sidefight.com

Post by Kill Me Sarah »

Hey everybody, I got to thinking today that it would be cool of our side fights had a more central repository as well, so I went and picked up sidefight.com. I have some webspace for it and am currently hosting it. So if and when side fights are organized, if you would like to host them on this site, please just send me a PM. My webspace/bandwidth is not unlimited, but I have enough to share with those of you who don't have anywhere else to put songs for the side fights. If anyone has further suggestions for development of this domain, let me know. I have set up a redirect to the Nur Ein at http://www.sidefight.com/nurein (if Niveous decides he wants to host this page here instead, that's fine) and judges, if you would like @sidefight.com emails set up, just let me know. I wanted to show my appreciation for this site and the great community by setting this up, so please let me know all suggestions you may have.

Awesome.

I kinda wish I'd known about this Nur Ein thing earlier though <_>

I could very easily do so, but I'll wait and see if there is much interest in this. The forums here are pretty much unbeatable so unless someone can think of a valid reason to do so I'll hold off. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I would like to get some kind of homepage set up for it though, if anyone has suggestions for that. I thought about installing a PHP-Nuke on it and setting up accounts so people could upload songs and whatnot. Has anyone worked w/ that much? I've fidgeted with it but never put it to much use.

First, define a "mission statement," so to speak. What's the point of ths site? Choosing a CMS will be a lot easier when you have that clear.

I would think this would be a place to host sidefights, kind of a sister page to the Sidefights and Highlights forum. It would be nice if there was a front page that explained the point and then had links to all the different fights. Perhaps eventually hitting the point where you could have separate domains for each (manilow.sidefight.com) or something.

I think it might be good if we used sidefight.com as a sidefight archive. Too many times a good song from a sidefight disappears into the ether after a while. This could be a place to keep them.

Yeah, and there could be a page for each one. Like, a main page not unlike that of songfight, with maybe an archive that lists sidefights instead of weekly titles. And in fact, Mr. Kill_me_Sarah (who, by the way, is awesome for doing this), I wouldn't be surprised if Spud and JB would lend you the code format of Songfight if you wanted to format it that way.

Of course, I'm only talking about current and future sidefights. Someone could be a hero and go around scooping up all the old ones, but, whatever.

I'd be willing to (slowly) dig up stuff from some of the old sidefights for an archive. There have been some very cool fights and hxaros that could use some representation.

(Example- if you have never heard The Hell Yeahs' "Charlotte Sometimes", find it!!!!)

Okay, I've posted a very raw index page for the site (just so there's something there) and did a very quick and dirty copy of the Nur Ein page and set it up here: http://nurein.sidefight.com. I was too lazy to re-do all of the contestants entries so I just linked to the livejournal site for now.

Would anyone like to create a sidefight.com logo? Perhaps a variation on the classic Song Fight logo or somesuch?

Also, I'd like suggestions for how to set this up as an archive from anybody. Should it be database driven? If so, any MySQL/PHP gurus out there want to lend a hand? I've done some database programming but it's not my specialty, and most of what I have done has been in ASP w/ Access DBs. I wouldn't mind combining some features of Song Fight/SomeSongs. In other words, I'd like to be able to have people host their own songs as much as possible and link to those, but offer to post on sidefight.com if they don't have the means to self-host. Or maybe just restricting one thing or the other would be easier?

Let the suggestions flow!

i was, in fact, being sarcastic.

if it's hosted somewhere else, what, exactly, is it a sidefight to?

hosting it somewhere else instantly puts it in competition with songfight, whether that is or is not your plan. it is likely to provoke the fightmasters, who have enough to deal with without having to make the decision of whether or not they want to pull the sidefights officially under the songfight umbrella - but you should at least offer them the courtesy of offering to help do that, first.

songfight has plenty of resource available for people who want to work within it. dividing the network will only lower the value.

I respectfully disagree. All of the sidefights are already typically hosted elsewhere, eg. Niveous' Livejournal page for Nur Ein. This is simply creating a common space for things that would generally be spread out across dozens of different sites, and that, in my opinion, is what divides the network and makes it less accessible. I do agree that there's no reason to set up a separate forum because the ones here are so rich. Also, I was sure to PM JB about this before posting about it here and was sure I got his blessing before moving forward.

I think Bryce meant this to be an added bonus in the Song Fight cookie jar, a place where all these spuriously hosted fights could be archived for or great granchildrens granchildren. I think he meant it with all the best intentions.

Why? Surely they do enough as it is. SF doesn't host sidefights, which is always a problem for some people.

Ah politics. You're probably right, though this is an exciting place when you're new and he probably didn't think he'd be upsetting anyone.

Or ultimately add to its strength.
I think it was a really nice thing to do... Whether it work is in the laps of???
And after all it's not like SF was going to float on the NASDAC

the inevitable direction of a second web site is to host fights. call me a pessimist, but i can only see this as being a dividing force in the long run.

... as long as it's linked solidly to SF, and the forums remain as one unified location, it's no biggie to me. But I gotta second Blue on the idea that pulling TOO far away from the community aspect of SF does kinda detract.

Or something like that.

But I do respect you busting out with some contributional efforts KMS, that's cool. Very cool.

I think with the forums remaining here, there's really no way for it to break away, since all of the debate about what the fights are and arranging will still be done here. Secondly, I don't have the time or energy to make this new site into it's own entity. Thirdly, I have no desire to do so.

With respect to the arguments about a sidefight website ultimately dividing the currently unified network...

What do you guys think about Remixfight? What about Writefight?

Those are two fairly awesome resources that I really wish got a lot more attention. I'm still "loyal", if you will, to Songfight, but whenever there's a lull in activity here I turn to those other two (although, unfortunately, there's almost <i>always</i> a lull at the other two, these days--especially the near-abandoned Writefight).

So anyway, I was saying... Do y'all think those other two sites divide this awesome network, or enhance it?

I think they enhance it. In fact, I don't think they enhance it enough. And yeah, they may have thrown in a few divisions here and there (Jon Eric and sparks only hang out at Writefight now--Future Boy, when doing anything, only goes to Remixfight... but I digress). But those divisions are, well, inevitable, and in fact they're good, because people's passions aren't permanent, and, no, Songfight doesn't offer <i>everything</i>.

And aside from all that, the name <i>Side</i>fight is by nature giving reverence to Songfight, and admitting from the start that's it's just a side thing. In fact, something like (ahem) Nur Ein is something that would appear <i>less</i> divided from this Songfight network if it were placed on (or linked to from) a website such as <i>Side</i>fight.

I'm all about the unification, and I think a sidefight website ultimately helps the unification. With spreading of a community comes local divisions within it, but that doesn't necessarily destroy the original unification--just makes things more complicated.

And we all love that, right? No really, admit it. We do. We want more more more, and we love it. Why do think we're doing Nur Ein? Fuckin' Manilowfight? Abbafight? GOM? Hxaro? AADs? Gabillion other things...
