Ray Charles Sidefight

Post by Kill Me Sarah »

This just occurred to me now in a flash of inspiration, but wouldn't Ray Charles make a killer sidefight? Mainstream rap has already shown it's perfectly plausible to absolutely slaughter a great Ray Charles song, so we couldn't do any worse. I'd probaby want to do Hallelujah I Love Her So or Hit The Road Jack or Drown In My Own Tears or Hard Times.

Isn't it a little early in the morning to be smoking so much crack?

I meant "slaughter" in a bad way. As in mangle, desecrate, poo on the memory of, etc.

Personally, I'm thinking I'd love to try my hand at that Songfight thing...and get out of the covers game. I hear it's fun.

Yes they do.

I'm starting to worry that Kill Me Sarah is actually Jamie Fox.

If I were to cover a Ray Charles song, I think it'd be Talkin' 'Bout You.
Or maybe One Mint Julip.

errr...is that a reference to Kanye West's 'Golddigger'?

If it is - I didn't know that was a Ray Charles song involved there.

Whatever - I loved Kanye West's 'Goldigger' - I thought that was the song of the year

I just made that assumption cos someone mentioned Jamie Foxx - so if I assumed wrong ignore me

Anyway - I also probably dont want to commit to another coverfight - but I would like to have a go at a cover of "I Believe" if I get a chance (mainly for the "...oh Johnny..but you know my name is Ray" bit...cos my name is really Johnny...weird, huh)

Yes. The line "she gives me money" is from Charles' "I Got A Woman". I'm not sure if in Kanye's song it is a sample, or if it's actually Jaime Foxx singing it. I assume the latter.

Well, I've always seen it as "Kanye West feat. Jamie Foxx," so I'm guessing the latter as well.

how has no one mentioned ludacris's mangling of "georgia on my mind." that has to be the worst treatment/sampling of any song ever.

I've had so many ideas for cover fights. Louis Armstrong, James Brown, Huey Lewis, Ronnie Milsap, Roy Orbison, Spice Girls...

I think we should throw names in a hat (figuratively speaking) and then set up a poll with all of them and vote on which goes next.

How are cover fights usually determined anyway?

Well, it USED TO BE that someone would start a thread to toss around various cover fight ideas. Once a suitable number of people had agreed upon a cover topic and thrown their hat in the ring, they would decide on a mutually agreeable schedule, and contact the covermaster, who has been in the past Stubs of Octothorpe and then for a while JB, and a voting page would be set up at the coverfight site. In the way distant past, Stubs used to provide server space. The old fights are still archived there, and can be accessed at the sidefight page.

These days, it's an abbreviated form of the above, with someone posting "Who want to cover the Eagles?" or some such, and a bunch of people say "I Do!", and they go off and do it.

Man, it's a bitch to get old. And grumpy.
Maybe, together, we can turn this around. Perhaps you could be the new covermaster? I'll talk to JB.

Ooh, a Covermaster. What a good idea. Maybe even a Sidefightmaster (so needs a better name). Two people to help keep the many projects organized and under the Songfight umbrella.

We have been doing things haphazardly and that is how some of these coverfights and such get neglected.
