i dont exactly know what you mean with pitch shift... i was scratching to get a scratching sound, that's the only way (i guess you could call it pitch shifting). you need turntables to scratch. problem is most peoples on songfight sound like tame turtles on the turntables. i guess they dont practice.

produce - i thought you were using pitch shift to scratch, i was wrong. i use tables everyday mix everything from dnb to trance to straight up turntabalism the slow pitch transitions (slow record hand for pitch difference) are really clean take me thinking it was processed as a compliment.

i was also wrong when i wrote common sample to fish sandwich, that was a note on the paper and had absolutely nothing to do with your song sorry man, i am disorganized

liechty - what samples? all live, xcept programmed drum machine. the dnb beat was on vinyl. vocals through my guitar fx processor. Redundant and a little off on the first capsaisin yes i agree, but the week fell quick. i sent in like 3 minutes before due time still trying to mix it.

This was a really great fight, my earliest song is from september of 2003 with happy machine ankle under the name dj doppleganger. and much has progressed. the entrys are alot better as a whole. Rattpoizon convinced me to fight again, i am glad i did you guys rock.

... well, those samples. frankly, i think your drum sounds are played out. but i see you mix trance and what not: all that dance music jive is just the "amen" break resampled about a million times so i guess you guys dont get tired of the same sounds.

No diggity...never saw someone get so upset about "one negative point" amidst a review where someone tells him he's a "contendah". I should be so lucky to get such a review.

welp, I'm drunk...... so I supose it's review time!

spoon man
this is kinda good. get's a little annoying... but I'm not one to talk. probably could have change it up a bit more. I like "the beat" of it.

The Cow Exchange
yes! nice fast pace tempo... I like this, but not rockin' enough for me, too much actual "singing" turns me off usually.. nice production, I think.

Fish Sausage
well, I supose this fits the title... other than that, there doesn't seem to be any other good selling points. drums and synth noises are pretty cool though.

Triptolemus's Notions Unto Hoi Polloi
uhh... this is kinda like the last guy... I like the music more though. it reminds me somewhat of Captain Beefhearts "Smithsonian Institute Blues" the begining of it anyway. uhhh.... yeah. well this is a long guy, ain't it?

TB
uhh... haha! alright. I'm feelin this. nice. good sense of humor! RattPoizon offers you its friendship.

Carpet burn
so far, pretty good... well, you're startin to lose me. guitars are well done. I don't care for the vocals much. I don't think I really care for your song too much, however I do really like the guitar work! good job!

Produce
I like the beat of it... I'm not one for turntable work too much. nice lyrics... gettin' better. death metal would make me like this more.

Steve Durand
well then... this is nice, and very appropriate. well, the first 30 seconds tell me you're going to win this fight.... which ultimately makes me hate it. stop it! oh, alright dickhead, I like it again. good job! (next time throw some deathmetal in there though).

and then there were two....... hahahaahhahahah!!

The dark side of archeaology
the bass drum is good. I think you can do better deathmetal than that. you did a pretty good job with the vocals though, didn't ya? ok, next fight we'll do "I don't want to be your friend" and this time how about: 50's-60's R&B / deathmetal? I think that's what I want to do anyway. get back to me. dork.

RattPoizon.
This is garbage. I feel dumber for having listened to it. do you even understand the concept of music? you suck. but this milwaukee's best is telling me I LOVE IT!

well, I'm guessing that the Steve Durand guy will probably win. but the big question is: who will win between RattPoizon and The dark side of archaeology? I can't wait!

I'm a tired panda; sorry for the generic adjectives. I enjoyed listening to almost all of these songs. :-)

@e-sp00ns - The instrumentation is pretty boring, though it's mixed well. I don't know why, but I like your vocals for this song. They could easily be more on-pitch, but it doesn't bother me like most singers do. Maybe it's your accent. Whatever. The repeated-word bits are cute. I like the aural viagra instrumentation at 1:03. Nice lyrical comparisons.

Carpetburn - Smooth vocals. Guitar sound/style reminds me of the lighter Hum tracks. Very clean recording and playing. Pleasant. I like the groove at 1:50+; you make synth drums sound interesting. It feels like you've got a few varied sections in here, which I'd dock points for normally, but the relaxing groove holds it together. Nice job!

The Cow Exchange - Me-ish (with a little help from my friends on the female vox). Instrumental here. I just wanted to mess around with slash chords (between the guitar and bass, of course). Then I just wanted to slather synth stuff on it. Then, aliens and food. Two of my favorite topics. So that's what you get. Yes, the vocalist (er, me) says "eudorphins", which you'd think was a mispronunciation of "endorphins", but really it's a combination of eudemon + endorphin. Neurochemical spirits. And the signal's hot.. uh.. intentionally. Yeah. Whatever. DISQUALIFIED!

The Dark Side of Archaeology - Jeremy. Jeremy. Jeremy. Digesting. Perspire. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Is that what you say? Crazy screamy belchy fun. Double kick pedal. Nice noisy breakup ending. Pitch shifting the vocals. Great variety of noises in the background. Minus ten points for leaving the end of your file untrimmed. By the end, my ears feel like they've just been jackhammered.

Fish Sausage - Very clear vocals, very easy to listen to and understand. Good use of vocal overlays (e.g. "you get the idea") and delays (e.g. capsai-sai-sai-sai-cin). Your wording was so clear I had to Google to see where you got them from. Glad to see you didn't just read a wikipedia article verbatim. Instrumentation keeps my knees hopping (I'm sitting down), but I do wish for a little more variety from a 5-minute song. Unless your goal is to hypnotise me and make me smart while I sleep...which I'm totally cool about. Hey, you even typed your lyrics up. You easily win the "DocuCore" subfight over TNUHP.

