Where are they now?
How about a thread for when you're listening to a fight in the archive, and you hear some song you like, so you go to the artist's archive page, but see that they only entered once or twice, so you Google the artist's name and find their home page? Or other similar scenarios?
Anyway, this guy did a good song for the "Hold My Calls" fight, then never entered again. He's in Atlanta and has an album out at the moment. Some of his stuff on his myspace page is alright.

I always wondered what happened to Lin-Z who entered once for Mountain Home and Three Hole Punch who entered before I turned up. Neither seem to have any kind of web presence
shame (unless they are closely guarded secrets of a regular fighter)
I wish I could find out more about Banjo-V, whose "Experimental Fashion" is monumental.

Much loved British actor and entertainer taken from us far to young by lung cancer....Roy Castle. His Wiki entry is pretty cool but of course I can't link to that!WeaselSlayer wrote:Who was/is Roy Castle?

Collin is hard to keep track of since he has a habit of letting his domains expire and then not seeming to give a shit about it. At least breakerbreaker.org is still around, though I don't see any news about upcoming shows or anything. Looks like they've put a few albums out since the last time I checked though.
On a related note, I find it funny that a few folks (well, one really loud one) seem to operate under the strange premise that Spud and JB wrested control from Collin, and are illegitimately operating it, when really Collin only ran it for two years (6/19/00 - 6/10/02) when the rest of the time (6/28/02 - present) was Spud and JB, and they show no signs of stopping yet. They've run it for more than twice as long as Collin did, and have kept it vibrant that whole time.

Who's that? I mean, if he's that loud, I think I would have heard him.fluffy wrote: On a related note, I find it funny that a few folks (well, one really loud one) seem to operate under the strange premise that Spud and JB wrested control from Collin...
Yeah, but he also invented it, so how about giving some credit where it's due.fluffy wrote: ...and are illegitimately operating it, when really Collin only ran it for two years (6/19/00 - 6/10/02) when the rest of the time (6/28/02 - present) was Spud and JB, and they show no signs of stopping yet. Songfight's Roy Castle is a guy from Liverpool by the name of Martin Chitty. He made his return to Songfight during "Don't Think I Don't Miss You" under his real name.WeaselSlayer wrote:Who was/is Roy Castle?

Oh, I certainly credit him with being the first to have a well-known regular Internet music contest where everyone writes a song for the same title (all of those aspects had been around before but Collin was the first to pull them together AFAIK). But he lacked follow-through.frankie big face wrote:Yeah, but he also invented it, so how about giving some credit where it's due.
All I'm saying is that Spud and JB have been running it for way longer, much more reliably, with many nifty innovations to keep the community together (multiple fights per week, art submissions, a decent forum which is an integral part of the community, bringing live shows and side fights into the "official" view, and probably other things I'm missing) and they deserve credit for that too.
Keeping something running is a bigger task than starting it.

Tell that to Thomas Edison! (I mean, I'm sure someone has made a better lightbulb than his, but still...) Goofy example aside, I don't think that statement is necessarily true.fluffy wrote: Keeping something running is a bigger task than starting it.
And some of the "innovations" you listed aren't necessarily improvements, in my opinion. Not trying to start an argument, just saying that there are varying opinions on the matter.

Websites aren't inventions which form self-sustaining industries run by automated robots. They're more like running a marathon. Any idiot can run the first mile. It's the other 27 which make it impressive.
Back on topic: Whatever happened to NiL? Last I heard they broke up, though you wouldn't know it looking at their website (which hasn't been updated in years).

He deserves the credit for starting the site. Although whether he invented the "songfight" I dunno... I think you and I were doing our little challenges around the same time SF was starting up, and we sure weren't the first. I mean, we were inspired by a story about Fountains of Wayne and how they came up with "She's Got a Problem"-- it was a challenge title written on a napkin at a restaurant.frankie big face wrote:Yeah, but he also invented it, so how about giving some credit where it's due.
But yeah, most of the cool things about Song Fight are Collin's fault, right down to the picture of a guitarist bashing a trumpeter over the head. His was an inimitable tenure, but you know Spud and I, we just can't resist fuckin' with things. And we believe that is in keeping with the best spirit of the site as Collin instigated it.

blippity blop ya don’t stop heyyyyyyyyy
They are currently holding auditions for a new bass guitarist. Perhaps it is a different NiL, though.fluffy wrote:Back on topic: Whatever happened to NiL? Last I heard they broke up, though you wouldn't know it looking at their website (which hasn't been updated in years).

That's a completely different NiL. It seems they did break-up...or at least became "defunct". (I love how they state that the day that they become defunct is Feb 30, 2003.)

Yeah, I'm not saying he invented the concept, just the site. Fluffy said he "ran it for two years," leaving out the fact that he also made it and I think there's a difference. You know The Beach Boys have been going strong forever without Brian Wilson, but few would say they deserve greater accolades than he for "keeping it going."jb wrote: He deserves the credit for starting the site. Your smiley face in the previous paragraph makes me think you're cool with this conversation, but then this paragraph makes me wonder. You and I have had enough conversations about this for you to know where I stand on the various changes you and Spud have made. I've made more detailed pleas with Spud to return to one fight and I appreciate the couple of weeks that you have. And I do think the recent unpredictableness of well...everything is definitely in keeping with the original spirit of Song Fight. The 11-fight week was actually pretty cool, even if I've only made it through 3/11 of the songs. Anyway, back to the topic.jb wrote:But yeah, most of the cool things about Song Fight are Collin's fault, right down to the picture of a guitarist bashing a trumpeter over the head. SMU still appear around here on occasion. They also use the name Cheap Bastards.

High Density also frequently pop in. Future Boy & Mob01d will put out new tunes on occasion. They've also entered under some other psuedonyms including The Loose Laces. Future Boy can often be found at SF's cousin twice removed, Remixfight.
