squash it all the way. Cry, the guitar is so quiet. I hate mixing on recording day. Great job, Heather. Somebody asked about the vocal tone: Main vox = triple tracked, with 1 & 3 hard panned and turned down. The bridge fuzz is just fuzz.

Eidolon - I'm hip to the sound, and I like the sparseness during the verse lines, but there are a few points (particularly post-chorus) when it seems like the song is just kinda "still going," nothing is really, you know, happening in those spots. Crazy sound mix, and I like the little interplay musically during the chorus. The drums, during the chorus, don't seem to fit, but are, you know, unobtrusive for the rest of the song. Yay for two syllable are-unge.

Rone Rivendale - I dunno, it's a fine noise. It doesn't really sound like you spent much time on this, so, you know, neither will I reviewing it. Boo for 1 syllable ournj.

Doscientos - You guys have run such an amazing gamut of sounds. I've never heard a guy sing/talk on your stuff before, he sounds like Frank Zappa. This is a great lil' b-side to your recent wave of country flavour. Wither metal?

Basket of Hands - Boy, your rhymes are good, i s'pose, but they don't sound at all like you're comftorbale delivering them. The delivery is all over the place. Like, the "joe blow" area, seriously, is horrible. Needed many more takes, or a little more practice, or something. Nice beats, serviceable rhymes. Biff. (peel the skin back sounds so uncircumcised.)

Andrew Reis - This is the true sound of Song Fight. In every fight I have ever been in or listened to, this guitar sound, this vocal delivery, this drum honk, has been there. Please, push yourself in a direction. Make it special!

Mighty Mouse + Pudding Delicious - Glad for a concept. Hee hee, "MS Paint etcetera..." Why is nerdcore so charming? Thumbs way down on the ending, but overall solid. I don't like chorus on rap vocals, I like layers. Two voices, rhythmically in sync, sounds 1000 times better than the best chorus effect. Um, high five.

Evil-E - Weirdly panned drums! Classic structure, and a nice big old-timey chorus. The big vocal sound on "burns the sky" makes me think of "A Mighty Wind." Um, Evil E did the production on Ice T's early records. I wish this song had a guitar solo, but damn if that chorus isn't awesome. Ha ha, I just noticed: this song has extra bridges!

Star Crossed Voyager - "Pierced her bitter shell" Ho my goodness. This is some kind of time capsule new wave. I like your voice, a lot. The tremelo pan on the main keys make it nauseating to listen to in headphones, and I wish there was maybe just one more sound sprinkled in here somewhere. It's pretty sparse. Lyrically, I'm confused, as your metaphor slips in and out, like, like, did he cut her? Is his knife his penis? I'm so confusing, but I'm doing the 80's dance.

Noah McLaughlin - Boogers on toast! I am in hell! Preeoon-ceass! The over-over-affected vocals are killing me, seriously. I kind of like the background vocals, but maybe by default.

Rabid Garfunkel - This one is the pure fun. One pill makes me bigger, one pill makes me chortle. Kawliga! My favorite pronunciation of Orange, for sure. Are-unge. I never lived in Orange County, but from what I hear, this is an apt assessment. Huzzah for uniquity, word, etc.

State Shirt - "becaayrm" I like the verses a lot more than the chorus. The rock march feel of the chors is just, i don't know, uncomfortable. There are nice production elements sprinkled throughout, but this is exactly the kind of song that makes me change from 89.3 to 105.3, even if it means sitting through the damn chili peppers again. The instrumental areas just sound like production showcases, not like song meat.

Melvin - O.K., I've never heard your stuff before. It is pretty OK, but as a huge, HUGE Melvins fan, I was hoping it would be, like, heavy. This is my favorite song of the bunch to mis-sing, you know, runaway like bride, episode like three, american like pie, ad infinitum. Great sound, overall. Nice presentation. Identity like Bourne. It's a fun little game.

Rabbit vs. Table - I love the music. The music is good. It has a nice exploding rock crunch. I'm gonna guess this is a hand played electronic drum set? And that you really like Alice In Chains? Another "peel back the skin," which makes me think of, you know, going to the bathroom. Musically, I high five you, but I cannot dig the vocal delivery. It treads too much on the current / rock cliches to enjoy. Neat sound, though, and I'm looking forward to hearing more of your stuff.

The Subatomic Particles - This is tops. If this was on K records, I would tell everyone that I bought it. Yep. It's my favorite. Did you, by any chance, get Kelly Deal to play lead guitar? Great, want more. Love it.

Hey, I'm done! Fuck, been a while. Sorry if I sounded mean, anyone. I am just mean.

That sounds like good advice, but I'm not sure how to get the hook in there (Not that i'm saying i had one) without a chorus. Really, I'm just glad you don't recognize me from my high-pitched braces-mangled contributions of yesteryear.

Andre Wreist The vocals are too quite and sound like they were sung in a tin can. The lyrics are pretty run of the mill. You seem to rush some of them to keep up with the music. The fake drums sound too fake. The music is ok, but it is sort of slow and plodding.

Basket of Hands You seem to have trouble with the rhythm and timing for your delivery. Rapping like this makes me laugh because you have so much to say and you’re trying to spit it all out and it just sounds jumbled, like you’re having a hard time keeping up with yourself. You should enunciate more. The music is ok. I didn’t like the talking at the end.

Docientos Well, it’s short and sweet. The female vocals are a little too squeaky/cutesy for me. The male spoken part sounds very Frank Zappa-esque, enough said. How many instruments do you play? You seem to have such a variety. Is that banjo?

Eidolon I’m glad this has some electric guitar in it too. Your voice is pretty good. I like the keyboard parts and the use of other fruity colors in the lyrics.

Evil E Well, I guess the harmonies are nice, but I don’t find the music to my liking, real easy listening. Wow, you even fade out at the end. I suppose the lyrics are ok, just, California… I don’t know, I grew up in L A, this didn’t speak “Los Angelesâ€
