There's a word in some foreign tongue for the phenomena of, having newly learned a word, seeing it everywhere; I found out about Jim O'Rourke a few months ago and now I see him everywhere. He's part of Loose Fur (with Jeff Tweedy), and accordingly has worked with Wilco on A Ghost Is Born and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, he's remixed the Pastels and Tortoise, produced Superchunk, and he was in Sonic Youth for a while, too, before amicably splitting.
He has several solo albums, which are accessibly experimental. The one I'd recommend above all else is Eureka, which has some just great ambience and tracks.
