Bands that Embody the Song Fight Spirit

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

I know the majority of you HATE prog rock, but I just have to nominate Liquid Tension Experiment. 4 incredible musicians wrote and recorded their first instrumental album in - a week! That's totally an AAW right there.

def GBV... they have a lot of songs that are around the song fight average length, too.

I'll add that Weird Al recorded his first hit in a college dorm bathroom with one mic. Very SF. Also, many of his songs are about food.

Reggie and the Full Effect: One guy playing all the parts himself pretending to be three different bands per record.

Ben Folds: Have you heard all the covers this guy plays/records? Also, he seems to like to collab.

oh yeah.. have you heard Fear of Pop? I'm not sure why he did that other than to entertain himself, but it is awesome.

Will Oldham: collaborations with tortoise, david pajo, matt sweeney, pj harvey, bjork/matthew barney, johnny cash, jason molina, bill callahan. the list goes on! he produces mountain goats, too. and releases stuff all the time. much of it lo-fi folk rock.

How about Pearl Jam?

They release like fifty gazillion versions of the same album, and a whack of other crazy things befitting of a songfighter.

Uh... is there some research nerd who wants to verify/deny my claim?

PEARL JAM.

(I find them kinda boring though. Is that one of the criteria? <ducks>)

I would like to submit Brian Eno - his Oblique Strategies, if applied to making a song, are not that far off from our 'random' song titles here at SongFight.
Also he is quite geeky, like many of us.

I think collabbing with Shatner might be Song Fight. But come on now, collabbing in general isn't Song Fight! Get real! Collabbing has been done forever, and isn't some amazing thing the Internet invented.

Why is that a SF trait? Aside from covers, which I think happens in the real world like grass grows, I'm not aware of these "gazillion versions" being a SF trait.

I think it's their anti-establishment, do what we want how we want to do it trip I'm trying to refer to without actually spending anytime researching it to prove it and instead relying on stuff I read years ago that is merely a foggy haze and damn it I just thought they might fit the mold of a thread JB is actively yakking in so that's how.

Eels - E's got a weird sense of humor. He's basically a one man band (though he had a drummer for a while). He uses some weird instrumentation at times. I think he'd fit right in at Songfight.

It seems we're down to this: there are bands out there that are made up of humans and some Songfighters are known humans. Also, there are artists that write songs and some Songfighters write songs. And then the bands that also eat, sleep less than recommended, imbibe various substances, obsess about sex and get in trouble. Have we left anyone out?
Maybe we should try to find bands that don't share Songfight traits. It'll be a shorter list.

I love that JB created this thread :)

And I'm just going off here. Pay no attention.

Thanks for ensuring I won't get any work done today, enjoying that mental image. (Not the tattoo, but what it's on)

Btw, the following are all SONGFIGHT (sorry if somebody already named them.. couldn't read the whole thread. Shania on the brain and all that):

The Residents: because of the secrecy as to who is/was in the band.

Man or Astroman: because not only did they perform in costume and under stage names to mask their identities, they had one tour where instead of actually going on tour they got their friends to dress up like them and play their songs. Like coverfight in real life!

They re-release the same album every year or two, but with a different title, and with different names for all the songs, but you can still tell its really the same album because it all SOUNDS the same? Is that what you mean? If that's what makes you songfight!. then basically every major label artist is in..

Oh, wait, that's not what you meant at all is it?

It could be argued that the hip-hop world elevates the concept to an art form that even Songfight can't touch.

One of my friends was the lead guitarist/singer for a band called The Specifics, and they had a phone number with an answering machine attached to it that you could call to suggest a song title. This same friend, every time the olympics come around, holds his own olympian challenge of writing a song a day for the entirety of the event.

And Cake, because their songs don't make a damn lick of sense, and they really like to just screw around.

Danny Elfman (Oingo Boingo)
After success with his band as a writer/vocalist/keyboard player (most of us come from bands or we're in bands), he went completely into his studio to score movies and tv (writing based on a given theme or title), only making a public appearance once a year for a Halloween gig (song fight live).

Prince. Becuase he, like most SongFight!ers, is one sexy mo fo! Oh and he makes a buttload of music that's pretty good.
