Dub

Post by j$ »

Being a total basshead, I want to emulate some dub using my entirely digital set-up. I was reading an interesting article today on tape saturation and analogue tape delay, which whet my appetite (it's in the new issue of Future Music, ironically :) )

They recommended PSP Vintage Wamer for a good analogue feel compressor. Does anyone know it? Is it any good? Any other equivalent VST or DX plug-ins you could reccommend?

The article suggests mixing down onto cassette tape then re-introducing the music from the tape to digital as well. I understnad how that would squish the frequencies satisfactorily but wouldn't it also introduce an unacceptable level of background noise?

They also said tape delay is 'difficult to achieve using standard digital delay lines' but then fail to explain how one might achieve it, even if it is difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions? I think Ohmforce's delay unit comes close, but it doesn't quite have the same feel.

Any suggestions / reccommendations (short of 'Don't do Dub') would be very welcome.

No, it will introduce an acceptable and enjoyable level of background noise.

PSP Vintage Warmer is one of the plugins that I use on each and every mix. I think it is one of the greatest things out there. I think PSP just makes an warmth one if you just want that side of it and not the compressor.

Kick, snare, bass, electric guitars all get this plug in on them.

hey, i see undesirable has linked to "interruptor.ch" which is the site where i got my dub delay - i've used the "tapedelay" plugin on this page for a few dubby projects:
http://www.interruptor.ch/vst_overview.shtml it's a vst. i don't remember if you can use those.
notable song: "grey dub"

there's also one called karlette that has 4 separate delays:
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Karlette_win/ has it.
i've used that on some tracks too.
notable song: "....living in the basement"
hope this helps.

Thanks everyone! UnDee, that interruptor site is great. And I have downloaded the trial version of Vintage Warmer on ken's reccommendation - though £100 seems a bit steep for such a specific plug-in. Bill that Karlette thing seems to be designed for cubase - will it work with a different sequencer?

well, i use it in audiomulch (which as you may know is not a sequencer) but it seems to behave as a vst should.

VW isn't specific. it's a great swiss-army-knife compression tool.

Unfortunately I can't find the link for Antress Modern Series VST Plugins suite. I use the modern plugins on every single song I make. I love their analoger, compressors and EQs. They have some really unique FX.

Also the Kjaerhus plugins are great. I use them often as well.

i too will post a dub-related comment on this artificially resurrected thread:

izotope trash has an awesome 'trashed delay' component in its buzz module. you have a variety of options for how the delay is trashed, but the tape module in particular is mucho dubby

Meh, why not.

As mentioned above (two freaking years ago), people love Vintage Warmer, but I could never really wrap my head around it. The thing that bugged me most was that, even at completely flat settings, it still colours the low end. I love the idea of multiband saturation, but it never really behaved how I expected. Well, I just discovered Voxengo's VariSaturator, and I'm pretty excited to try it out.
