One Two: Songs n' Votes - The Reviews

Post by brianf »

[EDITOR NOTE: The old poll for this fight has been deleted at Phil's request. You can vote in the new poll here. -gc]

BEST SONGFIGHT EVER!

abom: NICE. I like the way it moves a lot. The lyrics speak at me and to me, I nod in agreeance and compliance. I like your deep singing and your backing vox are swell. great melodies. JAUNTY JAUNTSTAPOSED WITH THE ANTIJAUNT! TOP FIVE!

me: I am dumb and I like poop.

carpetburn: what the! foul! is this just 1 minute of a longer song? does the longer song have anything to do with anything? It feels like I am listening to three consecutive bridges. there's not much for me to grab onto, melody and hook wise. something feels out of tune. I like the energy of the bg vox though.

@eclectic sp00ns: I AM BEING HYPMOTIZED! this is pretty weird. I am scared.

freddielove: I am so into it! it's like Belle and Sebastian without the funny accents and dames! I wish your falsetto parts moved a bit more, melody-wise, because the rest is so very A+ in the melody dept! TOP FIVE

Heuristics Inc: The main thing I like about this is that it was clever to write a song about sudoku. I will listen to it a few times to see if I become a better player. It's all discordant and makes me feel like I am going crazy playing the game. But I don't want to go crazy, I want to have fun and feel smart! This just makes me feel nervous.

Jack in the Corner: This sounds all gross to me. But I still basically like it. Minus points for saying, "eff you" I like swearing too much to be teased by fake swearing. I feel like this needs a real chorus plopped in for payoff.

Johnny Cashpoint: Man I was totally expecting shock to provide a "cock" rhyme. But what ended up is so much better. This is the kind of thing I think about on a daily basis. Super duper song, I love it. TOP FIVE!

Leaf62: Fuck. yes. subject matter = awes. so good. BUT why is the song title just "the one?" since it's one-two, shouldnt you focus more on the totally wonderful second movie or something? opening singing is at odds with the chorus singing. sounds too wimpy! MORE BEEF!

mc paul denyer: I puked from boredom of the beat. PUKE! HEADACHE CENTRAL! your lead vox arent front and centre enough, I can't focus on what you're saying 'cause of that damn repetitive etc.

mc what you had for dinner: The changes are so cool, there's a lot of cool stuff happening, I'm always glad when tonnes of shit is packed into an already truncated format. fun listening and demands repeat business!

melvin: sweet singing and the changes! THE CHANGES! as above, is fun lotsa stuff listening. TOP FIVE!

mezcal monty: bleh, meh. the background stuff is super distracting. The music is really cool but the vox mega turn me off. End just sort of trails off and leaves me shruggin'

tex beaumont: Pssh, zombies are so totally over. I call foul on account of using "one too" rather than "one two" I guess this is a little silly for my taste (which I find surprising.)

stueym: Dude I think you sent in the wrong song.

the hell yeahs: FUCK A BUTT THIS IS HOTT ROX DOPE AWEZO! 100% to the maximum extreme, great ending to the fight! A+++ would listen again. TOP FIVE!

I gotta give it to Abominominous for the solid songwriting.

Great work!!! I liked the Carpetburn song. I'd wear the Leaf 62 t-shirt and join the fan club. I love the fact that HInc did a song on Sudoku. I'm amazed by J$'s song and wish it was longer. And yet again, the Hell Yeahs dominate this bitch.

i didn't spend much longer than a minute on my song and I think I probably shouldn't have sent it in.

abominous: I think this would've grabbed me more if I'd not listened to it first. It's too laid back to kick-start this fight, but it sounds much better after giving all the others a spin. I like the production and it's all nice and relaxed with some simple chords holding it all together. good

Cattle bat and Brian F's: I like this, it's when the ooohs kick in that makes it for me. I just love backing vocals.

Carpetburn: I admit this does sound like part of a longer song, but I promise it isn't (yet, perhaps I should finish it off). The song's about being twelve but that's as strong a title connection yer gonna get from me. I didn't realise it had to be about anything. It was designed to be listened to on a loop; my opinion that 1 listen should never be enough to do a song justice remains intact here, and I think it's fantastic. (having listened to all the other songs I'm also really glad that mine doesn't say "one two" at any point in the song).

@eclectic sp00ns: I'm really (genuinely) sorry, I hate saying this but with lots of your stuff recently I quite like some elements but your voice ruins the overall feel of the track, I'd say ignore that anyway. The background sounds here are really nice, they remind me of ambient afx in a way. your voice changes the whole mood, i'll keep listening though.

Freddielove: I like the fade in intro, I almost wish it would last longer. this is pretty good all round really, but it's when the guitar starts sounding like a sample loop that it gets to me most. I like the way you hold the 'meeeee' forever.

Heuristics Inc: The way this is put together is impressive, seamless production and it all sounds really nice. It's getting to the stage of the fight when I'm getting tired of hearing people sing one two over and over; is this a rule? and where does it say so?

Jack in the corner: I like the way the beat keeps shuffling around and breaking down every now and then, the arrangement here is great. I'm allergic to slap bass.

