I wasn't disappointed. I actually thought it was pretty good. Kind of weird, but good. The effect was a bit awkward to listen to, but not bad overall.

By the way, where are all the reviews? I've only seen two, and one of them is mine.

Jay Raj ... I was going to post a thread asking for a cool band name, but that seems like a really cool idea. When I make a band, that is going to be the name. Thanks! Oh and by the way, sorry for complaining about the lack of reviews. I just want to see reviews of my song soon so I can work on my next one and improve on the format.

Um, don't know which alternate universe Songfight you're visiting, but if you're halfway reviewing through 32 songs, then you've already reviewed the 15 songs in this fight.

Well, I wasn't going to post my reviews this early...but since there's relatively few.

Andrew Reist
I like the way the vocals are mixed during the voice. I'm a sucker for dueling voices in each headphone. I like the break around two minutes, especially the drumming. I'd like to hear some more actual "singing", perhaps during the chorus portion. I also thinks it should have ended when I thought it was going to around 3:30. Overall I don't love it, but it's decent.

Chocolate Flavored Penguin
I like the opening bass and then it's downhill from there. Sorry, maybe I'm turning into my mom early but this is one of those things my kids would listen to and i would say "that's just noise!". There was no definite structure or rhythm to it. You're obviously capable of making lots of neat noises, but you need to whip them into submission a little more. You might want to check out The Orb for an example of how you can sort of drift in and out of "just noise" while having a definite song. The Orb was the direction I could see this song going.

deshead
Your SF! reputation speaks for itself, you've obviously got something special. This song makes me want to raise my lighter in the air. But I'd probably catch a lamp on fire or something. I love the harmonica and which it had stayed a little longer. Something in the song strikes me as not entirely genuine though. I can't place my finger on it...I guess something about it sounds a little too mainstream-y for my taste. But it's pretty much flawlessly executed and pleasant to listen to. I think it's too "safe" to be a vote contender for me.

Dustpipe
Is this all you, or a band? It evokes pleasant memories of jamming with friends in tiny spaces on crappy instruments. I think there's potential in this song. I don't know that the screaming throughout the entire song seems necessary. Here too I'd like to hear some "singing" proper. I like the break around 2:45, it's very clean and since it's where the vocals drop off, it makes me think that the vocal mix itself is sort of messing with the first part of the song. But then when the vocals come back in it's much cleaner sounding. I'd like the whole song to sound like that minute between 2:45 and 3:45. And put a little more gusto into a big finish instead of that slow fade into "are we done now?"

Eddie Lance
Wind effect is cool. The piano isn't bad. I can see w/ the piano and vocals you were going for something very simplistic. I agree w/ the Lou Reed asssessment of it, and in my opinion, Lou Reed didn't even pull it off that often. I guess wanting to hear "singing" is my feeling here too. Without it, the song seems to meander and drag on.

Fourth Grade Gladiators
Have you listened to the later albums of Tripping Daisy? This sounds like it could be a lost track off of one of the last two. There's also some Flaming Lips in the vocals. Oddly, when I listened to this for the first time yesterday, I wasn't really keen on it...but I'm kinda digging it now. I had to go back and listen to your other two songs because I recognized your name, and I have to say, IMO, you seem like you're getting better w/ each submission. This is def my favorite so far. I think like Tripping Daisy, sometimes I just can't listen to it, and other times it's my favorite thing to listen to. Vote contender.

Hoosenbergler
Gabba Gabba Hey! Did someone besides Marge Simpson say that? I think this song works for what it is...though I haven't figured out what it is yet. In places it sounds like Arnold Schwartzenegger. I can't imagine listening to this much, but it's executed well and I'd probably dance to it.

Ill Cricket Crew
Haha, sorry but that bass line sounds like it was stolen out of Beverly Hills Cop. The kid is a nice touch, cute. The chorus part doesn't work for me, a little 311-esque, but not quite pulled off. Several of the rhymes are done well...one guy sounds like the Korn guy and it doesn't fit w/ everyone elses'. I like the closing skit, funny.

