Billy's Little Trip
This one isn't quite my cup of tea. Cool guitar work, vocals are ok. Doesn't do a whole lot for me.
Civil Offense
Ummm......errr......uhhhhh......I guess this is what the painting sounds like? New York and forboding and stuff? I don't know what to say. Maybe I'm not advanced enough to understand
Jonathan Mann
Museum song. Unique take on it. I kind of heard the "museum" lines as the chorus of the song. Those lines seemed to work better than the "shelton with sunspots" lines for the hook. Pretty well done, although some of the singing was kind of pitchy.
King Arthur feat. Wages feat. King Arthur
vocals sound....odd. Kinda off, but can't really say that, but then I can...? The middle part is my favorite. Kinda wish that was run through the whole song to be honest.
Masterhyde (me)
When I decided to enter a song fight I decided before the topic was announced. When I saw the title I almost chickened out. But I mulled it over and got an idea for the music and decided to put it down. Couldn't think of much for the topic, so I just made something up. The chorus was kind of an afterthought after everything else was done.
Melvin
This one is pretty good. "paint a window in your heart" is a pretty good lyric. "This is just a work of art" is good too. Music is ok, just not my thing.
Mike Lamb
I had a hard time catching the lyrics on this one. The falsetto is.....I don't know. Not sure it worked for me. Guitars were cool though.
Minty Handy
Interesting music. Vocals are kind of odd but they work. Another unique take on the title I never would have thought of as well. I wasn't terribly impressed but I liked it more than I care to admit since I was dissapointed when the song ended...! It could have used another verse you know. End around mid 2 minutes or so. 1:30 was waaaay too short. Pretty nice song.
Papercut Brigade
I like the chorus here. Well done. In fact, the whole song is pretty well done. Vocals sound a little loud. Turned down a tad and they'd be fine. Good turn of topic with "Shelton with sunspots on your skin/in your eyes". This may be the smoothest transition of the title with lyrics of the bunch. This doesn't sound like you were trying to fit the title in. Possible vote here.
Ross Durand
The voice sounds like....something....can't put my finger on it. Nice song, kinda odd with the topic turn. Made me think of "Major Tom" for some reason....
Super Dragon X of Metamystiks Inc. with TK on the beat
Nice delivery, good production. Interesting take about going around New York. Nice rhyme structure as well and the beat works for this one. This is a possible vote
Sunnydale, Ohio
I like the feel of this one although the timing seems pretty loose at spots. Some of the lyrics are almost rapped but not quite, but the vocal works. Possible vote
The Devil Lays Eggs
Unique vocal on this. Found myself wondering how this would sound over music. Definitely stayed on topic with a take I would never have dreamed of. Maybe I'll be able to come up with topics like this when I grow up. Possible vote here. Watch out, I may have to remix this one...
The Disciples of Beer
Really odd vocals. I like the "tale" aspect though. The whole "castle" thing trips me out. For some reason this reminds me of "Monster Mash" with the differences in the vocals/voices used in the song. "An albatross named Hector"?? It's a possible just for putting that in!
Thornberry
Starts kind of slow but picks up. Kind of a "power ballad". Pretty good job on the production. The reverb on the vocals seems to work for me despite me not being a big fan of it. The whole almost etherial feel warrants it. The build up reminds me of "Purple Rain" for some reason. I know, I'm insane...
For my final 3 I have:
Papercut Brigade
Super Dragon X of Metamystiks Inc. with TK on the beat
The Devil Lays Eggs
Hmmm...this is a tough one.......and Papercut Brigade wins it! Super Dragon X was intense competition, but the way the chorus flowed pushed the Brigade over the top for me.

Well thanks, Masterhyde. My biggest regrets are always mastering and production of my songs. I don't have the best recording stuff like some kids on here, but I enjoyed the lyrics of this one. I think sometimes I get too puffed up on my own lyrics and boost the vocals too high in the mix to make sure everyone hears 'em.
Also, like another review mentioned, I should've ditched the double vocals for some good harmony. I caught that right after I sent it in too. Oh well. I appriciate all the pointers and hope to learn from them. I guess that's what this is all about.
Well, either that, or the hokey pokey.