Johnny Cashpoint: I was liking the way this was going, and then the organy-vocodery middle bit made me like it more. Nice chords and stuff, helped along by the tinny guitar sound (which is a good thing in this instance). really cool

Leaf62: I'm glad you found some space for some stop-starts. why is it that when you're rocking out, and you switch to half time it becomes so much beefier? I don't know but you use the trick to good effect here.

Denyer: is that Macca providing the counting? good rap, good percussive guitar.

What you had for dinner: I like the loops there, the way it switches around 20s and 48s. I don't really like the main vocal but all the other vocal bits are cool. this is pretty big sounding and that aids the track, instead of making it rely on what may not be killer vocals (which are pretty essential in rap usually)

Melvin: Quality stuff. I like what this brought out in you, because I like quick changes and this is like a Melvin medley, a concept which may make j$ nauseous but I think is fucking brilliant. I like the way the first and second section contrast but that they're both really catchy in their own way. guitar squeals, car crashes and shouting, yeah

Mezcal Monty: good lounge solo in the middle. This probably grabs me the least here, but it still has some good dynamic changes. actually, that intro refrain is damn cool, it just loses it's way a bit after the first 10 seconds.

StueyM: ah, I hadn't listened to the PP fight yet, I may have to and this will be the song to beat. the guitars sound really sweet here. Shane McGowan wishes he could still write stuff like this.

Tex Beaumont and the dirty hearts: I love the way you sing at such a breakneck speed this feels like a normal length song, you manage to fit 2 verses and a big old sing-a-long chorus in the same space I managed to do an extended bridge. wOOOooohoooo

Hell Yeahs: cool catchy stuff. I love all the guitar squeals in-between chords. the rock out at the end makes this. one of my favourites, yeah you totally stole this whole fight with that.

there wasn't a bad song there really

You didn't post my song either, but that's because there wasn't one to post. In all the unexpectedness of my weekend I couldn't get my shit together to record ONE MINUTE OF MUSIC. Never was there a SongFighter less deserving of two dollars than myself.
I did, however, have a good birthday, and I hope Phil did the same. :) Rock on, minutemen/women!

It looks like the votes that were recorded before the switch didn't get moved over... so, if you cast a vote and it's not showing up, I guess, cast it again or somethin'...

I haven't voted yet, I'm torn.

Reviews to come!

PS Thanks Yum :) !

In order of decreasing merit:

1. FREDDIELOVE: Just sublime - VOTE!

2. HELLYEAHS: Hell yeah!

3. STUEYM: Does this fit the 1-2 title? Whatever - I like this a lot

4. LEAF: One minute of RAWK. Good

5. MELVIN: Super catchy - top class stuff

6. CATTLEBATBRIANF: Very cool - love the 'buzzy-ness' of it

7. CARRPETBURN: Nice whimsy (and good use of the title) - I don't think this sounds like part of a longer song - I think it works pretty well as it is

8. ABOMINOMONOUS: Nice and jaunty. Love the backing vox.

9. JACKINTHECORNER: Nice groove. I think 'fuck you' would actually sound better than 'eff you' though

10. HEURISTICSINC: This sounds very good - but I really don't want to listen to a song about Sudoku, I'm afraid.

11. @ECLECTICSPOONS: This works surprisingly well and it's not nearly annoying as it could be. I quite like it.

12. JOHNNYCASHPOINT: I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about these sort of things. Great idea and I like the lyrics a lot. I just don't like the sound of the song much

13. FISHSAUSAGE: Is this the Bumblebee Man from the Simpsons?

14. MCWHATYOUHADFORDINNER: This is well done - not my thing though

15. MEZCALMONTY: This one not really doing much for me

16. DENYER: Bloody awful. Though it is impressive how you make Macca sound even more annoying than he normally does.

I am Tex Beaumont. I like my song.

Excellent effort to all concerned - there really was nothing bad here (except for Denyer of course - but what else would you expect from a Victorian?). In a perfect world - all songs would be one minute long.

Ok, here are my reviews.

mezcal - nice groove. unfortunately the backing vox seem to be out of time. i especially like the bass. but that vocal thing is bothering me, and i can't tell what you're saying most of the time.

leaf - leaf should make an album soon. i like the fact that :20 of this is instrumental intro. great guitar, drums, vox - very nice souding. i even like the growly vox. not sure who you're talking to, man, i need lyrics posts.

denyer - wow, that's too repetitive. the rap is pretty good, but mannnn don't repeat "one two" that much. consider: it gets repetitive in a one-minute song!

stuey - i'm amazed that somebody i know can sing like this. it's like something from an old record, and yet i shook this guy's hand. cool. i think part of the challenge was to write a song _called_ "one two" but this is cool anyway.

melvin - i'm not satisfied with something, but i'm not sure what. the solo is cool. maybe this isn't dirty enough (in sound). wait, maybe for such a clean pop-punk sound, it needs to be more singy memorable. but it sounds good anyway.

jack - so this is music j$, singing jack? the instruments seem to be clashing with each other a bit - maybe we need more eq-ing to separate them a bit? also, the bloopy sound is a touch too loud. i do like the funk bass, though.