Jim Fallope
Ok, your song actually worked for me yesterday day when everyone else said it didn't, and now whatever the fightmaster's done has made it not working for me. Fortunately I remember the song. You are someone I'll always check out in a fight, and I think I voted for you last week. That said, this song didn't do it for me. A little too silly and short. You can obviously play and I like your singing so...once again I'd like to hear singing.

Kill Me Sarah - Me
I imagine this could be a drag for someone to listen to if they weren't in the mood for it, but I wanted it to be kinda slow and drifting. I'm not thrilled with all of the piano parts. I actually had to record this from a cheap old Yamaha keyboard to a cheap Tascam 4 track tape recorder, and then stream that to my PC. So I couldn't go back and make the edits I wanted to. There's also a couple hiccups where I cut out some audio data that was clipping. I realized as I was writing all of those other reviews, that I didn't really "sing" all that much on this either. All said, I'm actually pretty pleased with it. I like the keyboard voice that sounds like it's breathing. I like how it's laid back and soothing.

kweep
Another strong first entry. Your guitar playing is well performed. This is not a style of music I would ever listen to outside of SF! so it's hard to be unbiased when I review it. The part where you talk about hoping to be clever and the part shortly after that I enjoy. I like the singing style there, reminds me of old Silverjet (well, all Silverjet would be old) and I like that. Welcome to SF!

Middle March
I like this song...this is a song off an album I'd probably buy :) It's mellow and your voice does a good Tom Waits impersonation. It's not mind-boggling new or different, but it's a well crafted song. Vote contender.

Thanks For The Frisbee
The guitar-picking caught me off guard at first but works within the context of the song. I can see you playing this song on TRL with teenage girls sobbing and singing along. It has that kind of Dashboard Confessional vibe, although I like it far more than anything DC has ever done. The screaming at the end makes me...uncomfortable, and I think that's why I like it. I know not everyone digs it, but I like the way you go through this mellow, tame song and then you feel kind of on the spot at the end. I also enjoy the falsetto in the background vocal. Vote contender.

Wages
I got the same critique on my Adonai song about my notes shifting too much. I kinda like it though. I don't think it's something that should be used all the time, but it works occasionally. I have a bigger bone to pick with the aimless guitar playing. Actually, I wonder how others feel about this. If I attempted to play a lead in a song, it would sound exactly the same...I'd hit some notes, miss others. I'm wondering if it's better to go ahead and do it anyway, since that's the only way you learn (and after a long time of playing, I'm seriously no better than you are). Or if it's too distracting and should be left out of a song if you intend to fight with it. I'm drawn. On one hand we'll get the chance to hear those leads continue to improve, but on the other hand it sort of distracts.

WreckdoM
And we're to the end...your hip hip hooray isn't very enthusiastic. Here again, we have a song that seems a little too drawn out and meandering and um...w/out singing. This song doesn't work for me, except maybe as a deep album track amongst other better songs, as a sort of palate cleanser or something. Hopefully that album won't have Punk Bartender on it though.

Andrew Reist Cool opening. Works well w/the song's moody feel. I would have liked to hear drums earlier on. I agree that it kind of drags on. I think this would improve with more layers. 4/10

Chocolate Flavored Penguin
Noise. I like noise, and today's sound-makers are fun to play around with. Entries like this can make us question our definition of a song. If I was tripping, this might be something I'd like listening to. Or it may make me really angry and want to go out and destroy things. 2/10

deshead
Played this for my wife. She looked at me like, "Man, you're not winning this week." Haha. Great tune. I like the line about the golden rule, but the "Man, that stinks" line feels out of place. Nice solo toward the end, though it seems to end abruptly. Love the singing, esp. when there are two vocals. Very nice melody. Yes, a bit safe, but it's the best of the bunch in nearly every aspect. 9/10