Billy’s Little Trip:
Guitarhead (Gh): Nirvana wannabe
Drumhead (Dh): heard of daman albarn’s new side project? Its all afro-punk stuff, this guy would like it.
Losthead (Lh): I like the cool guitar sound he’s got going. Second vocals could use some work but that guitar sound is pretty damn sweet.
Dh: I don’t like that guitar sound.
Gh: seriously, he sounds like Kurt Cobain all blissed out
Civil Offense:
Gh: this sounds like a bad sci-fi movie
Dh:is this the dungeon level of Zelda? I could see myself killing bats to this
Gh: how is this Shelton with sunspots?
Lh: it’s a soundscape of the city. Based on Georgia O’Keefe’s painting. I think the harmonica and the movement of it is pretty cool and representative of it.
Gh: was he high when he did this?
Dh: that was the worst head-trip I’ve ever experienced.
Dh’s lil bro: was that even a song?
The Devil Lays Eggs:
(Gh and Dh laugh)
Gh: I’ve heard better soundtracks in home movies (editors note: he may have meant the TV show)
Dh: there’s no real flow to the accapella
Lh: I don’t really like the lyrics. I wish it had some snaps. It would make this ten times better. And make it flow so much better.
Gh: just stop it.
Lh: It’s done.
Dh: I wish it was zydeco.
Lh: ?
Dh: it just needs more instruments.
Disciples of Beer:
Lh: I don’t like that first lead guitar the distortion doesn’t sound right
Gh: sounds like tenacious d
Lh: hes talking about a computer… I think
Dh: not too original a bit too much like jack black.
Gh: I like it, hes trying too be funny. I like tenacisou d.
Lh: That part around 2 minutes the lyrics don’t quite fit. hah “I am as I is/ but I aint as I act” I like that, but what’s that supposed to mean?
Dh: It’s like I want it to be tenacious d but its some cheap imitation.
Jonathan Mann:
Dh: I don’t like how they say “mu-ZZEE-um” you know what change it. It annoys me.
Lh: but Dh, we need to listen to it all
Dh: dude the voices really annoy me, I don’t care, change it!
(editors note: I actually liked this song guys, sorry bout that. Your harmonizing is a bit grating but it’s a good catchy song still.)
King Arthur:
Gh: grunge is dead
Lh: no its not
Dh: theres nothing new to it
Gh: exactly we’ve heard this before. its like eddie vedder fronting alice in chains.
Lh: that sounds cool
Dh: when it speeds up it really makes the drums sound fake. It just makes it more apparent.
Lh: well, I like it. The voice could use some help, but it fits. It flows really well.
Gh: I like the guitar sound
Dh: its like reggae but bad drums sounds
Gh: I don’t like the vocals
Lh: I do, its got edge
Masterhyde:
Gh: I like the keyboard
Dh: I like good hip hop.
Gh; this should win. Best so far.
Lh: I agree it reminds me of the tom tom club.
Dh: I love the chorus. Catchy as hell. Fun simple, it sounds like hes not trying too hard. Keep it simple.
Gh: good song possible vote.
Melvin:
Lh: where did this keyboard come from.
Dh: sounds like the singer from pavement.
Gh: like the guitar but the lyrics don’t work for me.
Lh: reminds me of third Eye blind, and I love that.
Gh: cool keyboard in the background.
Lh: the harmony vocals sometimes don’t work especially when they go into the higher register in the verses. Okay I like the keyboard in the end.
Gh: lyrics in the verse could use some help, but other than that great.
Mike Lamb:
Dh: so far so good.
(long silence)
