I would just like to make the general announcement that following this fight I will most likely not be listening to people's songs that aren't tagged properly. It's one thing to listen to the stream on my PC, it's another to have to search through and re-label everything so that I can move it to my MP3 player. I know we're not going to get everyone to agree on an Album name for their track, but if you can't at the very least tag your MP3 with the song title, I'm not going to go through the extra work to listen to it. If you don't care whether I hear your song, then disregard, if you do...well then, help a brotha out.

so far i've had 27 entries, and done 26 reviews, one of the best things about songfight is the reviews, i feel thats helped me no end, the general feedback and even the 'your song is crap' statements, it all helps and its all good, i download all the songs every week, reformat them all to 128kbs, equalize them all to an average of 95db's and retag them all to suit my player, then burn them all to a cd for posterity (including the album art to boot), this takes me roughly 30 - 45 minutes...

I consider this putting a little back in to say thanks for persons having to listen to my crap songs every week...

I may be a fanboy but jeez! get over yourself KMS! is it really so much trouble?

Reviews to follow shortly!

It's a lot more trouble for me to go back and re-format everyone's entries than it is for each person to format their own entry correctly in the first place. People review songs as a courtesy, they shouldn't have to jump through hoops to do so.

Rone, look at "Help and How To". There's something there for you. Heed it or ignore it, just don't be offended. I mean well.

But remember dude, they're giving you the same courtesy. If you stop reviewing tracks that don't have proper tags, expect folks to stop reviewing your tracks for some equally arbitrary reason.

Everyone's acting like I'm being vindictave about it or something. I'm not. I'm just saying that when I go to transfer songs to my MP3 player, songs that aren't tagged are easily lost and I'm not inclined to go out of my way to cross-reference the site to see which ones I missed. And I'm not sure why someone would refuse to make everyone's life easier by taking 5 seconds to tag their song. If someone asked me to do something that would be no skin off of my back but would make it easier for them to listen to my song, I wouldn't hesitate to do it. The first time I submitted my track volume was low in comparison to everyone else's so I've been sure to normalize the volume every submission since then. That is certainly more involved than tagging a song, but I do it for the benefit of the listener(s).

Heck, if it's really that difficult for someone to do then send me the song and I'll tag it for you. But when it comes time to move songs en masse to my portable device, some often get lost in the shuffle.

Good fight here dudes. Since it sounds like there's some good stuff here, and I don't have any homework to do as is, I might just have some reviews cooked up sometime soon.

Personally I agree with KMS... not that I'm going to stop reviewing people because they don't have their song tagged, but i do usually spend a while adding id3 tags to the songs so i have the right band name there so I know who i'm talking to when i do reviews.

I also often put production notes into my ID3 tags... though more often than not we're very drunk and so end up putting things of a rather more immature scale. :P

It does help when songfight's file naming conventions can be confusing, especially when your listening to old fights.
I am a failure as a dave and as a human being!!

if you review one song or all, you are still giving something back.

if you miss somebody, and they really care about your opinion, they may ask you for a review. and when they ask, you'll know who they are and go listen to their song if you feel like it. but there's no need to browbeat yourself about reviewing every song, or making ID3tags conditional for a review.

i'm not trying to discourage reviews. just don't get frustrated over writing them. leave the frustration for the receiving parties.

I do dl the songs initially using the podcast into my Juice podcaster. However, from there I have to get it onto my Napster-To-Go player, and the one serious drawback to Napster is that they don't make it easy to get stuff on their players through anything other than Napster, which means importing all of the SF tracks into Napster and then dragging all of those into my MP3 player, which is where the link in the chain usually breaks.

I haven't seen anything in Juice that allows you to dl directly to an MP3 player...am I missing it?

well, your mp3 player is probably listed as a disk drive in My Computer/Finder. set juice to use a SongFight folder on that drive as its download destination.

I listened to the songs that I did manage to get onto my MP3 player last night. Some things that stood out:

Seamus Collective: I think I was absent during the time when I might have read who you are a collective of, but I remember seeing all the wins you had during the AAW and thinking "sheesh, somebody must be friend-flooding big time". Anyway, having now heard your entries the last couple weeks I see that must not be true because you all are amazing. Loved the song this week.

Steve Durand: (Steve's the horn one, right?) There are a lot of great, technical musicians lurking around here. For some reason in my mind though, someone who can bust out several layers of brass get's an extra layer of respectibility for me. I don't know what it is, maybe it's my soft spot for vintage jazz and big band, but even when the song itself doesn't knock my socks off, the different layers and tectures of your songs always leave me impressed and humbled. This week was no exception.

Eclectic Spoons: I found myself liking this song more than I expected. In general I would always say synthesized vocals like the ones used here are a bad idea, but in this song they worked for me.

Booty et al: Loved the music this week. The vocals were hit and miss. Mostly hit, but I agree w/ whoever said earlier that the 'finger to the lips' part didn't work for them. Lyrically...eh.

Rone Rivendale: With all the talk about you this last week listening to this song was sort of like going into a movie with the lowest of expectations. When you hear something dissed as badly as this was, you can't help but leave thinking "well that wasn't so bad. I guess I'd like to hear from you what you are attempting in your songs and what your impression is of how well you pull it off. I think it's hard to judge without knowing what's being attempted, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I definitely hear improvement. As for the vocals, it might just bd a matter of training your ear, which is something that just comes with time I think. Do you hear where you are off vocally?

Okay, that's all I remember off the top of my head except there was one other band w/ male/female vox that, during the chorus, sounded like a Yacht Rock Revival :-)

I'll try to post more later.
