World Cup '06
Socceroos Qualify For World Cup
Guten tag, Germany!
The Sleeping Giant has awoken!! Australia is going to the World Cup finals for the first time since 1974!
No more will soccer be just a game for wogs, sheilas and poofters, the curse is broken, ding-dong the witch is dead - the Socceroos just kicked some serious arse (after a penalty shoot-out) - see you later U-are-gay.
After years of injustice - we're finally going to get the chance to jam that Jules Rimet cup right up FIFA's arse. Never mind that Australia hasn't been part of South America since Gondwana split apart some 200 million years ago - FIFA have been blissfully unaware of techtonic plate movements in the interim and have insisted that not only do we have to overcome the powerhouses of Pacific football like Solomon Islands and Nauru, but we also have to go up against the likes of Brazil and Argentina just to get a run - whereas all losers like England and the USA have to do to get into the finals is beat clowns like France or Canada.
Well as of tonight it's all changed. As of tonight, Australia is the 3rd best team in South America and we're going to freaking Germany!!! And those dirty, stinking, cheating U-are-gayans are going home a disgrace to their country, a disgrace to themselves and a disgrace to their sport - and maybe they'll think twice next time before spitting on the proud, firm-bodied and noble young men who wear the green and gold.
Forget the cricket, forget the bloody Wallabies - it's bandwagon jumping time - go the Socceroos!

This is clearly a massive distortion of the truth. When did you play Argentina or Brazil in your qualifying campaign? You qualified through Oceania, who play the 5th best placed South American team in a single two-leg play-off.Caravan Ray wrote:>we also have to go up against the likes of Brazil and Argentina just to get a run
Congratulations on getting there, mind. If you don't do so well, will you go quiet, like you have done about last saturday's Rugby result?

Well that was a pretty unlikely thing! Even if Tim Cahill is dreamy.
Aren't y'all getting moved from South America into Asia after this cup? Just in time, too, since China and Japan and all those tiny little Arab nations are all getting their collective acts together, so it won't be easy to qualify from that region either. I can't wait until the year 2872 when you chaps finally end up as part of CONCACAF.

All I (and I suspect many other Australians) know about soccer is that every 4 years a group of blokes we've never heard of put on green and gold shirts and get beaten by a country we've never heard of - and we get told that we missed out on the World Cup again.
4 years ago it was Uruaguay and this year it was Uruaguay again - so obviously there is some sort of conspiracy there - and as a result, Uruaguay is now replacing England or New Zealand in our public conciousness as being our "traditional rival".

I didn't start it. To us, Uruguay are the New Zealand All Blacks of world soccer:john m wrote:(Wow, that's some serious Uruguay hate.)
URUGUAY will push back the kick-off of the opening match of the World Cup qualifiers against Australia in an attempt to force the Socceroos to miss their flight to Sydney from Montevideo...sources within the Uruguayan Football Association ... saying the reason for the change was to "hinder the return of the Australians"...
...This is the latest case of bad blood between the two ruling bodies that stretches back to the Australians' arrival in Montevideo for the 2001 World Cup qualifier...the Socceroos were spat at and jostled by thugs paid by a man associated with Tenfield, the omnipotent media company which exerts enormous influence on the sport in Uruguay...

For once now that Team USA is seeded the TV networks here have clued up and we are getting every match live, uninterupted on stupendous HD (ESPN, ESPN2, ABC). I even went to the beer store and bought some imported Carlsberg so that my son and wife can start drinking in time for kickoff 9:00am EDT Saturday morning.
Me I bought some nice strong weissebier and am supporting Trinidad & Tobago so I can cheer on Scotland (Go google it LOL)

Well done Socceroos and the early contender for "Jammiest Bastards of the Tournament" with that inspired 6 whole minutes of effort after being worn done over the other 84....but persistence and resilience do pay off.
Make sure they don't let that Japan manager near anything sharp in the next 24 hours though until the anti-depressants take effect!!!

That would be Brazil, wouldn't it? Which would make your comment dangerously close to racismCaravan Ray wrote:This soccer stuff is easy - bring on the next bunnies.
having watched all but 1 of these games, and with Brazil and France still to play, have to say the most attractive football to date has just been played by the Czech Republic. Don't fancy their chances in the long term, but that was a breath of fresh air after some dire matches, from a neutral's point of view. The USA weren't bad, maybe lacking an extra dimension, but I look forward to watching the Czech's next game more than I do England's.

I might give the 'beautiful football' nod to Italy for those ridiculous passes throughout the game. Ghana deserved much better than that end result, but Italy was smooth in an overly physical game. Also the Czechs' victory over a weak US showing, albeit promising and decisive, is not as impressive as Italy's hard-fought victory over a surprisingly spirited Ghana side.
Italy/Ghana should have been 2-2, though. Terrible officiating; both non-calls should have been PKs.

I wonder why "dreamy" got censored, though. It's not like I have dreams of Wikipedia or anything.