Dustpipe
Yeah, this has a jam session feel to it, bringing back nice memories. I agree that actual singing would 'work' better. I'm actually finding that's a common thing here -- songs begin well, then someone screams or speaks the lyrics. I appreciate everyone wanting to be expressive, but it often feels like a cop-out and acts as a distraction from the rest of the song. Keep in mind, this comes from a sub-par singer who needs a lot of work on his range, so take it for what it's worth. 6/10

Eddie Lance
Ah, Lou Reed. I like the wind. The piano and noises work well, esp. around 1:50, where it becomes more melodic. This helps break up the song, but doesn't change the sparse effect. In fact, it could use more change in pace/tone, maybe at the outro. 7/10

Fourth Grade Gladiators
Man, there's so much going on here. It's a sonic assault. It builds and backs off, so the overall effect is that it held my attention. Sometimes, there's too much going on for this tired, old brain to handle, but I imagine it's fun for younger, more energetic people (just call me Grandpa...) 7/10

Hoosenbergler
I can't believe this was under 2 minutes. It felt more like ten. This comment gets old, but it's nothing I'd want to listen to. That said, you gave it an effort and had fun. Like Weird Al, it's not music that sticks with you. It's more like a leech; an experience, but not one I'd want to experience again. 2/10

Ill Cricket Crew
I like the use of the young singer. I also like the rap. Nothing I could ever do! Sounds like you all had fun, esp. the end bit. That said, it felt like it went on a lot longer than it actually did, even though it was only 3 minutes. 6/10

Jim Fallope
Silly and short (could be shorter, actually). I suppose it would be fun, but it's not my favorite entry. Sounds like you had fun playing it, though. 2/10

Kill Me Sarah
Drags on. I think you could have accomplished that drifting mood even with a faster tempo. In fact, I'd be very interested to hear it faster. I think it would have some serious potential then. I like the organ, though maybe if it was more dynamic or layered, and built up as the song went on, then the song would be more interesting. 5/10

kweep
Very cool. The riff reminds me of Morphine -- low-down and dirty. The lyrics are hilarious and the guitar playing is very strong. It ends where it should. 8/10

Middle March
Me. I can't truly review it, and I don't want to preface it too much, but I posted earlier how this came to be -- very quickly. Listening now, I think it's too slow, I'd like to add harmonica, a better defined lead, work out the vocal kinks, and so on...it's like handing in an exam, knowing that you could have done so much better. Ah, well, onto the Butterfly Massacre. --/--

Thanks For The Frisbee
Reminds me of me and friends about 20 years ago. Good effort -- I like the lyrics, smart, straightforward structure. I give you credit for the screaming. It threw me, and it doesn't work, but it shows that you are willing to take risks, and that's very cool. Maybe re-do this, but scream farther away from the mic -- give yourself some room? 6/10

Wages
This has a Jonathon Richman feel to it. I like the simplicity of the structure and playing, though the lead could be "cleaner". A misplaced note here and there is endearing. All through the song, they're distracting. Looking forward to more! 6/10

WreckdoM
Yeah, not my cup of tea (or mug of suds, even). I think if Leatherface from TCM made a song, it would sound like this (though he would insist on putting chainsaw noises in the background). 2/10

------------------------
This has been a cool experience. There is a lot of potential in these songs -- it's great fun listening to all the different styles and approaches. Oh, and I wasnt' going to do the whole scoring thing, but I know it's something that I'm interested in seeing from others, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Peace.

I hear this bar down the street called Not Exactly Normal has got 15 bands playing tonight so I go check it out. Kind of a dive but I go in anyway, grab an empty seat to the left side of the stage and order a beer.

