I can't quote!

Post by Paco Del Stinko »

I must display my stupidity for all to see. Although someone was nice enough to mention in a PM how to use quotes properly, I am unable to turn Quote: into Joe Mama said: What simple procedure am I not performing? What is wrong with me? What?

I'll be glad to delete this post afterwards if I am the only doofus unable to do what any 3 year old probably can. Thank you for your time and patience and I don't blame anyone if you shake your head and walk away. Peace.

I can do this -
What is wrong with me?
I can't change the bold word Quote: above the dialog box into a bold name of whom I'm quoting. Like, into Bill Community wrote:

Thanks again, esp. KA, and if everyone lines up I'll gladly run the gauntlet.

After the word quote in the initial tag, you have to put an equals sign and then the name you're quoting in quotation marks. See King Arthur's example above, minus the spaces.

Must be true as I'm sure that I read it somewhere. Thanks again, and I apologize for being such a dolt. Instead of deleting this, I will leave it up as a badge of stupidity, hopefully one that I won't wear again too soon! Thanks.

Doesn't the big "Quote" button on the right hand side of every post do it automatically for you???

It does now. Thanks. I've asked some elementary questons here at Songfight! and have always received excellent assistance. I am somewhat embarrassed by this, but appreciate the help.

Actually, when you're in the "reply" screen (in Netscape, at least) and move the cursor over the "Quote" button, it does NOT give you a template for this particular trick. The URL button does, the font colour and size ones do, but the Quote one doesn't tell you about the "=name" trick.

Er, what I meant was if you click on the 'quote' button from another message then it fills out the reply form showing you how it's done. I didn't mean the quote button that's part of the reply form.

That's what the "Edit Post" buttons are for. Go back in time and change your question to embarrass everyone else.
