A toss-up between The Streets and Franz Ferdinand for me. (which is a potentially unpleasant visual image)

Being contentious, Modest Mouse is my tip for the emperor's new clothes award 2004. So very ordinary. I actually took it back to the shop and exchanged it for the new Hidden Cameras album which is miles better.

Obviously, this is only one opinion. I get a sense that MM might be another TMBG in that they just don't translate to the UK mindset that well.

You guys HAVE heard old Modest Mouse, right? I do not have Good News (I know, I know, I'm unclean) but I do own The Moon and Antarctica (fantastic album) and the Lonesome Crowded West (even better.) I'm told that This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think(Talk?) About is their best. I like the Lonesome Crowded West best out of the two I have. But again, I do not own Good News, even though Float On and Ocean Breathes Salty are fantastic songs. Ah, the woes of a broke teenager.

Interesting thoughts - it's always fascinating which countries like which music.

You say TMBG don't translate well - do you mean that TMBG aren't popular at all in the UK, or just in your opinion. Why I ask is that TMBG would be considered very popular in Australia - radio JJJ has played them a lot over the years and they usually feature in Top 100 lists etc. that occur from time to time. When it comes to American music, I would have thought that the UK/Aust mindsets would be fairly similar.

Modest Mouse on the other hand, doesn't really seem to have taken off here at all. I've heard them played a few times on the radio - but there doesn't seem to be much hype about them - and I can take them or leave them really.

Now, The Streets and Franz Ferdinand are pretty huge here. FF even gets played on the crap commercial radio stations. They are both very "British" sounding, which usually doesn't bother Australian audiences - but do they translate to the USA? Mike Skinner in particular I would think would be a bit of an ordeal for a lot of American ears.
