Yeah, uh, I'm pretty sure that attitude is the antithesis of democracy.
That is the thesis of democracy. Each person respects his own voice and each person imagines that he knows best how to govern. Democracy means taking turns.

I see no reason why a web community can not have everything it has with democracy. The implication is that with democracy we would lose something.

no, jackass, that is anarchy. democracy implies submission to the will of the many. there is no implied leadership or control mechanism in a democracy - it is derived from common cause. a democracy can easily include a despotic leader who does whatever the hell he wants, including repressing the populace, as long as he's freely elected and can be freely unelected.

if songfight were a democracy, you'd be banned by popular vote.

We ARE taking turns.

Narbotic went first. When his turn was up, he left. Two USERS (remember, only users can be owners) took it on. It is currently our turn. When our turn is up, someone else will take over. The length of our term will be determined either by ourselves, in the case that we get tired, or by general concensus, should people get tired of us.

In terms of a community effort, I might point out that other than the improvements and features added by ourselves:

frankie, front, futureboy, charcoal, ken, blue, bjam, and many others have put on live events in this community, with no official permission required or obtained from me or jb.

niveous, blue, phil redmon, sober, johnny, and many others have put on sidefights within this community with no official permission required or obtained from me or jb.

Oust, if you were not such an asshat, I would be totally into listening to your ideas. There is no reason not to evolve this community when the time is right. I certainly do not intend to do this for the rest of my life. I was intruiged by the one post where you sounded sincere, and had specific, rational ideas. But you came here with the goal of destroying this community, not improving it, so it is hard to take that one post to heart.

OK. I won't say goodbye.

HELLO

Saying "Goodbye" was supposed to be your cue to shut up!
Man, you suck at internet psychology.

"Goodbye" is our cue to keep talking, without being interrupted.

"Goodbye" is YOUR cue to shut up.

If you want everyone else here to shut up, the word you're looking for is "Sorry."

actually this was a lame attempt at humor, i actually was just making fun of joshw. and then unrelatedly referring to something that happened a while ago ,that people might remember, to make myself look cool. i dont know, i heard thats how it works. another more obvious way to go was hey guys did you know that like out of a thousand users i'm like 143. i'm songfight older than you.

but seriously otm you suck balls. if all the crap you said was true i would not want to be here.

Hey Oust, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.

No, I'm just kidding. Anyway, though, TuneFlow looks like it'll be democratic, and spud and JB aren't going to be around. Guys, anybody who's with me and Oust, move to TuneFlow with us. SongFight will become decrepit and unused because there's no innovation here, like there is with TuneFlow. Heck--I'm actually going to start making money there! Among all the complete nonsense that most of you are flinging there are a few comments that interest me.

Mostess seems to at least have an attention span for the topic.

Leaf made one of the most concise statements that could possibly lead in the right direction.

Hey, OTM, your idea of an entirely democratic website is interesting. Why not set up an experimental site where this sort of thing could be tried out and see how well it works out? I recommend using the MediaWiki software, as used by Wikipedia, since it already supports a lot of the things you need (collaborative decision-making, incremental page edits, sandboxed backend components, etc.) and so you can see how well this would work.

Of course there's always the Godel incompleteness theorem to deal with, like, what happens when the community as a whole decides to relinquish their community control over the site, as some would argue has happened here (by supporting the Spud/JB hegemony).

(A common analogy of Godel's incompleteness theorem, in case you're not familiar with it: "Could God create a boulder so big that even He couldn't lift it?")

But my point is that if you want to experiment with a fully-democratic site, the best way to do so would be to bring one into being, rather than trying to convert an existing site. If it's clearly better, then people will move over.

Heck, you could even use the domain name songfight.com. The current owners would be happy to sell it to you.

you know, they are saying that Mario Williams from NC State is on the top of most teams' draft boards at this point. Crazy, eh?

i guess the assumption is that Bush just isn't gonna be available.

Another mostly-democratic site you might want to consider as a model is kuro5hin. The comment system is entirely user-moderated, with people who get moderated highly getting the extra power to hide (but never delete!) a comment. Anyone else who has that power can unhide it, too, and then it ends up as a vote between highly-rated users.

Complete democracy, and it works! extremely badly

Believe or not, Bush's stock seems to be falling a little within some camps, just because of standard cynicism and because of his size. This is very stupid, though. Bush is the best player in the draft, and will be taken first... but now, whether he will be taken by the Texans is in doubt. It could be a long shot, but don't be too surprised if the Jets jump up and draft Bush, with the Texans taking Ferguson. (Williams to Saints, Leinart/Young to Titans, if they can make up their damn mind in-house).