freddie - lyric posting bonus! i like the haiku bit. hey, good vox in there! now this is a song i'd like to be longer.

abomb - i like the vocal feel. & the backing vox contrast. "it's dumb but true" excellent.

carpetburn - i don't feel like there's enough bass here. is there a bass? this song should have more rear-end support. it's good tho.

hell yeahs - lyric posting bonus! "toofs" ha! well done. i like the fact that the story comes out in this much lyric. good.

j$ - lyric posting bonus! i appreciate the link to "ompalophagus". this is pretty kinky, but i like it anyway. johnny's a weirdo. and we like that. thanks for the quote. that made me laugh. i feel like the effected vox lines should rhyme (separated vs. surplus)...

hinc - i like sudoku and i don't mind singing about it either. i plan to make this a longer song later, make a more trippy remix version... uses tapegerm loops!

tex - lyric posting bonus! hey, the jazz butcher did a song called "zombie love" - similar theme to yours! have you heard it? emphasize the one too 1-2 at the end there, not bad. digging it.

eclectic - i feel like you should investigate vocal effects more. they're too clean for the style.

mcdinner - when the drums change you get a little off beat, eh. this sounds well done, but i have no idea what you're saying.

cattle - brian f? weren't you around years ago but not lately? i like the guitar part, toe tappy.

favorites: leaf, stuey, melvin, jack, freddie, abomb, hell yeahs, j$, hinc, tex

I'll have to decide who to vote for later - lots of good stuff here.

Nope i just added some 12 FU's at Jack's request. Oh and the lyric is an old one of mine (I'm sure Jack won't mind me 'fessing)
HeuristicsInc wrote:j$ -i feel like the effected vox lines should rhyme (separated vs. surplus)...
Interesting you should say that, originally, this section was the first chorus, but it made the song too long so I cut it in half and thinned out the arrangement so that it just pre-figured instead. Originally it did rhyme: "Everyone's a freak, everyone's a weirdo, We should run away and join the circus, feelings for these girls can't be seperated, 1-2-1 for fun, heaven's in ths surplus"

j$

ps it's not "weirdo", it's "eccentric" :)

Oh, Ok then. :)

Yeah, all the words come from my 'Between the Rain' which was a little tribute to that fantastic band (and their '12XU' song), which Jack covered so triumphantly for my hxaro... I might re-record BTR actually, I was listening to it the other day and it's one of those songs (like my 'Dusty Plains') where my lack of technique back in the day hides a very good song, imo.

Anyway enough talking about me (for once!)

Abominominous – Great feel, cool guitar licks. Fun backround vocals. Very complete song & keeper.

Cattle Bat & The Brian F’s – I like the arrangement but seems to be problems, like this hiss throughout the song – is that a kazoo? Backround vox? Neat little part going into ‘One Two One Two’

Carpetburn – Feels kinda disjointed with the loose style of the guitar & vox. Sound more like a part of a song than a complete song.

@ Eclectic SpOOns – Kinda empty, I started singing ‘Kokomo’ along with the rhythm a couple times. Too repetitive & the instrumentation of rhythm, vox & synth pad leaves a lot to be desired

Fish Sausage – Kinda sounds like Opera Man except there aren’t any punchlines. Not my cup of tea.

Freddielove – Nice little fade in. Cool melody & lyrics make the song very uplifting.

Heuristics Inc. – Awesome sounds create a great feel. Ends too abruptly (I know you ran out of time) but this definitely begs for an extended version. Very fun song, keeper.

Jack in The Corner – Very very well arranged, loving the cheesy sounds that are joined by not-so-cheesy ones. Awesome bass & elec piano. Most effective vox I’ve heard in the fight. Keeper & possible vote.

J$ - Nothing really reaching out and grabbing me on this. Vocal effect you use for a couple measures is neat.

Leaf 62 – Incredibly tight. Great whirlwind. I’d have voted for you last year.

MC Paul Denyer – Points for creativity, I wouldn’t have made the connection with ‘All Together Now.’

MC What You Had For Dinner – Pizza and you just reminded me I have leftovers, thanks.

Melvin – Enjoyable, especially the break at :34 & the over-the-top ending.

Mezcal Monty – New collab, hopefully we’ll tighten it up on the next one

Tex Beaumont & The Dirty Hearts – Pretty damn fun. I really like the singalong part.

Steuym – Sounds really good. I haven’t listened to the ‘Peppermint Patty’ fight yet but I assume this was really for that.

The Hell Yeahs – Very solid. But doesn’t do more for me than any other Hell Yeahs song. You may have set the rock bar so high you aren't even able to reach it.

Top 3
1. Jack in The Corner – Vote
2. Tex Beaumont & The Dirty Hearts
3. Abominominous

I just realized I missed the FS entry.

fishs - hmm, the vocals need more presence here. or something. I feel like they're loud enough, but they're not... enough. I know you're singing in foreign languages, but I want the words themselves to be clearer... the instrumentation is pretty neat.

Ok, I am voting for Stuey, rock on. Humorous.