Lh: cool lyrics except the Shelton in sunspots fit in sounds forced lyrically and vocally its rough,
Gh: guitar work isn’t all that great. Its bluesy but it sounds like he cant pull it off. Sounds like he’s not feeling it.
Lh: I wish the drums would come in.
Gh: rather boring solo.
Dh: something with brushes on drums would have helped.
Minty Handy:
Gh: smirks and laughs
Dh: interesting
Lh: I think its cool.
Dh: sounds like a barney song. Really simple and kid-is. It’s fun though.
Lh: catchy in that way.
Papercut Brigade:
Lh: this is gonna be good. I like the whole pop-rock aspect
Dh: Its good jangle pop.
Gh: this is the kind of stuff I’d play on my college radio show.
Lh: this sounds like a full band. Really good. Solo sounds okay but I like the rhythm guitar sound for the rest of the song a lot.
Dh: vote possibility.
Ross Durand
Lh: this reminds me of the ballad of Bilbo Baggins by Leonard nimoy
Gh: yea
Dh: its catchy. Nice tambourines.
Gh: the guitars fit the sound really well.
Lh: Psychedleic folk type stuff. Enjoyable.
Sunnydale Ohio:
Gh: I actually was improving the lead guitar on this.
Lh: we only used two overhead mics on the drums and im pretty happy with the sound we got.
Dh: I don’t think the “home” does it really. It needs some more oomph.
Lh: well we recorded and wrote this whole thing in one day really. We had limited time to work together. Not our best.
Gh: I think it sounds pretty good.
Dh: I’d vote for it.
Dh’s lil bro: I wouldn’t.
Superdragonx:
Gh: stupid name
Lh: “I rhyme so tight I give the dykes erections” ….. ahahhahahh that’s great.
Dh: he reminds me of the roots.
Lh: is that a girl in the background
Dh: really well mixed. Sounds like Jay-Z.
Gh: I’ve heard better free-style rhymes.
Lh: But he’s got constraints with the song title. I think its really well done.
Dh: vote possibility.
Gh: retract what I said. Its good.
Thornberry:
Lh: Its six minutes it could take a while.
Gh: slow start. It bores me. You know, his avatar, fits his vocals. Real dramatic
Lh: I like this mix cool reverb.
Gh: He’s got vocal talent, but his songwriting so far isn’t all that inspiring.
(song hits 2:30)
Gh: that took way too long to get the rest of the band in. the bass is a bit too overmodulated.
Lh: I like it. Its all Pink Floyd-ish. Pretty good song if you ask me.
Gh: I don’t like it. He wears capes.
Lh: It’s kinda like that decemberists “the island”
Gh: except gay
Dh: he was pretty hardcore in his reviews so I guess we’re harder on him.
Gh: still don’t like that bass sound would be better if it wasn’t so modulated.
Dh: his voice doesn’t fit the music. He’s overdoing the electronic drum fills. The drummer from pink floyd kept it simple when he played he should follow that.
Gh: I don’t like the ending.
Dh: its anticlimactic.
So recap:
Lh: We were watching the Texas football game while doing these reviews so Gh may have been a bit harsh. Oh, and these are all just initial reactions, not so much real reviews. This is not really how I would normally do these. But it was fun to do. Plus I thought it was needed to bring in my bands opinion since we entered as a band.
In the end we really liked Masterhyde for making some damn good fun hip hop, superdragonx for having great flow and beats, Papercut Brigade for making good rock-pop.
Dh: regardless of wether we win or lose, Texas is still the best state!
Lh: ?
Gh: ?