Middlemarch - there’s a dim red spot on some guy sitting in a chair and a smoke is hooked behind a guitar string. Good choice for an opening act I guess. I’m in the mood for something mellow and he gets my toe tapping. Nice work…

Thanks for the Frisbee – Hey…this is my taste. Head’s bobbing…some girl is looking at me but not in a good way. I’ve realized I look very goofy right now with a bobbing head.
Like the line about some German head stuck under a truck…Woah buddy!…what did I do? STOP YELLING AT ME!

Hoosenbergler – Now von Shprockets vee dance! Beer’s done and I think I need another for this one. Come to think of it…very catchy. I feel this bar went through a wormhole time warp into the 80’s and Wolfshein featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger has grabbed the stage. I can’t help but like this.

Eddie Lance – I close my eyes, down the rest of my second beer and try to appreciate the spoken word, windy day piano stylings of Eddie but I get distracted by the waitress dropping down the third beer without me asking…on the ball I would say. Sorry…I can’t appreciate it Eddie. Now if it was Eddie and the Cruisers maybe. And now I have to pee.

Chocolate Flavoured (I’m from Canada) Penguin – I was in the can, sorry. Some guy said after 30 seconds of you guys playing he had to go to the can as well. Seemed to be in a hurry.

Wages – They prefaced their performance by saying they just picked up a new guitarist and this was his first performance with Wages and to welcome him with open arms. I think this is the first time he has heard this song…but, like plucking nose hairs, there’s a painful and annoying pleasure in listening to his plucking interjections. Not overly exciting but something I can groove on.

Dust Pipe – Crappy instruments get pushed to the front of the stage and 3 young guys with greasy hair and nerdy glasses wearing long sleeve shirts with T-shirts over top that have pictures of Potsy Webber on the front. Interesting. Good musicians with some work to do together so I buy them all a beer when their done but the waitress says to me they’re under age. I tell her I will have 3 for me then.

Kill Me Sarah – I try and stay awake but I see that that girl has just picked up one of the Dust Pipes. I need something rocking right now and KMS is not giving it to me.

WreckdoM – I’ve heard these guys before and they have always disturbed me. Hip-Hip Hooray, they do it again! I am becoming a fan and ask if they are selling any T-shirts. Wouldn’t be exactly normal if WreckdoM didn’t fight alongside.

Jim Fallope and His Fallopian Dudes – Best band name of the night. I think I heard this song on the Goofy Greats album back in the 70’s…the one right after Guitarzan by Ray Stevens. I’m very drunk now. The song started out promising but fizzle popped.

Fourth Grade Gladiators – The guy on the mixer should be shot. I don’t know if it’s the seat I occupy but it sounds like they are playing in a can. I want to hear more because I like the rocking and the rolling. Good job…I very happy now.

Andrew Reist – These guys play and sing like they should be loud…and I mean Gwar loud, spewing blood and green fluid and out of their heads all over me in the front row loud…but they don’t. Let loose boys – this could be good.

Ill Cricket Crew – This rap band needed another dude to fire off a verse or 2 so I obliged. I think it’s pretty good and these guys are freaking awesome. I buy myself a beer and put it on their tab.

Kweep – The rocking I asked for earlier has happened. Me rike-y…but what the hell does he mean by Song Fight!? Geetar has me screaming in the front row making devil horns with my hands. Nice and quick – in and out leave me wanting some more.

Deshead –. Kweep…sorry dudes. The best for last in my drunken eyes and ears. How can a guy harmonize with himself playing live? Deshead can do everything. I buy the cd but lose it on the bus ride home.

I don't know who Jonathon Richman is, but I'm getting some now so I can check it out.

On misplaced notes, do you mean in the vocals or the lead guitar?

Thanks! I plan to do more.

One minute intro is too long, vocals so hard to hear. I think the heavier parts at the end would work better if the guitar tone at the beginning was much cleaner. Acoustic even.

Thanks for the review ... all your reviews were pretty awesome, but it was cool for you to say this. I wish I could spew green fluid out of my head ... oh and it's just me. Not guys. No problem though.
