The Great Big Songfight! IRC Channel Drive

Post by Märk »

I've been here a while (since sometime in 2003, can remember exactly when, but a few years now) and, other than the actual making/listening to music part, the most fun has been on the boards and on IRC.

A few months ago, I noticed a sad trend. Every time I'd go on the IRC channel, there'd be less people there, and usually, those that were there were just idling (for the uninitiated, this means being logged onto the channel, but away from the computer or ignoring and not participating in chat)

I know blue tried pretty extensively to get people to go there for the longest time, but no one has really (afaik) given a step by step on how to get into the irc thing. So, I'll do that now.

-First, you need a client. My favorite, and the one that for me is the easiest to configure, etc, is Xchat. There is a commercial version, and Xchat2, which is freeware. You can get the free one here.

-After you install it and run it for the first time, it will pop up a connection dialogue. 'ChatJunkies' will already be highlighted, click on the 'Edit' button, check 'Auto connect to the channel at startup', and in the 'Channels to join' input box, enter #songfight! (remember the exclamation mark)

That's it. That was simple, wasn't it? C'mon, give it a try.

from songfight.net:

Use your IRC program to connect to irc.chatjunkies.org then join channel #songfight! Be sure to include the exclamation point in the channel name.

You can also connect to IRC via your Web browser on the ChatJunkies Web site. Tell 'em sf.net sent you. -may be outdated. Link was broken and clicking around on chat junkies it appears that related links on thier site are also broken.

I'm using trillian... which is good for me because its open all of the time already and I don't have to have another seperate process running. The drawbacks are some of the perks of alerts and things of that nature.

Let the idle begin.