Produce - Rotator on the vocals. Rotator on the sound effects. Rotate it all! It makes the world go around! Glad that stopped, I'm aurally motion sensitive. I can't understand your words, but they flow well. Cool scratchin'. Hey, I'm starting to understand the words. Make papes? Is this an island survival guide? Hip. Love the rhyming choices.

Rattpoizon - Color me dense (something opaque please) but I'm missing the connection between this song and the title. Feels like I'm changing the channel on indie radio. I like the guitar solo near 3:00. The rest just sort of flies by. Yeah, I'm missing the connection to the title here. Sorry. Enlighten me.

Steve Durand - This is great. A clear mix, realistic drums, brass,.. you've captured the genre so well. Humorous vocal inflections. Hijole! What's the name of that high-pitched bell-sounding instrument on the left? That's been bothering me. I'm jealous, it sounds spectacular. VOTEaroo.

TB - Wow, neat. I like the operatic feel and ol-vinyl sound. Skillful piano playing. Excellent vibrato. Applause on intro/outro were a nice touch. Thanks for posting the lyrics. This had me wondering how long ago capsaicin was discovered/named, which led me this picture of a guy on the Oprah show, sitting on top of.. uh.. is that Oprah? Then I freaked out and gave up. You got the goods?

TNUHP / PHUNT - ARRRGGHHH! Dudes and dudettes. Okay. Please don't go crazy with your panning. It's very right-heavy, which is messing with my ears. Vary it up. Panning instruments toward the left wasn't enough to leave me unannoyed. Instrumentation choices and variation didn't interest me, but I'm probably not your target audience anyway. Hardly felt musical at all. Chanty at best. Small points for varying the vocal accents/effects. Very small points. Here's the thing: your song is bloody long, and it appears very little attention has been paid to production. I mean, you couldn't even be bothered to run some noise reduction or noise gating (~5:35), or edit trip-ups (6:01)? Maybe this song has become too unwieldy for you to even prepare, not to mention me to listen to? Try keeping it shorter and/or sweeter next time. Unlike this review.

*schniff* I think I love you. Seriously. Nicest review ever. And I am NOT a noob. P.S. - oh yeah, baby. There are some submliminal tracks intended to drop yo' ass RIGHT down to Delta wherein upon wakening from such state, you will suddenly find that you are okay with the sensations called "pain" and have an odd penchant for rubber gloves and face masks...slowly constructing my army of minions, yes, yes, oh yea...

Carpetburn: Is this TMK? Nice guitar work for sure. It fits somewhere between good rockin' indie style and cookie-cutter, well, you said, it, peppered with cliche'. It has more than enough good elements to keep me interested, and then the crazy Soweto break. By 3:15 when you're switched back to the original hook, it's lost a lot of steam. Coulda been legendary if you'd kept it tight and polished it up, but it's by no means a bad tune.

One more listen to this one, and I "get" the arrangement more now - that bit late into 2 minutes is sposed to be a bridge or something. It fools me tho because the vocal style stays with the deadpan, so it feels like you're just changing the music under a verse. If you had really switched the style in the bit the whole thing would have come together more quickly for me, I think.

Cow XXXchange: You're a nut, dude, with possibly the only credible use ever of that bass drum patch in the chorus. Same review as always, you've got a great, frenetic tune with about 15 too many instruments on it.

DSOA: Can't argue with Ton Loc. This reminds enough of Clutch that I didn't skip it. It has good energy and OK production. More good guitar work. The piece does just enough to keep me listening all the way thru. On the other hand, it sounds and feels a lot more like a technology demo than a song. Like if you go to the music store and press "play" on one of those all-in-one recorder boxes, this is what they'd use to show you how you can layer piles and pile of shit on and hey check out the bass response on those tiny monitor speakers. Yours for only $469. (Don't forget to ask about the extended warranty)

PDCE: Your usual nutty nintendocore action, but the rapping is on and the lyrics are funny. I'm trying to imagine this commercialized - I'd buy it.

Steve D: Kept getting tempted to skip this when the singing started, but it's funny as hell. Really glad to hear you going out on a limb musically - last week seemed a little down. The "My corazon was captured on the spot" line is hilarious. Your songs never "sound" funny, but every once in a while you really pull it off.

I think you're talking about the chimes It's just a row of little metal bars that bang together when you strum them.

I'm glad you got the humor. I often try to add some humor to my songs either musically or in the lyrics but it usually seems like nobody gets it. Maybe I'm just being too subtle.

Eclectic Spoons: Like some of the music and the lyrics, but would have appreciated a melody for the vocals.

Carpetburn: Carpetburn is one my favourite bands. Love the guitars, love the vocals, love the arrangements. You guys always have great dynamics, but this one seems to lose steam at an inopportune moment or two. Still, I don’t know why Carpetburn isn’t a much bigger Star of Songfight.

Cow Exchange: This blew me away! Love it! I immediately had to go check out your archives, and Tri-State Area left me equally stunned. Apparently The Cow Exchange is a clearing house for copious amounts of catchiness, cuteness and cleverness. You guys rule. And go to hell, Tom Ridge!

The Dark Side of Archeology:

I love it when a plan comes together :D :D

but yeah, about the losing steam, blue said exactly the same thing and I'd love to know which points in the song (in minutes) and why you think it does this. We won a battle of the bands on Sunday (yay!!) so we have some free recording time and I really wanna do this one, but we might as well tighten it up, make it killer. no point in wasting potential right? (we're definitely gonna do our version of 'She Gave Up' as well if you wanna take this opportunity to affect our sound  we welcome new ideas)