Conrgrats, Superdragon, &c. Welcome to Songfight. Now make more good shit, yo.
And thanks to the two mystery votes my experimental crap got, whomever you are. And thanks for the entertaining reviews as well, y'all.
And, uhhh, Happy Preemptive New Year to all and sundry. Aside for the kids out there: getting married on a major holiday may seem like a good idea at the time, but don't do it (if things fall apart, well...).

Better late than never, LOL. Everyone did a great job. Congrats Dragon.
King Arthur feat. Wages feat. King Arthur - Nice collaboration. I happen to like your vocal sound. It makes it clear that you are not the same old tired sound. I like the changes in the song too. A few things didn't quite mesh perfectly, but again, it keeps the unique feel that I like. Good job guys.
Civil Offense - Movie music, pretty cool. I liked the harmonica because it reminded me of Wall Of Voodoo or some movie that Matt Dillion would star in.
The Devil Lays Eggs - Kind of has an old sailor sea shanty vibe. Great voice.
The Disciples of Beer - Starts off sounding like Bon Scott then changes to other British voices. Interesting performance, it's the lyrics in this song that I loved.
Jonathan Mann - Intro lyrics start out almost silly, but then turns into a nice kids story. I like the vision for the lyrics in this song. Nice acoustic rhythm.
Masterhyde - I really don't care for rap, but being a Song Fight member, I listen with an open mind. Guess what, I like this song. It's not rock and roll, but it's a nice little story about the Shelton seen through your mind. Good job.
Melvin - Guitars and drums, hell yeah.....wait, keys? This song rocks. Nice vocals, nice story, performed great, recorded great and mixed damn near perfect.
Mike Lamb - I love the pie'anna. Another nice story as seen through your mind. I love the guitar in this song, very soulful. Good job.
Minty Handy - The lyrics are clever and cute. Nice little ditty. This song makes me smile like a ...umm, smiling thing. Great song Minty.
Papercut Brigade - I really liked this song. Great rock! UV protection is important, but I'd rather not hear a service announcement in a great rock song like this. Great performance, nice job on the recording too. Deffinatly my top 3 favorites.
Ross Durand - Very fun classic rock. Very Zappa'esk with a side order of one of those old British bands like the turtles or something. Very good performance and recording. Nice song Ross.
Sunnydale, Ohio - This is what I consider to be real rock and roll music. Great guitars, great vocals, great drums and a bass player working with the drummer. The lyrics are cool too. Great job Sunnydale.
Super Dragon X of Metamystiks Inc. with TK on the beat - Nice beat. Cool sounds. I'm not a good judge of what good rap is, so I won't judge. But I will say it sounds like every other rap song I hear on the radio, not that it's a bad thing, just saying this song fits right in and could be on the radio.
Thornberry - I enjoyed the production of this song. So many layers I lost count. Very good song in my opinion. It plays much better on my car or living room system then head phones. I honestly believe this is one of the best rock songs productions I've heard on Song Fight. If you did the recording, mixing and mastering yourself, then you my friend should do it for a living because I've been around the studio enough to know I'm not good at it, but you are as good, if not better, than professionals I've worked with. I love 70's rock and this is it right on the money with a 2006 upgrade. Great Job all the way around!

Wow Thank you!
Yes I did do everything on my modest set up I have here at home. I appreciate that comment very much because I do plan on doing this for a living

Not surprisingly, I normally write and record children's music. I guess I need to filter that out some more, eh? Heh.Minty Handy:
Gh: smirks and laughs
Dh: interesting
Lh: I think its cool.
Dh: sounds like a barney song. Really simple and kid-is. It’s fun though.
Lh: catchy in that way.

I understand. I tend to do that too. Either that or put the vocals too low since I can hear them anyway.beatlebrent wrote:Well thanks, Masterhyde. My biggest regrets are always mastering and production of my songs. I don't have the best recording stuff like some kids on here, but I enjoyed the lyrics of this one. I think sometimes I get too puffed up on my own lyrics and boost the vocals too high in the mix to make sure everyone hears 'em.
And I really do like your turn of topic. Some may think it's silly, but we had to write to "The Shelton with Sunspots"! I know I couldn't think of much so I wrote about being at a hotel and sort of shoehorned in the sunspots part. You managed to actually integrate sunspots into the song. Wish I had of though of that.
