beat help for a non-drummer

Post by jeff robertson »

What would the drum beat of this song look like written on paper?

I want to program a beat sort-of but not exactly like that, but I can't figure it out in terms of eight notes, sixteenth notes, triplets, etc.

I make it to be a 2-bar pattern at 241 BPM, and there's only a snare and bass drum.

Code: Select all

 |1 . 2 . 3 . 4 . 1 . 2 . 3 . 4 . |
S| X X X X |
B|X X X X X X X X |

That seems pretty close.. the parts where the bass hits on the "and" was what was throwing me. Expect to hear something like that on my entry for "get a life" if I can get around to recording it.

I've recently come to the realization that I've been ignoring the fact all my life that decent drum beats are more than just bass-snare-bass-snare with no syncopation.

Every song where I *like* the drums, is either some kind of variant of the above, or some distant relative of the Bo Diddley, or triplet-based in some way. Four on the floor is for disco. I wanna rock.

Mindbomb! When I punch that bass line into Hammerhead *without* the snare... it sounds vaguely "Latin". There must be a degree of Latin influence on rock/pop drumming that I've never known about before.
